Wed Apr. 29 2009 10:57:06 AM: Tamil demonstration continues on University Ave.

Featured Replies

A demonstration by Tamil protesters continues in front of the United States Consulate on University Avenue.

Between 400 and 500 protesters were in front of the consulate Wednesday morning as part of the ongoing demonstration which started Sunday evening and has snarled traffic in the area since then.

The two groups were involved in a minor scuffle Tuesday morning as police decreased the size of the protest area.

Officers were seen using force to move protesters, and shouting matches ensued as they moved the blockades from Dundas Street toward the consulate on Tuesday.

Some people were seen with ripped clothing following the scuffle, which occurred in the morning.

Some protesters have been camping out at the protest site since the demonstration started.

The demonstrators can be heard chanting and beating drums, but for the most part things have been peaceful.

The protesters want the U.S., Canada and the United Nations to stop military action by the Sri Lankan government against the Tamil people.
