சிரியாவிலும் போராட்டம் வெடித்தது!

கடந்த மாதம் பெப்ரவரி துனிசியாவிலும் அதைத் தொடர்ந்து எகிப்திலும் ஆட்சியாளர்களுக்கு எதிராக கலவரம் மூண்டது. அவை முடிவுக்கு வந்த நிலையில் லிபியாவில் அதிபர் கடாபிக்கு எதிராக கலவரம் ஏற்பட்டது.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து அதன் பக்கத்து நாடான சிரியாவிலும் போராட்டம் வெடித்துள்ளது. அங்கு பாத் கட்சியைச் சேர்ந்த பஷார் அல்-ஆசாத் கடந்த 50 ஆண்டுகளாக அதிபராக பதவி வகித்து வருகிறார்.

மேலும் அங்கு 48 ஆண்டுகளாக அவரச சட்டம் அமலில் இருந்து வருகிறது. அதனால் அதிபர் ஆசாத்துக்கு எதிர்ப்பு கிளம்பியுள்ளது. இதைத் தொடர்ந்து அவர் பதவி விலக வலியுறுத்தி பொதுமக்கள் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர்.

இந்த போராட்டம் கலவர மாக மாறியுள்ளது. அங்குள்ள தேரா நகர வீதிகளில் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்ட மக்கள் மீது போலீசார் தாக்குதல் நடத்தினர். பதிலுக்கு அவர்களை மக்கள் தாக்கினர். அச்சம்பவத்தில் 4 பேர் உயிரிழந்தனர். இதையடுத்து கலவரம் வலுவடைந்தது.

நேற்று 3 வது நாளாக போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர். இதனால் தேரா நகருக்கு வரும் ரோடுகள் மூடப்பட்டன. பாதுகாப்பு பணியில் போலீசாருடன் ராணுவமும் ஈடுபடுத்தப்பட்டது. இதைத் தொடர்ந்து தேரா நகரின் மீது ராணுவ ஹெலிகாப்டர்கள் பறந்தபடி போராட்டக்காரர்களின் நடவடிக்கையை கண்காணித்தது.

இதற்கிடையே போராட்டக்காரர்கள் மீது பொலிசார் தடியடி நடத்தி கண்ணீர் புகைக் குண்டுகளை வீசினர். அதில் ஒருவர் பலியானார். பலர் காயம் அடைந்தனர். அதனால் ஆத்திரம் அடைந்த அவர்கள் பாத் கட்சி அலுவலகத்துக்கு தீ வைத்தனர்.

மேலும் அதிபர் ஆசாத்தின் உறவினர்களுக்கு சொந்தமான 2 டெலிபோன் நிறுவனங்களுக்கும் தீ வைத்தனர். போராட்டம் வலுவடைந்துள்ள நிலையில் தேரா நகரில் இயங்கும் இணையம் உள்ளிட்ட தகவல் தொடர்பு நிலையங்களின் செயல்பாடுகள் முடக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

மின்சாரம் நிறுத்தப்பட்டது. மக்களின் அன்றாட வாழ்க்கை பாதிக்கப்பட்டது. அவர்கள் வீடுகளுக்குள் முடங்கி கிடக்கின்றனர். இதற்கிடையே போராட்டத்தை கட்டுக்குள் கொண்டுவர சிரியா அரசு முயற்சி மேற்கொண்டு வருகிறது.

Six Dead in Clashes in Southern Syrian City .

DARAA, Syria—Violent clashes in a restive southern Syrian city killed as many as six people early Wednesday, making it the deadliest single day since antigovernment protests inspired by uprisings across the Arab world reached this country last week, an activist said.

The activist told The Associated Press that six people died in Daraa when security forces launched an attack near the al-Omari Mosque, where antigovernment demonstrators have taken shelter. He said a paramedic was among the dead. The activist spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing reprisals.

The weeklong standoff and violence in Daraa is remarkable in a country like Syria, where security is tightly controlled. So far, the protests have been confined to Daraa and a few surrounding areas.

Groups on social-networking sites have called for massive demonstrations across the country Friday, dubbed "Dignity Friday."

Syria's state-run TV reported that four people died when "an armed gang" attacked an ambulance in Daraa. The dead included a doctor, a paramedic, a driver and a policeman, the TV station said.

It showed footage of guns, AK-47s, hand grenades and other ammunition as well as stashes of Syrian money which it said was seized from inside al-Omari mosque.

The conflicting information and the discrepancy in the toll of the dead couldn't be immediately reconciled.

The latest attack is likely to raise tension in Daraa as security forces are now expected to intensify their crackdown on antigovernment activists.

The Syrian government has sought to contain the protests by firing the governor of the southern province of Daraa, where security forces killed seven protesters over the weekend. But the dismissal failed to quell popular anger and the protests reached the province's village of Nawa, where hundreds of people marched demanding reforms on Tuesday, the activist said.

State TV said security forces were able "to kill and wound" some of the attackers in Wednesday's violence and are chasing those who were able to flee. The report didn't provide more details, and denied that security forces had stormed the mosque.

Last week's unrest started with the arrest by security forces of a group of students who had sprayed antigovernment graffiti on walls in Daraa city, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of the capital Damascus.

Security troops trying to break up demonstrations calling for the students' release and for political freedoms killed seven people over several days.

So far, none of the slogans used by protesters have called for the ouster of President Bashar Assad, who took power in 2000 after the death of his father and predecessor, Hafez. Despite political repression and rights abuses, Mr. Assad remains relatively popular among some in the Arab world, in particular because he is seen as one of the few Arab leaders willing to stand up to Israel.

The demonstrators have been calling for reforms and political freedoms, and demanded the removal of the provincial governor, Faisal Kalthoum. Mr. Kalthoum was fired Tuesday, but that failed to quell the protests.

On Wednesday, Abdul-Karim al-Rihawi, head of the Arab League for Human Rights, said several prominent activists have been arrested in the past two days, including well-known writer Loay Hussein. Mr. Hussein had issued a statement calling for freedom of peaceful protests and expressed solidarity with the Daraa protesters.

Mr. Rihawi said security agents picked up Mr. Hussein from his home in Damascus on Tuesday and confiscated his computer.

He said another activist, Issa al-Masalmi, was arrested in Daraa.

Meanwhile, authorities said that six women who were detained last week after protesting in front of the Syrian Interior Ministry in central Damascus would be released Wednesday. The women were among 32 people, most of them relatives of political detainees in Syria, who were detained last Wednesday and charged by a prosecutor with hurting the state's image.

Mr. Rihawi said the women would still have to stand trial despite their release
