Secretary

UNICEF Canada

Dear Sir,

As a member of Canadian tamil of Sri Lankan origin, I wish to apologize for the inconvenince that the today's demonstration organized in front of your Toronto office may cause to you.

I am really intrigued by your lack of action or inaction on the Sri Lankan situation where over 60,000 children are long kept behind barb wire rings. These children haven't had schooling for the last two years.

When I look back on the events a year ago, UNICEF had been very vocal on 'bring back child soldiers' in Sri Lanka. Now, we do not see the same level of intensity in liberating these children in the camps except few expressions of your 'serious concerns' from time to time.

The need to de-mine the region for a rapid resettlement is absolutely a fabrication by the Sri Lankan government. The extensive presence of the military in the areas where these children used to play and pursue a simple childhood life and the vastness of land that they had to trek through to reach the camps are not supporting the Sri Lankan claims.

I understand that the world is moving very slowly in upholding the fundamentals of human rights due to geopolitical and/or other economic reasons. It should not have any hurdles on the part of a not-for-profit organization like yours in liberating the children from their current plight.

Respectfully awaiting,

Thank you.

Secretary, UNICEF, Canada.

Dear Sir,

Re: Let our 100,000 children to live free as Yours!!!,

We, the Canadian Tamils stayed a peaceful protest in front of your 2200 Yonge Street office to remind the pathetic situation of our children in the Sri Lankan ill-fated concentration camps. You promised to come to the stage but unfortunately your promise is not full filled. During this post war period, your organization treat our children as second-class citizen and carrying out the never-mind policy regarding the future of our infants. You neglect your responsibility and failed to use our hard earned tax money for the benefits of our children.

For many years you used to complain about the recruitment of child soldiers but now you are not feeling shame for the present condition of our children in the hands of Sri Lankan murderous armed forces. These children haven't had schooling for the last two years. The kids are denied their basic education and facing starvation and diseases. Many of them are separated from their parents.Thousands of these kids have lost their parents in the war and have become orphans. They are facing abduction for sexual labour and child labour by the security forces.

The torrential rains in Vavuniya burst temporary sewage pipes, destroyed make-shift shelters and trapped thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) interned in the camps causing many of them to undergo severe difficulties as rain waters filled with sewage matter, maggots and human excreta rose in tents sheltering the IDPs. If only three or four hours of rain cause this much chaos, only imagine what a full monsoon can cause!!! The people are soaked and standing on the open terrain with their children and disabled. The children are starving for many days.

Very recently there were 5,731 IDP students in the camps sat the Year 5 scholarship examination. Desks and tables were not provided to the students and they were provided with cardboard. Students were asked to sit on the ground and keep white sheets on the cardboard placed on the wet floor and write the examination.

Therefore, we ask your organization for full access to the camps and persuade the UN to take the full control of all detention camps and let the IDPs to return to their homes before the “MONSOON RAIN”.

Thank you for your immediate actions.

Yours Truly,

re: Sri Lanka: Children of Tamileelam and what is our collective responsibility

We all made headlines and cared for children of Tamileelam, namely when they were recruited as child soldiers. Then we kept them telling they would all be OK once "liberated" and now more than 100 days passed, what do we tell them now? There are an estimated 100000 children among the 300000 IDPs in many Nazi style camps.

* more than 30000 children are traumatized and either lost their one parent or both

* nearly 30000 children have an injury or has become a handicap

* every children has been denied access to education

* more than 300 children denies university entry

* children are raped by the soldiers on a daily basis

Please use your honorable noble power to free these children from the clutches of terror!

Turly waiting to hear from You,
