Tamil gangs tackled from 'within' By Debabani Majumdar BBC News, London Samurai swords are often the weapon of choice for gang members For a 26-year-old, Abhya's face seems to have too many scars. "That was someone trying to take my eye out with a broken beer bottle," he said pointing to the circular scar almost encircling his right eye. "And this here was a cut from a samurai sword," he added, showing a cut which extends from his hairline to his right eyebrow. The scar sent shivers down my spine, but Abhya, who did not want to be identified, describes a confrontation with a rival group at a wedding in 2005 in Ilford, east London,…

By M.R. Narayan Swamy, IANS, [RxPG] New Delhi, Feb 25 - Describing the situation in Sri Lanka as 'serious', the US envoy to the island nation has warned against attempts to underestimate the Tamil Tigers and asserted that they cannot be defeated militarily. Ambassador Robert Blake also said in a telephonic interview from Colombo that his country 'respectfully disagreed' with those in Sri Lanka who feel a military solution was possible to end the dragging Tamil separatist campaign. The ambassador, who took charge in September 2006, made it clear that only devolution of powers that satisfy the 'legitimate aspirations' of the Tamil minority could be the basi…

Diego Garcia's Hidden Role in Sri Lankan Politics By S.N. Amazing how the three vital factors regarding real estate came into play even in the plight of the Tamils -- location, location, and location. Diego Garcia? Is he of any relation to the tall, dark and handsome Cuban, Andy Garcia? The very gentleman who set many female hearts afire when he played the most coveted roles in decades, the hot-headed son of Sonny Corleone and mob protégé of Michael Corloene, Vincent Mancini; in 1990 Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather: Part III -- Unfortunately, not!
