If Ranil was in power they will defeat the Tigers with international support – Johnstan Fernando [03rd

Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Johnstan Fernando of the United National Party said if Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe was in power a question on Mawilaru canal would not have arisen.

He said this at a media briefing held at the office of the Opposition Leader this morning (03).

He said the Government should either wage war or bring peace.

Mr Fernando said if they were in power they would either open the canal talking with the Tigers or provide relief for the people while getting international assistance to solve this problem to defeat the Tigers completely within 2-3 years’ time.

He also said that the UNP severely condemns the closure of Mawilaru canal.

MP Laskshman Seneviratne who was present at this occasion said that there are three groups in the country who are favourable of a war. They are the LTTE, JVP and the JHU.

Mr Seneviratne also said that a similar situation would not have arisen if Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe was in power.

Ceasefire Agreement is a claptrap but not a reality’ – Wimal Weerawansa

We request the Government to leave the CFA which is only a claptrap that cannot be put into practice said Parliamentarian Mr Wimal Weerawansa, Propaganda Secretary of the JVP.

He made this comment at a media briefing held at the Public Library Hall this morning (03).

Mr Weerawansa reminded that the Diplomats at Colpetty arrived in haste at Pesalai when the fisherman were attacked and recorded statements from the TNA Parliamentarians.

The same white gentlemen who visited at that moment were silent when the Mawilaru canal was closed depriving the drinking and farming facilities of the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim civilians, who did not bother at least to issue a statement, he said.

It was the intention of the Tigers to pave the way for Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe to set up a Government by closing Mawilaru canal. They had to change their minds because of the different action taken by the Government.

Mr Weerawansa added that thus the war tactics and political tactics of the Tigers did not bear any fruits.

Mr Soleheim's heart is melted when the Tigers are attacked and issues statements against the Government immediately, he said.

Mr Weerawansa asked “who appointed a white puppet to control an independent state?”

“Mr Soleheim is asking both parties to return to the former positions. He has no right to do the duty of a magistrate,” he said.

He urged the Government to demand Soleheim to withdraw his statement. He also said that steps should be taken further to defeat the Tigers.

The President of the National Patriotic Movement, Dr Gunadasa Amarasekera addressing the media said that the Mawilaru issue is a decisive moment in the country’s history. He said that the action taken by the Government could be approved at this moment and said it is a moment for solving the fate of the nation.

He requested to set aside the cost of living and trade union matters and give priority to the national problem.

He said this is a good opportunity to save the Eastern Province from the terrorists.

He accused that the UNP Government paved the way for the Tigers to set up a separate rule by signing the CFA and asked whether the UNP is critizing the Government with their clothes on.
