Bangladesh stormed into the finals of the Asian Cup when they beat the struggling Sri Lankan side comprehensively in a rain-hit match at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, yesterday.

Even though the home side won a crucial match against the Indians, yesterday's game against the Lankans was a must win for them in order to get into the finals with the Pakistanis who are still unbeaten in the series.

Electing to field first the Bangladeshis managed to get the best out of their decision as they went through the Lankan top order quickly, Lankans were three down for 32 with all their top guns, Dilshan, Mahela and Sangakkara were back in the dressing room quickly.

However, Chamara Kapugedera who got another chance to prove himself as a middle order batsmen triumphed yesterday with a well made 62, gradually guiding the Lankans to a some sort of safety, Lahiru Thirimanne and Upul Tharanga also contributed 48 runs each to help Lankans to score 232 runs in 49.5 overs.

Nazmul Hossain bagged three wickets for Bangladeshis while Shakib Al Hasan also taking two for 56 runs.

After a brief interruption due to rain, the Bangladeshi got a target of 212 runs in 40 overs to chase to book their place in the finals.

However, breaking the hopes of a packed house with the local fans, Lankans then went onto take three quick wickets for 40 runs, destroying the foundation of the Bengal tigers.

With the ball for Lankans Nuwan Kulasekara (2/30) and Sachithra Senanayake (2/38) bagged two each but that wasn''t enough to stop Bangladeshis party.

The crucial partnership between Tamim Iqbal (59) and Shakib Al Hasan (56) made the difference between the two teams and put Bangladeshis into a dominant position, even though the Lankans managed to get rid of these two cameos by Nasir Hossain (36) and Mahmudullah (32) secured the game for the home side and they will now play against Pakistan in the finals on March 22.

Shakib Al Hasan was rewarded as the player of the match for his all round performances.
