Britain’s Foreign Office Minister, Peter Hain, Wednesday expressed his government’s support for Norway’s efforts to bring about negotiations to end Sri Lanka’s protracted conflict and urged compromise on both sides. "I am convinced that both the [sri Lankan] government’s insistence upon the territorial sovereignty of the whole island and the LTTE’s objective of autonomy can be secured," he said. "But for that to happen the shooting must stop and the talking must start."[/size]

[size=5]Sri Lanka’s elected leaders "need to sit with people who may well be responsible for assassinations, but who do have a legitimate political programme which needs to be engaged, not shunned," Hain, on his first visit to Sri Lanka, said in his address to the British Council in Colombo.[/size]

[size=5]Conversely, the Liberation Tigers needed to acknowledge "a Tamil Kingdom" will not receive recognition,[but] the principle of self-determination "would be supported by the international community," he said.[/size]

[size=5]Much of Hain’s speech focused on Britain’s experience in Northern Ireland. The conflict there was resolved through devolution following "centuries of bitter violence, terrorism, discrimination and injustice," he said. "We have not yet secured genuinely lasting peace embraced by all, but we are making significant progress."[/size]

[size=5]He said Britian’s rule of Ireland, which began in 1801 with the marriage of Great Britain and the island, "was often violent and oppressive," and led to "overwhelming pressure for an independent Irish state" after WWI, leading to the creation of the present Republic in the south, but left in British control six counties in the north where "Nationalists (Catholics) were excluded from power by the Unionist (Protestant) majority which ruled with intolerance, injustice and blatant discrimination."[/size]

[size=5]The present "Good Friday Agreement" of 1998 represented the best chance of peace in a generation, he said.

He said underlying the Agreement is "the acceptance by all that the people of Northern Ireland are free to choose whether to remain part of the Unied Kingdom, as the majority clearly want at present, or to become part of Ireland."

1997 : This morning the Sri Lankan Army attempted to advance on two fronts from Puthur towards Mannankkulam, Kanakarayankulam in Vanni. The LTTE launched a counter offensive and there was heavy fighting between the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE from early morning till 3.00 pm in the evening. 300 Sinhala troops were killed, many were injured, and the Sri Lankan Army was forced to withdraw. 133 bodies of Sinhalese soldiers were recovered by the LTTE and out of these the 113 which were in good condition were handed over to the ICRC. The remaining 20 bodies which were in bad condition were cremated by the LTTE. In this successful counter offensive 35 LTTE fighters including 10 women fighters were martyred. Huge amounts of arms and ammunitions were captured by the LTTE.

1995 : Sri Lanka army raises the National Flag over the center of the Jaffna city, captured after a fierce 50 day offensive, having flattened much of the populated areas between Palaly airport and Jaffna.

Hundreds of Tamil homes were deliberately set on fire by the Sri Lankan army and caused more than 1200 families to flee to the neighbouring villagers.

Sri Lanka airforce carried out heavy bombing of Jaffna town. The bombardment which was directed to several parts of the town resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. 71 others were injured. It is learnt that the air raid was carried out between 8.30 and 9.00 by the Sri Lankan airforce Puccara planes. Gurunagar, Pasayur and Chinn-akaddai were amongst the areas that were attacked. The vicinity of the St.James Refugee Camp where persons had sought refuge from earlier bombardments was also attacked during the Sunday raid.

The Consortium of the Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Jaffna will mark International Human Rights Day as a "Black Day". This will be done as a protest against the Sri Lankan government's attitude towards human rights violations.

 

1999 : Young mother gang-raped and murdered
A young woman was gang-raped and murdered by unidentified gunmen near Kannakai Amman Temple in Punguduthivu, an islet off Jaffna peninsula, Tuesday night, residents said. Her body, covered with Palmyrah leaves, was found yesterday morning, about 100 metres from her house, they added.

 

1999: 350,000 people in Wanni starving
The Bishop of Mannar, Rt. Rev. Rayappu Joseph, who visited the Wanni area at the weekend, declared yesterday that most of the 350,000 people living in the district are starving. The Bishop has requested the Governor of the North-East Province, Major General Ashoka Jayawardena to take immediate action to send food to the Wanni area.

1990 : two tamil villagers were killed
2 Villagers named T.Krishnapillai and Y.Sivalingam who went into the jungle were shot dead by the Sri Lankan Army.

 

1990: A Tamil old man was killed
An airforce plane dropped bombs. A bomb fell near multi-purpose Co-operative society, where relief supplies were being distributed at that time. An old man named K.Tharumaiah aged 60 was blown into piece. Several others were injured.

The army from Neelavanai army camp along with TELO members, rounded up the people who were going through the Neelavanni village. All of them taken to army camp, tortured and killed. Tires were put over the dead bodies and burnt. Some of them are students going for examination.

 

1997: School teacher shot dead
A school teacher identified as S. Raveenthiran was shot dead by the SLA in Kaithady in Jaffna last night around 9.30 p.m. The Chavakachcheri Police brought his body to the Jaffna hospital mortuary today claiming that it was that of an LTTE activist.

 

1998: Displaced housed in schools
Ten schools in the Puthukudiyeruppu area of the Mullaithivu district, have been turned into welfare centres to accommodate the displaced refugees from the Oddusuddan area the Voice of Tigers (VoT) said.

A student named M.Pakirathan aged 14 was taken by the army to camp in Kaluthavalai, Batticoloa. He is presumed dead.

 

2000 : Police say no to Jaffna Church peace march

The Sri Lankan Police Thursday refused permission to the Catholic church in the north to go on a peace procession in Jaffna town. A Catholic church spokesman said that the Police denied permission for the procession on the grounds that the security situation in the Jaffna town did not permit it. He said the march had been organised as a remembrance of a saint of the church.

1997 : At 6:55 AM today, LTTE's special leopard unit attacked the Sinhalese army at Othiyamalai, near Manal Aru. 3 Sri Lankan soldiers were killed and for the loss of one LTTE fighter. Meanwhile, on 24 November, two Sinhalese intelligence officers working for the occupying Sri Lankan army were shot and killed by the LTTE near Nallur temple (in Jaffna town).

A three month old infant and his fifteen year old brother were killed allegedly when the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) opened fire in a house at Kilaly, southeast of Jaffna last night said hospital sources in the north.

 

1999: Released detainee found dead
The body of Christy Jesuthsan,25, was found washed ashore at Pallimunai, a suburb of Mannar town, this afternoon said sources. He had been arrested by the Counter Subversive Unit (CSU) of the Police and later released by the Mannar Magistrate Mr.Ilancheliyan on October 14.

 

19994 : boys missing in Jaffna
Four schoolboys have been reported 'missing' by their parents in the Thenmaradchi Division of the Jaffna Peninsula, said sources. The parents have informed the Human Rights Commission and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) officials, the sources said. According to HRC sources the students are from Kachchai road of Kodikamam. Thangamailan Mayooran,17, G.C.E (A/L) is a student at the Chavakachcheri Hindu College. The other three, Velnayagam Maran,Sinnathamby Mathiyalakan, Thambirasa Latheeswaran, are students of Thirunavukkarasu Maha Vidyalayam.
