இலங்கைத் தமிழர்கள் 83 பேர் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவில் உண்ணாவிரதம்

அவுஸ்திரேலிய அரசாங்கத்திடம் அரசியற் தஞ்சம் கோரியிருக்கும் இலங்கைத் தமிழர்கள் 83 பேர் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவின் நௌரு மாநகரத்தில் நேற்று முன்தினம் சனிக்கிழமை முதல் சாகும் வரை உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர்.

அவர்கள் இப்போராட்டம் குறித்து விளக்கமளித்து அவுஸ்திரேலியாவின் குடிவரவு மற்றும் பிரஜாவுரிமைக்கான அமைச்சர் கெவின் அன்ரூவிற்கு மிகவும் உருக்கமான கடிதம் ஒன்றை எழுதியுள்ளதுடன் அதன் பிரதியை அவுஸ்திரேலிய வெளிவிவகார அமைச்சர் அலெக்சாண்டர் டொனரிற்கும் அனுப்பியுள்ளனர்.

அக்கடிதத்தில் அவர்கள் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளதாவது;

இலங்கையில் புரையோடிக் காணப்படும் இனப்பிரச்சினை காரணமாக சுமார் ஆறு மாதத்துக்கு முன்னர் கடல் வழியாக அவுஸ்திரேலியாவுக்கு தப்பி வர முயன்றோம்.

நாம் நடுக்கடலில் தத்தளித்த போது அவுஸ்திரேலிய கடற்படையினர், சுங்க அதிகாரிகள் மற்றும் பொலிஸாரால் மீட்கப்பட்டு பின்னர் கிறிஸ்மஸ் தீவில் தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டோம்.

நாம் இலங்கையிலிருந்து தப்பி வந்தது முதல் மிகவும் நிர்க்கதியான நிலையில் எதிர்காலம் குறித்த அச்சத்துடனேயே உள்ளோம்.

அவுஸ்திரேலிய அரசாங்கம் எமக்கு அரசியல் தஞ்சம் வழங்க வேண்டுமென எம்மால் விடுக்கப்பட்டு வரும் கோரிக்கைக்கு கடந்த ஆறு மாத காலமாக எவ்வித பதிலும் கிடைக்காதுள்ளமை மிகுந்த ஏமாற்றத்தைத் தந்துள்ளது.

நாம் எமது சொந்த நாட்டில் வாழ முடியாத நிலையில் தான் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவில் தஞ்சம் அடைய வந்துள்ளோம். இலங்கையில் எமது உயிருக்கு உத்தரவாதம் இல்லாத நிலையிலேயே அங்கிருந்து தப்பினோம். இலங்கையில் பாரதூரமான முறையில் மிகவும் மோசமான மனித உரிமை மீறல் நடவடிக்கைகள் தொடர்ந்தும் இடம்பெற்ற வண்ணமுள்ளன. இம்மனித உரிமை மீறல் சம்பவங்கள் குறித்து நன்றாக தெரிந்திருந்தும் கூட சர்வதேச சமூகம் வெறுமனே மௌனமாக இருப்பது எமக்கு மிகவும் கவலையளிக்கிறது. எமது சொந்த இடமான இலங்கையின் வடக்கு பகுதியில் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் சுமார் 10 பேர் சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்படுகிறார்கள்.

மூன்று நேரம் தவறாமல் சாப்பிடுவது மாத்திரம் வாழ்க்கையல்ல. எனவே, எமக்கு அரசியற் தஞ்சம் வழங்கும் வகையில் சாகும் வரையான உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டத்தை முன்னெடுக்க வேண்டி ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. எமது நிர்க்கதியான நிலையை சர்வதேச சமூகத்துக்கு குறிப்பாக, அவுஸ்திரேலிய அரசாங்கத்துக்கு உணர்த்தும் விதமாகவும் சர்வதேச சமூகம் மற்றும் அவுஸ்திரேலிய அரசாங்கத்தின் கவனத்தை எம்மீது திருப்பும் முகமாகவும் இப்போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபடுகிறோம்.

எமக்கு யாருடைய மனதையும் புண்படுத்தும் நோக்கம் கிடையாது. நாம் உடல்ரீதியாகவும் உளரீதியாகவும் பெரிதும் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். எமது நிர்க்கதி நிலையை புரிந்து கொண்டு அவுஸ்திரேலிய அரசாங்கம் அரசியற் தஞ்சம் தர முன்வர வேண்டும்.

அவுஸ்திரேலிய அரசாங்கத்திடமிருந்து சாதகமான பதில் கிடைக்கும் வரை சாகும்வரையான உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டம் தொடரும் எனத் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Hunger striking Sri Lankan asylum seekers being held on Nauru say they are ready to die rather than wait indefinitely for the Australian government to process their cases.

At least three of the detainees have been taken to hospital, after refusing almost all fluids and food since September 1.

It is understood 55 of the 82 Sri Lankans on Nauru have joined the hunger strike, and are accepting only two cups of tea each day.

