Dear friend,

How much is Sri Lankan tea worth?

Well it depends who you are. At auction Ceylon tea goes for about $2 a kilo, and in the supermarket it goes for far more - but if you are a tea worker then you will only see a few cents of that. You will have to pick over eighteen kilogrammes of tea leaves to earn that $2 - and that's normally a day's wages.

Next time you finish a cup of tea, look at the dregs at the bottom of the mug. That's about the portion of the cup you have drunk which will directly profit the tea picker.

And Sri Lankan tea workers don't just have to contend with dire poverty. 90% are "Indian" "Hill" or "Plantation" Tamils. Sri Lanka's fourth ethnic minority (certainly by visibility if not by population) they are among the most victimised and oppressed people on an island which knows a thing or two about oppressed minorities. And yet their plight has remained largely unknown, until now.

Click here to do something about it.

A coalition of organisations have come together to campaign for the rights of tea workers. They include Minority Rights Group international, National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights, Society for Threatened Peoples, Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace and Justice, International Dalit Solidarity Network, Medico International and Suaram. Most of these organisations have deep roots in Sri Lanka, or with low caste workers in South Asia. They have put together acampaign video and a report detailing the situation.

With your help we can use those things to make a difference to tea workers' lives. We now have the research, but we need to show the tea companies that tea drinkers care where their tea comes from.

Please sign this pledge, to tell the tea companies that you care.

We will add your signature, along with the hundreds of others we receive, to a letter to the government of Sri Lanka and the corporate sector that manage the tea estates in Sri Lanka asking them improve conditions for tea pickers. When they know that thousands of tea drinkers are standing behind us they will be forced to listen.

Most tea pickers are low caste and most tea pickers are women. Caste and gender prejudice means even their own trade union leaders will not stand up for them. But we will. And with your help we can improve their lives.

Kind regards,

The Sri Lanka Campaign

P.S please do spread the word - about the website, and the video.
