கொழும்பில் தமிழர்கள் வெளியேற்றப்பட்ட சம்பவத்தில் அனைத்துலகத்தின் நிலைப்பாடு ஒன்றே இந்த ஒட்டுமொத்த உலகமும் தவறாக ஏமாற்றப்பட்டதற்கு உதாரணமாகும்.

தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகள் ஊடுருவியிருப்பது என்பது ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் தெரியும்.

கடந்த 30 ஆண்டுகளாக தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகள் திட்டமிட்டு ஐ.நா. நிறுவனங்களுக்குள் ஊடுருவியுள்ளனர். பிரச்சினை என்பது ஐ.நா. அமைப்புகளில் உள்ள உள்ளுர் பணியாளர்களால்தான் என்றார் கோத்தபாய ராஜபக்ச.

இவர் அமெரிக்க குடியுரிமை வைத்திருந்தால், அமெரிக்காவில் வசிப்பவர்கள் யாரவது இலங்கையில் பாதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தால் அல்லது உறவினர்கள் பாதிக்கப்பட்டால், அதற்கு அரசாங்கம் தான் காரணம் என்றால், இவர் மீது அமெரிக்காவில் வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தால்,.... தென்னிலங்கை அரசியலில் பல மாற்றங்கள் வரும்... இதே போல, இலங்கை அரசியலில், தமிழருக்கு எதிராக பல இயங்கும் பல அரசியல் வாதிகள் பலர் பிரித்தானிய குடியுரிமை மற்றும் கடவுச்சீட்டு பெற்றவர்கள்.. இவர்கள் தான் நாம் பாதிக்கப்பட்டத்ற்கு காரணம் என யாராவது பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் பிரித்தானியாவில் சட்ட நடவடிக்கை எடுத்தால் நல்ல மாற்றங்கள் நடைபெறும்.. நான் பாதிக்கப்படவில்லை.. பட்டால் கண்டிப்பாக சட்ட ரீதியாக நடவடிக்கை எடுப்பேன்.. பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் நடவடிக்கை எடுத்தால் தான் பலன் நன்றாக இருக்கும்... இப்படி செய்வதன் மூலம்,இலங்கை அரசின் விளையாட்டுக்களை வெளி உலகுக்கு காட்டலாம்...

Sri Lanka accuses 'bullying' West

Sri Lanka's defence secretary has said the international community, especially the UK and other European nations, are bullying his country over human rights.

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa also said Tamil Tiger rebels had infiltrated the UN's offices in the capital, Colombo, and were feeding it incorrect information.

The British government and UN said Mr Rajapaksa's allegations were unfounded.

His claims came after the controversy over a police operation to evict 400 minority Tamils from Colombo last week.

The Sri Lankan government said the Tamils were being sent to their home areas in the north and east but backed down after an outcry at home and abroad and following a Supreme Court interim order stopping any more evictions.

"This is international bullying," Mr Rajapaksa, who is President Mahinda Rajapaksa's brother, told the BBC and Reuters.

"We won't be isolated. We have all the Saarc [south Asia Association of Regional Co-operation] countries, the Asian countries."

"Britain, or Western countries, the EU countries, they can do whatever. We don't depend on them. They think that they we get aid. No, they are not giving anything."

The UK and the US suspended small amounts of aid to Sri Lanka earlier this year citing human rights concerns.

'Suspicious people'

The defence secretary said the police had taken action against only a small proportion of what he said were 17,000 ethnic minority Tamils living in cheap hotels in the city.

"We have to do search operations and when we arrest suspicious people... you don't know who is who," he said.

"We can't arrest 300 people and then detain them," he added.

"So you tell them: 'You don't have any legal business in Colombo, there is a security problem in Colombo, you are the people who are suspected of... we don't want to detain you, go back to your homes.'"

There have been reports of hundreds of abductions in Sri Lanka, some blamed on the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) and elements in the security forces.

President Rajapaksa has said many of the claims are false and an attempt to discredit his government.

'UN infiltrated'

The defence secretary also condemned what he called "double standards".

"All the militaries do covert operations," he said. "When the US does operations they say covert operations. When something is in Sri Lanka they call abductions. This is playing with the words.

"What I am saying is, if there is a terrorist group, why can't you do anything? It's not against a community... I'm talking about terrorists. Anything is fair."

Mr Rajapaksa added that he was fully against abductions.

And he was critical of the United Nations.

"There are a lot of things happening in the UN," he said.

"The UN organisation has taken a lot of locals into the organisation. For 30 years or so the LTTE planned this, they infiltrated the UN. Take most of the local employees and what they feed is completely different."

'No grounds'

Orla Clinton, the spokesperson for the resident representative of the UN in Colombo, said there were no grounds for Mr Rajapakse's statements.

"In light of the recent attacks on aid workers in the country, our concern is for the safety and security of all our staff, particularly nationals who are the backbone of our operations.

"Negative statements can directly impact upon their safety."

The British High Commission in Colombo also denied the minister's allegation of bullying by the international community.

"We want to work with the government of Sri Lanka," a spokesman said.

"There is no question of bullying or double standards, but the situation in the country is deteriorating," he added.

"The international community is worried about the negative trend of developments in Sri Lanka, particularly in human rights, and we are making this clear."

