Dear Friends,

The 19th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) taking place in Geneva will shortly be upon us. On Monday 27th February there is a large Tamil demonstration outside their offices. The London-Geneva walkers (http://forjusticeandpeace.org/) will arrive to take part! The session will last for one month so we must do all we can to maintain pressure upon the Council as soon as possible.

We recently asked you to send an e-mail to the e-campaign group Avaaz asking them to contact their 13 million subscribers to support an Independent international investigation into war crimes. Thanks to all who did so but we need more e-mails!

SEND AVAAZ AN E-MAIL NOW!

Copy and paste the letter below and e-mail to info@avaaz.org

Dear Avaaz,

I am a supporter of a Human Rights campaigning group that focuses on Sri Lanka and is known as ACT NOW: Stop Human Rights abuses in Sri Lanka. It was formed in the latter part of 2008 by, amongst others, a number of NGO's that had worked and seen with their own eyes the treatment metered out to civilians by the armed forces. They were particularly concerned about the casualties that civilians were suffering in an increasingly bloody conflict between Tamil rebels and Government forces that had re-erupted in 2008.

This war in Sri Lanka continued to its' bitter end in May 2009 but ever since there have been allegations that War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity were committed against Tamil civilians. The calls for an Independent International investigation became so strong that last year the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon even commissioned a report from a special UN Advisory Panel. Their report concluded that there was plenty of evidence to suggest war crimes and crimes against humanity had taken place, but that an Independent Investigation was required to take matters forward (see http://www.un.org/News/dh/infocus/Sri_Lanka/POE_Report_Full.pdf).

Further evidence was revealed later in the year by Channel 4’s documentary ‘Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields’ (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/sri-lankas-killing-fields/4od). Yet, despite the evidence no Independent International Investigation has yet been organised?

The UN Human Rights Council (UNHCR) is meeting for its' 19th session in Geneva between the 27th of February to the 23rd March. There are many activities being organised in an attempt to put the UNHRC under pressure to include a debate on initiating an independent investigation into war crimes. What we desperately need to see however is hundreds of thousands of e-mails going to the UNHRC. We believe Avaaz is best equipped to make that happen!

We appreciate that you will do your own research but we enclose a possible e-mail that you could perhaps use/improve etc.

This would be sent to their address at

To: UNHRC

Re: The U.N.Human Rights Council should get behind the calls for an independent international investigation ‘war crimes’, ‘crimes against humanity’ and ‘genocide’ against Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka

Throughout a brutal thirty year civil war that only ended in May 2009 Tamil civilians were the main victims. This culminated in the latter part of that war with the slaughter of anything up to 40,000 civilians by Sri Lankan armed forces indiscriminately shelling them in a small narrow strip of Mullaitivu (a so-called 'Safe Zone') and 50,000 more maimed in matter of few days including many thousands of children.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon commissioned his own Advisory Panel which recommended that an independent investigation take place. A mountain of evidence has also been presented by human rights groups such as the New York based Human Rights Watch (HRW), London based Amnesty International (AI), the Brussels based International Crisis Group on Sri Lanka’s war crimes and crimes against humanity and news organisations such as Channel Four see http://www.channel4.com/programmes/sri-lankas-killing-fields/4od).

I therefore urge the UNHRC put a discussion of an independent international investigation into allegations of 'war crimes', 'crimes against humanity' onto your agenda at the forthcoming 19th session (27/2-23/3).

Thank you in anticipation.
