நூல் அறிமுகம் - Materialism

       முன்பெல்லாம் முதலில் யாழில் பதிவேற்றிய பின்னரே அதன் இணைப்பை ஏனைய வலைத்தளங்களில் பதிவு செய்வது என் வழக்கம். தற்சமயம் நிழற்படம் அல்லது வீடியோவுடன் பதிவிட வேண்டி சிலவற்றை முகநூலில் ஏற்றி, பின்னர் மீள்பதிவாக யாழில் பதிவேற்றுகிறேன். கீழ்க்காணும் நூல் அறிமுகமும் எனது முகநூல் பதிவு. புத்தக அட்டை இறுதியில் உள்ள இணைப்பில் :

       என் நண்பரும் குருநாதருமான ஆங்கிலப் பேராசிரியர் முனைவர் ச.தில்லைநாயகம் அவர்கள், தந்தை பெரியாரின் 'பொருள் முதல்வாதம்' எனும் நூலினைத் தமக்கே உரித்தான எளிய, தரமான ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழி பெயர்த்துள்ளார்கள். அஃதாவது பாமரர்க்கான எளிமையும் சான்றோர்க்கான தரமும் என இரு நோக்கு அன்னாரது மொழிச் சிறப்பு. இம்மொழி பெயர்ப்பு 'கலப்பை பதிப்பக'த்தால் வெளியிடப் பட்டுள்ளது. இந்நால் தமிழ் நிலத்திற்கு அப்பால் உள்ள வாசகர்க்கும் ஆனதால், பெரியாரின் நிகரற்ற வாழ்வு பற்றிய குறிப்பும் வரையப் பெற்றுள்ளது.

          முன்பு பேரா. தில்லைநாயகம் அவர்கள் தமது திருக்குறள் தமிழ் உரை மற்றும் அதன் ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்பு நூலுக்குத் தமிழில் அணிந்துரை தர அடியேனுக்கு அன்புக் கட்டளையிட்டது போல், இந்நூலுக்கு ஆங்கிலத்தில் அறிமுகவுரை தரப் பணித்தது எனது எழுத்துக்கான வெகுமதி. இனி அந்த அறிமுகவுரையும் இறுதியில் நூலின் அட்டையும் :

                   PREFACE

This book by Prof. S.Thillainayagam is in two parts, the first part is the English translation of the eight chapters of the book Materialism (Porulmudhalvaadham)  penned by Periyar in Tamil and the second a brief sketch on Periyar's life and times. The target reader is obviously the non-Tamil speaking common man in India and outside and hence the author has naturally come out with a simple but powerful language befitting Periyar's message to the world at large. As the book is mainly for the non-Tamils, Thillainayagam has found it imperative that a chapter on Periyar is appended.
            The first part Materialism deals with Periyar's down to earth philosophical reflections on god, religion, soul, I (who am I ?), heaven and hell etc… Periyar, being a man for all, cannot afford to be an abstruse philosopher catering only to the elite. He comes down heavily on the society's stereotypical notions on religious charity, sin, virtue and good conduct in simple words and examples from day-to-day life. Atheism and rationalism were the be-all and end-all of his life.
             The title 'Periyar' bestowed upon him means 'Great Man' in Tamil. The first part Materialism shows Periyar as 'Periyar' in his own words and the second part Periyar’s Life, in the words of Thillainayagam, shows why and how Periyar is 'Periyar' in his deeds. 
A brief but perfect picturisation of Periyar right from his boyhood is a deserving tribute to the man he was, besides being a wholesome introduction to someone who had sown the seeds of the Self-Respect Movement in Tamil Nadu and had seen it within his lifetime, grow and blossom as the most humanitarian movement.
 The problems Periyar faced in his struggle for the oppressed classes were multifaceted. He had to fight not just against the regressive forces in the Brahminical camp but even against people of great stature, the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Rajagopalachari who were steeped in the varnashram and the Manu dharma evils. Thillainayagam has taken great efforts to prove his point with facts and figures. I'm sure that this will earn him kudos from all progressive-minded people.
