Students’ protests gain momentum across Tamil Nadu

Student protests demanding justice for war crimes in Sri Lanka gathered momentum across Tamil Nadu on Monday, with class boycotts, fasts and demonstrations being reported from various cities and towns.

The protests intensified after eight students of Loyola College here, who were on an indefinite fast since Friday, were taken into police custody in the early hours.

Students in about 25 colleges in the State abstained from classes, accusing Sri Lanka of targeting innocent Tamils during the war against the LTTE. There were reports of relay fasts in at least 14 places.

Demonstrations or processions were held to demand that India vote against Sri Lanka in the ongoing UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva. Some students belonging to government arts and law colleges burnt effigies of Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The demands put forward by the Tamilnadu students

1. We strongly condemn the US-draft resolution. Do not pass it at UNHRC
2. What took place in Ilangkai [sri Lanka] is not merely war crimes or violations of human rights, but planned genocide
3. International investigation and referendum are the only solutions for the Tamils. Government of India should propose a resolution to bring in international investigation and to conduct a referendum on independent Tamil Eelam.
4. A proposal should be made to remove the Deputy High Commission of the Sinhala chauvinistic State from the Tamil soil [Tamil Nadu]. India should severe all diplomatic relations with Ilangkai [sri Lanka].
5. Government of India, accepting the request of the Tamil Nadu State Government, should implement economic sanctions on Ilangkai [sri Lanka].
6. On behalf of the Tamil Nadu State Government, a foreign relations department should be created to assure the security of global Tamils.
7. No Asian country should be a member in the [international] investigation committee.
8. Killing Tamil Nadu fishermen should be stopped immediately.
9. If the Government of India is not finding solution to the question of Eezham Tamils, we will not pay any taxes from Tamil Nadu. We, students, will actively engage in this campaign.

Angry young men want India to rein in Sri Lanka

Angered by the gory visuals of the execution of Balachandran, the 12-year-old son of LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran, by the Sri Lankan army during the final phase of the war, the student community in Tamil Nadu has stepped out to the streets to agitate for justice. The students’ agitation is fast spreading across Tamil Nadu, faster than expected.

The last time such campus upsurge was witnessed was during the mid-60s when students agitated against the imposition of Hindi. That agitation had even triggered the fall of the Congress in the state and the emergence of the DMK as the ruling party, thanks to its student leaders leading the anti-Hindi stir in the state. Many of those students later became the leaders, and ministers, in the Dravidian rule that began in 1967. The Congress, seen as a ‘traitor’ by the Tamil youth in those days because its government ruled at the Centre and was imposing Hindi upon them, has not been able to return to power since then.

The students now are once again very angry with the Congress. Speeches at the protest rallies and fasting-venues sound so mature in political content, not merely rhetoric, as one student leader after another across the state targets the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre for being soft on Colombo.

The Congress is worried as the Lok Sabha election is fast approaching. Former state Congress president K V Thangabalu was driven away when he tried to make a speech at the protest-fast of Loyola College students here a few days ago.

“Two things appear as the most offensive. The Indian government not only watched while the Tamils were massacred in Sri Lanka, but also helped the government there to carry out the genocide. And now, India is once again failing the Tamils at the UNHRC”, said K. Saravanan, a computer science student at Tirunelveli.

“My friends and I have not been able to concentrate on the classes at college or sleep at night ever since we saw those pictures of Balachandran’s execution and now evidence of other kids too killed by the Sri Lankan forces”.

“The Channel 4 visuals have stirred our conscience. Those people, children, were killed in captivity. They were our people. They were innocent”, said K.S. Kanagaraj, state president of the Student Federation of India. He said the student agitations would “certainly pick up even more strength after the semester exams get over in a couple of weeks”.

IIT students to join anti-Lanka stir

A day after the state government order all arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu to shut down, students of IIT-M on Saturday decided to hold a protest against the treatment of Tamils in Sri Lanka, marking a new chapter in the otherwise politics-free tech campuses.

The one-day hunger strike will begin at 8am on Sunday. The students, who claimed to have obtained permission from the administration for the protest, have also arranged a panel discussion involving activists on the issue in the afternoon. The protest will end with a rally.

"We have taken permission from our management for the protest. Many students from other states have no knowledge of the Sri Lankan Tamil issue. It is also an attempt to make them aware of the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka," said S Rathnavel, a chemical engineering student who is one of the organizers.

"We are holding this protest to highlight the humanitarian crisis. Our panel discussion will focus on the political history of Sri Lanka, current ground reality and other related issues. It will also discuss what will be the best solution for Tamils in the Island nation," Rathnavel said. He said the campaign will be taken to other IIT campuses in the country.

IIT director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said, "If the students want to show their solidarity with the cause, they have the freedom to do so." When asked whether the campus will be shut down if the protest escalates, he said he doesn't anticipate any such trouble.

For the first time in the recent years, students of IIT-Madras have worked up courage to hit the streets for a social cause. About 400 techies-in-the making will observe a one-day token hunger strike on their campus on Sunday to express solidarity with war-hit Eelam Tamils, thanks to the massive students’ upsurge sweeping the state.

One Million Indian Students go on Hunger Strike Urging India to Support US Resolution Against Sri Lanka at UN.

http://world.einnews.com/pr_news/141839690/one-million-indian-students-go-on-hunger-strike-urging-india-to-support-us-resolution-against-sri-lanka-at-un

Chennai, India: March 16, 2013:

"The Government has ordered immediate closure of all Universities and Colleges"

From dispatches:

One Million Indian Students will go on hunger strike on March 20th, urging India to support a US Resolution against Sri Lanka at the current UN Human Rights Council Session in Geneva.

Students are also calling for a UN Referendum in Tamil areas of Sri Lanka, so that Tamils can determine their own future. Additionaly, Students are urging to stop genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

A wave of student protests have swept through the State of Tamil Nadu for over a week now, brining tens of thousands of students to the streets urging India to support the US Resolution at the UN.

Several hundred students already started hunger strike around the State, resulting in some taken to hospitals after their condition become worse. More students volunteered to observe fast unto death as soon as the condition of other already observing hunger striker's condition worsened.

Police are struggling to contain mass rallies due to sheer number of the students actively participating in the agitation. Protests were held even in remote parts of the State. Students also blocked trains and roads, prompting the police to arrest hundreds of students.

The Government has ordered immediate closure of all Universities and Colleges to try to contain the spreading agitation.

The emotive Sri Lankan Tamils issue was resurrected recently when British media released photographs that suggest that the 12-year-old-son of Prabhakaran, the chief of the rebel Tamil Tigers (LTTE), was executed in cold blood by Sri Lankan forces in 2009.

* The US is expected to move the motion against Sri Lanka on War Crimes for killing over 70,000 Tamils and raping hundreds of Tamil women by Sri Lankan Security forces in five months during the final months of the war that ended in May 2009.

All political parties in Tamil Nadu have been pressuring the Indian government to vote against Lanka. The Congress-led UPA government had voted against Sri Lanka in another resolution last year.
