Support free journalism in US and Sri Lanka

July 6, 2012

Dear UNCA Executive Committee,

I am writing to request that journalist Matthew R. Lee remain a member of the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA). Expelling him from the UNCA would create a major void in investigative and cutting-edge journalism as Mr. Lee is responsible for providing information on several important international issues.

In particular, Mr. Lee’s coverage of the UN’s policies and actions regarding Sri Lanka has been crucial to understanding the human rights situation there. He also exposed the suffering of the internally displaced Tamil population following the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war in 2009. His writing has shown the public the ongoing injustices committed by the Sri Lankan government. Furthermore, Mr. Lee’s journalistic style challenges perspectives provided by mainstream journalists and reveals the reality that is covered up by government personnel and policymakers.

As you know, Sri Lanka’s journalists face censorship, restrictions, threats and extra-judicial killing because they possess the same character and courage that Mr. Lee has demonstrated as a journalist. Therefore, we urge you to show your solidarity with journalists in Sri Lanka and elsewhere by keeping Mr. Lee as a member of the UNCA.
