Appeal for Clemency for Death-Row Inmates

August 29, 2011

We are writing to you to urge you to intervene and advocate for clemency for the three death-row inmates accused of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. His death was regrettable; please do not shed further blood because of this tragic event.

Mr. Perarivalan, Mr. Murugan and Mr. Santhan are scheduled to be hanged on September 9th. Unfortunately, their appeal for clemency has been denied. The death penalty in India has not been used in 7 years. Resurrecting the use of capital punishment would tarnish Indias progress towards just and humane treatment of human beings.

Your most recent call for an international investigation into war crimes in Sri Lanka was a courageous and revolutionary step towards achieving justice for Tamils around the world. With this step, your commitment to Tamils all across the globe is a shining example of what democratic nations can achieve. You have provided a safe haven for Sri Lankas refugees and have offered them a way to protect their families and escape horrific violence.

We welcome Indias commitment to humanity and to universal principles of human rights. State-sponsored murder sharply contradicts with Indias values of justice. We strongly urge you to advocate for clemency for those accused of the former Prime Ministers assassination. The great Mohandas Gandhi, who travelled through the villages of India, said, An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind. Please follow Gandhis principles and stop further bloodshed.http://www.pearlaction.org/
