12 workers shot dead in Lanka

NDTV Correspondent

Tuesday, May 30, 2006 (Colombo):

Tamil Tiger rebels of Sri Lanka have shot dead 12 Singhalese constructions workers in the east of country.

The rebels also took with them 14 others but two of them escaped, a military spokesman said.

But the rebels have denied involvement.

The incident comes on a day the European Union listed the rebels, also known as Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam as a terrorist group.

Freeze on funds

The ban will deprive the LTTE of vital funds they collect from members of the Tamil community in Europe and free other financing channels.

The EU move follows a request from the United States and Sri Lanka governments.

The LTTE has warned the ban might just force them back to war.

In Tokyo four main aid donors to Sri Lanka also kicked off talks to try to prevent a return to civil war.

Special peace envoys from Japan, Norway, the European Union and the United States gathered in Tokyo a month after meeting in Oslo, then donors pledged $4.5 billion.
