Gay student in alleged webcam bullying commits suicide

NEW YORK — Two undergraduates at a US university have been arrested after a fellow student they allegedly filmed and broadcast over the Internet during a gay encounter killed himself by jumping into the Hudson River.

The tragedy appeared to be the latest in a growing trend of sophisticated technology and social networking sites being used to give old-fashioned bullying a vicious new twist.

Rutgers University in New Jersey said the dead man, first year student Tyler Clementi, 18, appeared to have been the victim of actions that "gravely violate the university's standards of decency and humanity."

Two Rutgers students "have been arrested and charged with invasion of privacy for their actions," the university's president, Richard McCormick, said in a statement.

According to US news reports, Clementi, a talented violinist, was secretly filmed by his roommate, Dharun Ravi, while kissing another man. The film was allegedly broadcast live from a webcam, then shared on the iChat network.

Ravi also allegedly used Twitter to advertise the sordid spying.

"Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly's room and turned on my Web cam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay," Ravi tweeted, according to the New York Post.

Fellow first-year student Molly Wei was the other student arrested in the incident.

Three days later, on September 22, Clementi posted on his Facebook page: "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry."

That same evening he jumped off the soaring George Washington Bridge, which connects New York City to New Jersey, and into the Hudson.

Cyberbullying is a growing phenomenon in an era when even very young students ages carry cellphone cameras and regularly use social networking systems.

"Kids have been bullying each other for generations. The latest generation, however, has been able to utilize technology to expand their reach and the extent of their harm," a research paper on www.cyberbullying.us says.

"Adolescents use technology, usually computers or cell phones, to harass, threaten, humiliate, or otherwise hassle.... More recently, some have recorded unauthorized videos of other kids and uploaded them for the world to see, rate, tag, and discuss."

According to cyberbullying.us, estimates of youths who have endured cyberbullying vary from 10 to 40 percent and is likely to be about 20 percent of 11- to 18-year-olds.

The ubiquity of social networking works the other way too, with Facebook, YouTube and other popular platforms becoming tools for those opposing the bullies.

A Facebook page set up as a memorial to Clementi quickly attracted thousands of followers, while hundreds visited another page urging Rutgers students to wear black on Friday in his memory.

"We must fight this once and for all ....Hate Crimes, bullying, stalking, invasion of privacy and the pain of having your personal life shattered because of your sexual orientation," the Tyler Clementi Memorial Facebook page said.

Columnist Louis Hochman, with the Ridgewood Patch newspaper, which covers Clementi's former hometown, said the tragedy "couldn't have unfolded without some of today's most popular tools."

However, "the tools they used may have been particular to our time, but the sentiment driving them wasn't. There's nothing new about meanness, nor irresponsibility."

The two suspects have not spoken in public since the tragedy.

A friend of Ravi told ABC television that the incident amounted to a prank gone wrong, rather than an anti-gay persecution.

"He's very, very open-minded," the friend, Michael Zhuang, said on ABC. "If it had been a girl in the room it wouldn't have been any different."

இவர் தனது சொந்த ஊருக்கு சென்று திடீரென தூக்குப்போட்டு தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டார். அவருடன் படித்த சக மாணவர்கள் “ராக்கிங்” செய்து வந்தனர். இதனால் மனவேதனை அடைந்து ஜோதி தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டார்.

தற்கொலை செய்வதற்கு முன்பு அவர் தனது அண்ணன் தீபக்கிடம் மாணவர்கள் கேலி கிண்டல் செய்து மிரட்டுகிறார்கள் இனி நான் சென்னைக்கு படிக்க செல்லமாட்டேன் என்று கூறி கதறி அழுதுள்ளார்.

இது தொடர்பாக ஆயில்பட்டி போலீசார் வழக்கு பதிவு செய்து விசாரணை நடத்தி வருகிறார்கள்.

சென்னை அண்ணா பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் ஜோதியிடம் ராக்கிங்கில் ஈடுபட்ட மாணவர்களிடம் விசாரணை நடத்த போலீசார் முடிவு செய்துள்ளனர். இதற்காக தனிப்படை போலீசார் நாளை சென்னை வருகிறார்கள். முதலில் ஜோதியின் நெருங்கிய தோழிகளிடம் விசாரணை நடத்தும் போலீசார், ராக்கிங்கில் ஈடுபட்ட மாணவர்கள் யார்- யார் என்பது பற்றிய விவரங்களை சேகரிக்கிறார்கள்.

கல்லூரிகளில் ராக்கிங்கில் ஈடுபட்டால் கடும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும் என்றுஅண்ணா பல்கலை கழகம் பலமுறை எச்சரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளது. ஆனால் பல்கலைக்கழக வளாகத்திலேயே மாணவர்கள் ராக்கிங்கில் ஈடுபட்ட சம்பவம் கடும் அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

எனவே கல்வி நிறுவனங்களில் ராக்கிங்கை தடுக்க கடுமையான நடவடிக்கைகளை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே பெற்றோர்களின் எதிர்பார்ப்பாக உள்ளது.

மாணவி ஜோதி நன்றாக படிப்பார். 10-ம் வகுப்பு தேர்வில் 475 மதிப்பெண்கள் பெற்று மாவட்ட அளவில் 2-ம் இடம் பிடித்து சாதனை படைத்தார்.

நாமக்கல்லில் உள்ள ஒரு தனியார் பள்ளி இலவச கல்வி அளிக்க முன்வந்தது. இதையடுத்து அந்த பள்ளியில் சேர்ந்து பிளஸ்-2 படித்தார். பிளஸ்-2 தேர்வில் 1200-க்கு 1105 மதிப்பெண்கள் பெற்றார்.

இதன்மூலம் அவருக்கு கடந்த மாதம் அண்ணா பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் என்ஜினீயரிங் படிக்க இடம் கிடைத்தது. இதனால் குடும்பத்தை பிரிந்து அவர் சென்னை வந்து விடுதியில் தங்கி படித்து வந்தார்.

படிப்பில் சாதனை படைத்து வந்த ஜோதி திடீரென தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்ட சம்பவம் அப்பகுதியில் பெரும் சோகத்தை ஏற்படுத்தி உள்ளது.

இந்த விசயத்தில் அந்த மாணவியின் பெற்றோர் மனம் எப்படி கஷ்டப்படும் என்பதை நினைது பாருங்கள் என்னை பொறுத்தவரை ஒரு நல்ல குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்த எந்த மாணவனும் இது போன்ற கீழ்த்தரமான இது போன்ற ரேகிங் கொடுமையில் ஈடுபடமாட்டான்.

இந்த மாணவியின் மரணம் ரேக்கிங் கொடுமைக்கு கடைசி உயிராக இருக்க வேண்டும் இனிமேல் இது போன்ற கொடுமை நடக்காமல் இருக்க நமக்கு தெரிந்த மாணவ மாணவிகளுக்கு அறிவுரை வழங்க வேண்டும்.

இது மாதிரியான சம்பவத்தால் ஆங்கில கல்வி முக்கியமா இல்லையா? என்ற கேள்வி எழுகிறது.
