4 Day Tamil Protrest ends -Police move Tamil protest off University Ave., all lanes now open - CP24

Featured Replies

Police have moved Tamil protesters off University Avenue after demonstrators took to the major thoroughfare for the fourth straight day early Thursday morning.

With only about 100 protesters on site, police moved in to shrink the size of the demonstration around 8:30 a.m. All lanes of University Avenue are now open.

Police Chief Bill Blair told reporters Thursday that the demonstrators were moving too close to Dundas St. He says police moved in to keep Dundas St. open to TTC traffic.

The police activity appeared to be peaceful, compared to what happened a day earlier when nearly 1,000 people were protesting in front of the U.S. Consulate.

Police arrested and charged 15 protesters on Wednesday when a containment zone south of Dundas Street was compromised, blocking traffic on the street.

Hundreds of police officers were on the ground and several were on horses.

Police say they have to ensure public safety is protected and will continue to work with those who wish to express their views in a peaceful and safe manner.

University Avenue between Dundas Street West and Queen Street West is now closed. The protest, which has been peaceful for the most part, started Sunday night.

The two groups were involved in a minor scuffle on Tuesday morning as police decreased the size of the protest area.

The Tamil supporters quieted down late Wednesday as police enforced noise bylaws, limiting the demonstrators' use of loud PA systems and drums.

Protesters want the U.S., Canada and the United Nations to stop military action by the Sri Lankan government against the Tamil people.
