கனேடியத் தலைநகர் ஒட்டாவாவில் நடைபெற்ற 25ஆம் ஆண்டு கறுப்பு ஜூலை நினைவு நாள்

1983ம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை மாதம், சிங்கள வன்முறையிலும், இனத்துவேசத்திலும் தங்கள் உயிர்களைத் தொலைத்த இலங்கைத் தமிழ் மக்களை நினைவு கூரும் 'கறுப்பு ஜூலை நினைவு நாள்", ஜூலை மாதம் 23ம் திகதி புதன்கிழமை, நேற்று, Ben Francklin Place, Nepean City Hall, ஒட்டாவாவில் இடம்பெற்றது.

350 பேர் அளவு கலந்துகொண்ட இந்நிகழ்வு அக வணக்கத்துடன் ஆரம்பமானது. கனேடிய ஊடகவியலாளர்களும் நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்டனர்.

கனேடியத் தேசிய கீதமும் தமிழ்த் தாய் வாழ்த்தும் ஒட்டாவா தமிழ் சிறார்களினால் இசைக்கப்பட்டன. கறுப்பு ஜூலையின் கொடூரத்திலிருந்து தப்பியவர்களுக்கு வாழ வழி செய்த மக்களுக்கும், தஞ்சமளித்து வரவேற்ற நாடுகளுக்கும் நிகழ்வில் நன்றி செலுத்தப்பட்டது.

1983 முதல் இன்றுவரை ஏறக்குறைய 2,50,000 இலங்கைத் தமிழர்களுக்குத் தன்னுள் இடம்கொடுத்த கனடாவுக்கு நிகழ்வில் உரையாற்றிய அத்தனை பேரும் நன்றி செலுத்தினர். வெவ்வேறு சமயப் பிரிவுகளைச் சேர்ந்த பிரதிநிதிகளால் வன்முறையில் பலியானவர்களுக்கான பிரார்த்தனையும் செலுத்தப்பட்டது.

அத்துடன், கறுப்பு ஜூலை நாளையொட்டிய பதிவேடுகள் அடங்கிய விவரணச் சித்திரமும் திரையிடப்பட்டது. கறுப்பு ஜூலையில் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு, இன்று கனேடிய தேசத்தில் வாழும் நம் சமூகப் பிரதிநிதிகளால், அவர்களின் கருமை படர்ந்த அனுபவங்கள் மண்டபத்தில் இருந்தோருடன் பகிரப்பட்டன.

நிகழ்வின் முக்கிய பேச்சாளர், ரொரன்ரோ பல்கலைக் கழகப் பேராசிரியர் ஜோசப் சந்திரகாந்த் அவர்கள், 'மரணம்... தமிழர்களுக்கு விதிக்கப்பட்ட கசப்பான ஒரு கொடை" எனவும் 'அனைவரையும் இணைத்திருப்பது நினைவுகள்... நினைவுகள் பழி வாங்குவதற்காகப் பதிக்கப்பட்டவையல்ல... நினைவுகள் நம்மை ஓர் நாள் தேற்றக்கூடும்... நம்பிக்கையற்ற நினைவுகள் நம்மை அவநம்பிக்கை கொள்ளச் செய்யும்" எனவும் கூறி நிகழ்வை நிறைவு செய்தார்.

இனம், மதம், மொழி வேறுபாடற்று, சுதந்திரத்துக்காகவும் உரிமைகளுக்காகவும் அனைவரும் குரல் கொடுக்க வேண்டும் எனவும், நம்மைப்போல அல்லலுறும் மக்களுக்கு நாம் கரம்கொடுக்கவேண்டும் எனவும் அவர் மேலும் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்.

கறுப்பு ஜூலை நினைவுநாள் நிகழ்வில் கனேடிய இரத்த தானப் பிரிவினரின் information booth அமைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்ட அநேகர் இரத்த தானம் செய்வதற்காக தம் பெயர்களைப் பதிவு செய்தனர். புகலிடம் தந்து பாதுபாப்புத் தரும் கனடாவுக்கு நன்றி செலுத்தும் வகையில் இந்த இரத்ததான சேவைப் பிரிவு அமைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

ஒட்டாவா தமிழ் அமைப்புக்களால் ஒழுங்கு செய்யப்பட்ட இந் நிகழ்வு மாலை 6 மணியளவில் ஆரம்பமாகி இரவு 8 மணியளவில் நிறைவுபெற்றது.

The 25th Commemoration of Black July Pogrom in Canada's Capital

The 25th commemoration of Black July, to remember the more than 3000 innocent Tamil victims who lost their lives in the pogrom that took place in Sri Lanka during the month of July in 1983, was held on the 23rd of July at the Nepean City Hall, Ben Franklin Place. Approximately 350 people filled the auditorium. The event was marked by a minute of silence for the victims who lost their lives in the pogrom and was followed by the Canadian national anthem sung by children. Thanks were given to the people and the countries that helped the victims of Black July and those displaced by the pogrom. Canada was thanked by many speakers for opening its doors to over 250,000 Tamils fleeing Sri Lanka after July 1983. Prayers were held by multi-faith religious leaders for those who lost their lives during the pogrom.

An audio visual presentation on the Black July pogrom was made, in which the recorded footage of the actual events and testimonials from some of the victims were presented. Victim Testimonials were also presented by prominent community members on their personal harrowing experiences during those fateful days in July. The keynote speaker, Professor Joseph Chandrakanthan of University of Toronto, summed it up by saying that death is a sacred experience for Tamils as in many cultures, and many of the victims were not afforded the dignity of their last rites . Highlighting the importance of a memorial, he said, "what unites us is memory...memory is not for revenge...memory can heal us...memory without hope will lead us to despair". He further added that it was humanity that was killed. Regardless of ethnic origin, all should stand up for freedom and stand in solidarity with people experiencing similar atrocities.

The Canadian Blood Services had set up an information booth at the event. Members of the Tamil community overwhelmingly signed up for blood donation under the “partner for life” national campaign in gratitude for the kindness offered by Canada in providing permanent residence for Tamils.

The event was organized by the Ottawa Tamil community associations. The local media were also present at the event.