The group has said their hunger strike will end only when Australia gives them a time frame for processing their applications.

A 34-year-old hunger striker, who wished to be known only as Pulendren, said the group would die rather than be sent home or wait indefinitely on Nauru.

“One year or one month? We only want a time frame. We are getting food and medicine, but it is not a life,” he said.

“If we don’t get any response from the Australian government we can’t stop this strike. While we are living like this it is better we die.”

Pulendren said the asylum seekers had been in Nauru for almost seven months, after being intercepted by Australian authorities.

“We are also humans. Please try to understand our situation.

We are living here and we want a future. Please try to understand our feelings,” he said.

Asylum seekers kept on mainland Australia must have their claims processed within 90 days.

He said he left his homeland in June last year, amid fears he would be shot because he is ethnically Tamil.

Australia set-up the immigration processing centre in Nauru as part of the so-called Pacific Solution, to stop unauthorised boat arrivals reaching Australia.

Pulendren said conditions in Nauru were poor, with hot weather making it uncomfortable.

Mark Getchell from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) who undertakes the care and maintenance of asylum seekers in Nauru, said six of the Sri Lankans remained in hospital as a result of the hunger strike.

“Some are refusing both food and water, and some may have been taking some fluids at some point. Several have gone unconscious,” he said.

Nauru Foreign Minister David Adeang this week told AAP his government wanted changes to the way the processing centre operated.

“We are for instance looking at improving arrangements whereby residents at the facility can still enjoy freedom of movement on Nauru whilst still assuring safety and security of Nauruans.

“We are also interested in seeing the refugee determination process undertaken with minimal delay,” Adeang said.

Until recently asylum seekers in Nauru were able to leave the centre, but they have been locked-down after a local Nauruan woman was allegedly raped and assaulted by six of the inmates.

A spokeswoman for Australian Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews could not be immediately contacted.

அவுஸ்ரேலியா கிறிஸ்மஸ் தீவுக்கு சட்டவிரோதமாக சென்ற 83 இலங்கையர்ளில் 53 பேர் உண்ணாநிலைப் போராட்டத்தை ஆரம்பித்திருந்தனர் என்பது இங்கே குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

இவர்களின் 8 பேர் மயங்கமடைந்து மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிற்சை பெற்றுள்ளனர். இவர்களில் இருவர் தொடர்ந்து சிகிற்சை பெற்று வருகின்றனர்.

SEVENTY-TWO Sri Lankans who were among 83 asylum seekers intercepted en route to Australia in February have been accepted as refugees.

Only one had been refused refugee status, Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said.

Assessments for seven had not yet been finalised, while one man, whose status was yet to be determined, was receiving medical treatment in Perth.

A further two had already been classed as refugees in Indonesia before setting off for Australia.

"Today my department has advised 72 Sri Lankan asylum seekers that they have been assessed as being refugees,'' Mr Andrews said in a statement today.

"A further two Sri Lankans were found to be refugees by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in Indonesia before they travelled to Australia.

"Assessments for seven other Sri Lankans in Nauru are still under consideration. These cases will be finalised when outstanding issues have been resolved.''

The man whose asylum claim had been refused was able to seek a review of the decision, Mr Andrews said.

The Sri Lankans have been held on Nauru for several months since their vessel was intercepted by HMAS Success near Christmas Island on February 20.

The Sri Lankan government had branded the group ``economic refugees'' and demanded Australia return them to their war-torn homeland.

Breast groper avoids deportation

A Sri Lankan man has narrowly avoided being deported after his conviction for groping women on public buses.

Mohammed Ilham Fareed, 30, was sentenced to 10 months jail in the Brisbane District Court after pleading guilty to three counts of sexual assault.

He will serve just two months of the sentence, and will be allowed to remain in Australia after his release.

Under current federal legislation any jail sentence of 12 months or more results in failure of the "character test" and automatic deportation.

The court was told the offences took place over a six-week period between August and October 2006 on a Brisbane City Council bus service that ran between the city centre and Carindale, in Brisbane's east.

One three occasions Fareed, who moved to Australia from Sri Lanka in 2005, reached between the seat and the side of the bus to grab the breast of a woman sitting in front of him.

On the first occasion the 19-year-old victim felt something on her chest and thought it was a spider until she looked down to see a hand disappearing between the gap.

The 27-year-old second victim, who woke up to find him groping her, confronted Fareed and reported him to the bus driver, but he disembarked before police could arrive.

The third woman, 35, also confronted him but he again got off the bus and managed to evade capture.

Police arrested him in November after the 35-year-old victim saw him get back on the same bus.

The court was told Fareed, who committed the offences on his way to work, cried when confronted and begged the bus driver not to report him.

Judge Helen O'Sullivan was appalled at Fareed's behaviour, describing it as "foolish" and "incredibly insulting" to his wife.

"Women are entitled to travel on buses without being subjected to this sort of unacceptable conduct," Judge O'Sullivan said.

"You need to be stopped doing this Mr Fareed.

"It's not acceptable in any country, and it's certainly not acceptable in Australia."
