Exclusive interview with Tamil Tiger spokesman

Mon, Feb 02 2009

Tamil Tiger separatists in north-eastern Sri Lanka say more than 350,000 Tamil civilians are sheltering with them as government forces pursue a military offensive.

They say 20 to 30 civilians a day are being killed as the government attempts to end their decades-old separatist campaign.

A spokesman for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Thileepan, dismisses claims by the government and human rights groups that the civilians are being used as human shields.

Mr Thileepan says the civilians are living in very poor conditions in makeshift camps - but they don't want to cross into areas recently taken over by the government.

He spoke to Brami Jegan, in one of the only interviews with a foreign news organisation since the Tamil Tigers were driven into a jungle area near Mullaitivu.
