Cycling, marathon and closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games will be telecast live from air as the government on Friday allowed using helicopters over the road events and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The decision to allow helicopters to fly over designated roads of cycling and marathon and the stadium was taken at a high-level meeting attended by top Home Ministry officials and security agencies.

However, the choppers will not be allowed to fly over the no-fly areas like Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House and Prime Minister’s residence.

The cycling event will be held on Sunday and marathon and closing ceremony are scheduled for October 14.

Earlier, Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Fennell said the aerial shots of Delhi will be a “scenic appearance” and its broadcast all over the world would be a “fantastic” promotion of the city.

Meanwhile, the government is expecting that several heads of states would participate in the closing ceremony.

“Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has confirmed his participation in the closing ceremony. We are expecting several more heads of state’s attendance,” an official said.

1. How many Indian fishermenr have been killed Sri Lanka and Rajabakse

2. India should ask for Kachatheevu Island which could be given to China that is only some 18KM away

3. Sri Lanka is an enemy of HIndus as it keeps destroying temples

4. Sri Lanka trains Islamists terrorists to attack India

5. Sri Lanka is a terrorist state

This appeared in Australia media today - Mark Colvin is a well-known Australia radio presenter. Please leave your comments - the story is sure to be bombarded by anti-Tamil comments soon. So, please comment.

மாதிரி கருத்துக்கள்

1. Thanks Mark Colvin and ABC for this great piece which highlights how the world should not forget leaders who have violated human rights and humanity. As I recall, UN has accused Sri Lanka of bombing hospitals despicable!

2. Sri Lanka is not a country where Commonwealth games need to be hosted. Thanks I will pass.

3. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International Crisis Group have called for independent investigations, Sri Lanka has remained defiant, including by refusing visas to a panel experts from the United Nations. Then why would Commonwealth would host its leader?

4. Sri Lanka is an embarrassment to the Commonwealth. It has an atrocious human rights record and latest constitutional amendment which removed the term limits for a sitting president shows that it is only becoming less democratic. The Commonwealth members should exert pressure on the Sri Lankan government, as they did with Zimbabwe and Fiji.

5. Here is a list of a few samples of Sri Lanka's atrocities and one have to wonder what in the world Commonwealth has been thinking:

War Crimes in Sri Lanka, International Crisis Group, 17 May 2010: ''... UN-mandated international inquiry should be the priority, ....''

Sri Lanka: Government Proposal Won’t Address War Crimes, Human Rights Watch, 7 May 2010

Call on UN to investigate Sri Lanka rights violations, Amnesty International, 17 May 2010

http://www.icj.org/dwn/database/BeyondLawfulConstraints-SLreport-Sept2010.pdf

Beyond Lawful Constraints: Sri Lanka’s Mass Detention of LTTE Suspects, International Commission of Jurists, September 2010:

''This report addresses human rights concerns arising from what may be the largest mass administrative detention anywhere in the world. ….''

6. Journalists continue to be intimidated. Sandun Jayasekera, a senior journalist of the English Daily Mirror was assaulted by security officers at the Maharagama Cancer hospital. Prageeth Eknaligoda of Lanka e-News who reported the election irregularities has gone missing for the last 100 days. A popular TV station MTV came under attack by an armed group led by Deputy Minister Mervin Silva: http://www.dailymirror.lk/print/index.php/news/news/9774.html

Clearly Sri Lanka has a long way to go to meet the stipulated conventions.

7. Sri Lanka has again and again, shown to the world that it is a democracy elected by a dominated ethnic majority with a national minority continuosly kept oppressed and discriminated for more than five decades. Far more, now the ongoing internal colonialism and forceful hegemony with militarization in the Tamil regions, the people will never be able to express their grievances and aspirations.

8. The present Sri Lankan regime does not even accommodate dissidents from the majority Sinhala community, including the former army commander, opposition political parties, dissident voices, independent media and even some ruling party government ministers.

9. There is no conducive environment in Sri Lanka to experience human fundamental rights including basic human needs (non negotiable rights such as survival, well being, freedom and identity according to peace studies scholars) and to enjoy the values of democracy. The recent passing of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution makes it easier for Sri Lankan rulers to further centralise the power than decentralizing it.

10. With the unimaginable silence on the part of the international community, Sri Lanka has enjoyed every shortcomings in her commitment to the UN Charter and civilization.