‘Anything is fair’ when fighting LTTE - Gothabaya

Sri Lanka’s hardline Defence Secretary launched a bitter attack on the international community Tuesday, saying Sri Lanka was being bullied by Western states over human rights. We have to defend ourselves. I'm talking about terrorists. Anything is fair, Gotabaya Rajapaksa told Reuters and the BBC. He said the United Nations agencies had been infiltrated and misled by the Liberation Tigers over 30 years.

Gotabaya, who is also President Mahinda Rajapaksa's brother, accused foreign powers of applying double standards when it comes to human rights violations, saying all measures were fair to defeat Trrorists.

Last week the Sri Lankan government evicted hundreds of Tamils from Colombo triggering a chorus of condemnation from Western states.

This is discrimination and bullying by the international community, Rajapaksa told Reuters and the BBC in an interview Tuesday.

Without understanding the problem, they are trying to bully us, and we won't be isolated. We have all the SAARC countries, the Asian countries, he added. Britain or Western countries, EU countries, they can do whatever. We don't depend on them.

They think that they we get aid. No, they are not giving anything.

Both Britain and the United States have suspended small amounts aid to Sri Lanka this year citing rights abuse concerns though both countries have sharply raised their arms sales to the Sri Lankan military this year.

President Rajapakse last month shrugged off Britain's move to cut aid and vowing that his government would not be held hostage over aid.

And Japan, Sri Lanka’s biggest donor by far, has refused to cut aid. Last week Japan’s peace envoy, Yasushi Akashi, visiting Sri Lanka said human rights may sometimes have to suffer in the war against terror.

Although Prime Minister Ratnisri Wickremenayake apologised for last Wednesday’s expulsions in which hundreds of Tamils were put on busses at gunpoint and sent to the North and East, Mr. Gotabaya defended the government’s actions.

It is a good example where the whole world was misled, he said. Everyone knows the LTTE is infiltrating [the south] ... We can't arrest 300 people and detain them. What is the best option?

He dismissed criticism by international human rights groups and international ceasefire monitors of the SLMM that Sri Lankan security forces are engaged in human rights abuses, including killings and abductions of civilians.

Rajapaksa said British Foreign Office Minister Kim Howells, who visited the island on Monday, had been completely misinformed.

Howells didn't talk a single word against the LTTE, a single word against terrorism, Rajapaksa said. They are threatening isolation, they are stopping aid.

They want us to suffer, he added. When America is attacked ... every country (calls it) war against terrorism, but why are the terrorists being treated in a different way in Sri Lanka? Is Britain talking about isolating America?

Rajapaksa also said U.N. agencies in Sri Lanka, which have also urged the government to halt rights abuses, had been misled by local staff sympathetic to the LTTE.

For 30 years or so, this LTTE planned this, they infiltrated the U.N., Rajapaksa said. The problem is the U.N. organisations, they took a lot of locals (on).

"There are a lot of things happening in the UN," he said.

The United Nations told Reuters the claim was groundless, and voiced concern such comments might expose humanitarian workers to increased risk given the number of aid workers killed in recent years.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Howells said Monday during a visit to Sri Lanka he was worried about growing rights abuses and an escalation in the conflict.

The British minister called for talks with the LTTE.

"I told President Rajapakse that Britain stands ready to offer its skills in peace building.... I told him I know of no conflict that was resolved through military means," Howells was quoted by AFP as saying.

"At the end of the day, you need a political solution to meet the aspirations of the Tamil people," he said.

"Sri Lanka runs the risk of isolation," Howells said, referring to growing international concerns over rights abuses in the island.

"It is very important Sri Lanka is seen to have a human rights record that is clean," he said.

"Human rights is the prime test of whether or not a state conducts itself with modern values."

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka is being bullied by Western countries over human rights, the island's defence secretary said on Tuesday, declaring Tamil Tiger rebels have infiltrated and misled United Nations agencies.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, President Mahinda Rajapaksa's brother, accused foreign powers of applying double standards when it comes to human rights violations, saying all measures were fair to defeat "terrorists".

Rajapaksa's comments came after authorities evicted hundreds of minority ethnic Tamils from the capital last week citing security concerns, a move that drew wide criticism.

"This is discrimination and bullying by the international community," Rajapaksa told Reuters and the BBC in an interview from his heavily-guarded office in the capital Colombo.

"Without understanding the problem, they are trying to bully us, and we won't be isolated. We have all the SAARC countries, the Asian countries," he added. "Britain or Western countries, EU countries, they can do whatever. We don't depend on them."

Both Britain and the United States have suspended some aid to Sri Lanka this year citing rights abuse concerns, and the World Food Programme slapped conditions on food aid to avoid war refugees being resettled against their will.

In the face of international criticism, the government on Sunday said it regretted the eviction of Tamil civilians from the capital and vowed it would not happen again.

"It is a good example where the whole world was misled," Rajapaksa said. "Everyone knows the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) is infiltrating ... We can't arrest 300 people and detain them. What is the best option?

"So you can tell them, if you don't have any legal business in Colombo ... we don't want to detain you, you go back to your homes. In fact this operation was much better. We could have put all of them in detention."

Suspected Tigers have launched a series of deadly attacks in recent months that have killed hundreds of people amid a new chapter in the island's two-decade civil war.

Rights groups, Nordic truce monitors and a U.N. envoy have accused state security forces for repeated abuses, including killings and abductions, which the government says is an effort to tarnish its image.
