‘Dr’ R Jeyadevan (leader of the little known Tamil Democratic Congress) and his views on Human Rights Violations by the LTTE

I have just seen extracts, from a letter sent by a man called ‘Dr’ R Jeyadevan to Messers Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnel, both Labour MPs, who are seeking the lifting of the ban on the LTTE in Britain, in a petition they have submitted to the government. This ‘Dr’ Jeyadevan appears to be opposed to such a move. His actions are surprising judging from his background. .

I had not previously heard of Dr Jeyadevan’s little known ‘organisation’ or is it a ‘party’? ‘Dr’ R Jeyadevan claims to be the leader of ‘a London based Tamil Democratic Congress’. I have met this R Jeyadevan in the mid 1990s, but then he was plain ‘Mr’ Jeyadevan and described himself as the convenor for Brent South, of an organisation called the ‘Tamil Welfare Union’. I have spoken at a meeting that he had organised, of members of the Tamil community in London, to support London candidates of the British Labour Party at the 1997 general election. It was one of several such meetings organised by Jeyadevan and others, around London. The meeting was to have been held at Tylers Hall of Kingsbury High School (Lower), off Stag Lane in Kingsbury. The ‘dirty tricks’ brigade of the Sinhala expatriate community in London were however, able to persuade the head of the school, who was probably a strong Conservative, to cancel the booking at the last minute. Fortunately, the organisers and Mr Jeyadevan were able to move the venue to St Mathai Church hall ln Colindale where the meeting was held as planned.

Among the speakers at that meeting were the current Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas; Harrow East MP Tom Mc Nulty; Brent North MP Barry Gardiner, Hendon – Andrew Dismore; Islington – Jeremy Corbyn (who had been invited though he was not one of the local candidates) and Mr Robert Evans MEP. Paul Boateng who was an MP in the 1997 and the 2001 parliaments was also there. Mr Jeyadevan also arranged a similar meeting, for the then current Conservative, Harrow MPs, Robert Hughes for Harrow West and Hugh Dykes for Harrow East, at the Rayners Pub in Rayners Lane, Harrow. One can see that as far back as 1997, Mr Jeyadevan was hedging his bets and playing both sides.

I met Mr Jeyadevan for the first time in the early 1990s when we both attended a meeting in Vauxhall, but had to wait for the organiser to turn up and the doors to be opened. While waiting, I showed Mr Jeyadevan an article I had written for the ‘Hot Spring’ (a journal that has since folded). In the article, I had mentioned a very useful book by Rev Dr B D Kanagaratnam, written when he was a lecturer at the Theological College in Pilamatalawa. This same Rev Kanagaratnam was to be, later, the Anglican Archdeacon of Jaffna. Mr Jeyadvan told me that Rev Kanagaratnam was his uncle. I was therefore surprised to learn many years later, that Mr Jeyadevan is the trustee of a Hindu Temple that he has set up in, I believe Wembley, with a grant that he was able to obtain through the assistance of Mr Barry Gardiner. Yes, Mr Jeyadevan does hedge his bets.

I have no grievance with Mr Jeyadevan. As far as I am concerned, he is welcome to change his politics or his religion as often as his shirts. What does concern me is his objecting to the petition submitted by the two MPs mentioned earlier, that the ban on the LTTE be lifted.

Mr Jeyadevan claims that he was held a prisoner by the LTTE for 62 days. We do not know what he was doing in the Tamil homeland nor why he was ‘held’ there. It is sufficient to note that he is back in London with no sign of being treated ‘in appalling circumstances in unknown, secretive and underground camps by the LTTE’ or ‘undergone torture in his cell’ where ‘Day light (sic) does not penetrate in some of the cells and these are infested with mosquitoes and worms’.

Mr Jeyadevan wants these ‘prison camps’ opened to international inspection. Strange, has no one told Mr Jeyadevan that most countries like America, Britain, Canada, the E.U. to name a few, do not recognise the LTTE? How can any of these countries demand that these ‘prisons’ be opened for inspection if they do not recognise the LTTE?

The solution is clearly in the hands of the British government. If the British government were to recognise the LTTE as an organisation of freedom fighters and not ‘terrorists’, then the chances are that the British government will have the moral right to inspect any ‘prisons’ if they really do exist and not just in Mr Jeyadevan’s fevered imagination.

Mr Jeyadevan cannot have his cake and eat it. He cannot oppose the British government’s recognition of the LTTE as an organisation of freedom fighters and at the same time insist that the Tamil homeland be open to international inspection. Or to use Mr Jeyadevan’s own words ‘be made accountable and pressurised to understand in uncertain terms (I believe he means ‘no uncertain terms’) that their leadership will face justice of the international courts for murders and mayhem they have created/creating for their own people’

I am glad Mr Jeyadevan does realise the existence of terms like ‘murders’ and ‘mayhem’. Where was he when the Muttur massacres took place? Where was he when Taraki; Parajasingham, or Ravirajah were murdered? Did he enjoy his Christmas meal knowing that Tamils in the homeland had only biscuits and plain tea? Thanks to the government’s ban on moving food items to the north. But then, Perhaps Mr Jeyadevan, as the trustee of a Hindu temple, is no longer a Christian and no longer observes Christmas.

மேற்குலகைப் பொறுத்த மட்டில் பன்முறைப்பட்ட துறைகளில் அதி சிறப்பாக செயலாற்றுபவர்களுக்கு "டாக்டர்" வழங்கப்படுவது வழமை. சிலவேளை மிகப் புதிய துறையான "கோயில் உண்டியல் திருடும்" துறையில் அதி சிறப்பாக செயலாற்றியதற்கு ஜெயதேவனுக்கு இந்த டாக்டர் பட்டம் வழங்கப்பட்டிருக்கக் கூடும்.

எது எப்படியோ "டாக்டர்" ஜெயதேவனுக்கு யாழ்கள உறவுகள் சார்பாக வாழ்த்துவோம். பல்லாண்டு, பல நூறு உண்டியல் சுட்டு, பல கோடி சுருட்டி மாற்றுக்கருத்தாளனாக வாழ வாழ்த்துக்கள்!!!!

யோ...... சின்ன உண்டியலில் சுட்டு, இரண்டு பெரிய வீடுகள் உங்களால் வாங்கமுடியுமா? அதை செய்து காட்டியவனுக்கு டாக்டர் பட்டம் குடுக்காட்டி தாங்களாகவே போட்டுக்கொள்ளுறதுதானே. :P :P

இப்பத்தானே காசு கொடுத்தால் சேர் பட்டமே வாங்கலாம். அண்மையில் இது தொடர்பாக ரொனிபிளேயரும், அவரது உதவியாளர்களும் காவல்துறையினரால் விசாரிக்கப்பட்டமை அறிந்திருப்பீர்கள். அது போல உண்டியாலனும் தனது அரசியற்கட்சியின் செல்வாக்கிற்கோ.. அல்லது அவரது துணைவியாரின்; செல்லவார்த்தைக்கோ யாராவது கட்டுப்பட்டுப் பதவியிவழங்கியிருக்கலாம் அல்லவா? இதெல்லாம் உண்டியலானுக்குச் சிறிய விடயமப்பா? ஆ சில சமயம் உந்த மாவீரர்நாள் நிகழ்வை பெரியமண்டபத்தில் நடத்தாமல் தடுத்ததற்காகவும் வழங்கப்பட்டிருக்கலாம்.
