Strong earthquake hits off Sumatra

SUMATRA, Indonesia (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off southern Sumatra on Monday morning, officials said.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1, according to the Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi Dan Geofisika, which is a local agency in Indonesia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center put the magnitude at 6.2.

The quake struck about 40 miles deep at 6.10 a.m. local time (7.10 p.m. EDT Sunday), 87 miles from Bengkulu in Sumatra, Indonesia. No tsunami warnings were issued.

Strong earthquakes often hit Indonesia as it is in the so-called "Ring of Fire."

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake.

Quakes strike Vanuatu, Sumatra but no immediate damage

TWO strong earthquakes hit almost simultaneously at both ends of Australia's region this morning, in Vanuatu and Indonesia.

But it is more likely co-incidence than a geological factor which caused two quakes in such quick succession, according to Geoscience Australia.

An earthquake measuring about 6.2 on the richter scale hit Vanuatu just after 9 a.m. (Melbourne time), frightening tourists, while another measuring 6.2 struck Indonesia's largest island of Sumatra about 10 minutes later.

The Vanuatu earthquake did not cause any serious damage, nor did the Sumatra quake, Geoscience Australia said.

Both Indonesia's Sumatra and Vanuatu sit on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," where a meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

Witnesses in Port Vila said buildings shook heavily for 10 seconds, throwing items off shelves, when the quake struck just after 9 a.m.

They said the ground shook heavily for about 10 seconds just after 10 a.m. (9 a.m. AEST) , hurling items off shelves and raising fears buildings would collapse.

"It started slowly but became more and more intense as it went along,'' said New Zealand tourist Caroline Marsh, who was having breakfast in her Port Vila hotel when the quake struck.

"It was a low rumbling, almost a growling, that seemed to shake the building from its foundations. It was really quite scary because for a while we worried that it would keep on gathering strength and bring the building down.''

Geoscience Australia seismologist Clive Collins said despite the similarity between the quakes, it seemed each was too small to be related.

"Some times you get larger quakes on the plate boundaries, which may be linked," he said.

"There was some movement under Vanuatu but it wouldn't translate ovre the distance to Sumatra."

Vanuatu, which has a population of 215,000, was hit by two powerful earthquakes last month, including one measuring 6.5 on June 2.

The US Geological Survey said the undersea quake hit 29km west of Port Vila, the capital, at a depth of 51km.

The epicentre of the Indonesian quake, which struck at 6:10am (09.10 a.m. Melbourne), was located 135km southeast of the town of Bengkulu, on the western coast of Sumatra.

It was measured at a depth of 66.5 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre based in Hawaii did not issue a tsunami alert for the region.

It follows a quake off the south coast of New Zealand the week before last, which prompted a tsunami report for souther-east Australia which was later cancelled.
