PETITION: Condemn Srilanka for the Brutal attack on Jaffna University Students

To: United Nations

The Tamils have lost nearly 300,000 in the 35-years war. They have every right to remember their dead. When the Jaffna University students were peacefully remembering the fallen heroes, the SL military and police entered into the gents as well as ladies hostels and assaulted the students, including girls. Even a silent demonstration the following day was attacked. Around 10 university students including girls were injured and were brought to the hospital.

We wish to bring this issue to the Global Community, as we still believe United Nations is one of the supreme authority to condemn the Genocidal Nation Srilanka and take appropriate action against the Government of Srilanka and it's responsible leaders.

Condemn Srilanka, Go for the Polls to free Tamil Ealam Nation.

Statement Condemning the Arrest and Unlawful Detention of Four Students from the University of Jaffna, and Calling for their Immediate Release

6th December, 2012

We the undersigned, strongly condemn the arrest of four students of the University of Jaffna (UoJ) by the Terrorism Investigation Department (TID) on Thursday, November 29, 2012. While welcoming the release of Kanesamoorthy Sutharsan, a student of the Jaffna Medical Faculty on the morning of Tuesday, December 4, we condemn the continued detention of the remaining three Jaffna University Student Union members: Sanmugam Solaman (24), Kanagasundram Jenamajenth, and Student Union Secretary Paramalingam Tharshaanan (24).

The four are part of a group of seven Jaffna University students who were summoned by the Kopai Police (in the Jaffna District) on Thursday, November 29, 2012, in connection with an alleged arson (petrol bomb) attack on the office of the Sri Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) in Thirunelvely, Jaffna. Sri-TELO had opened its office at Thirunelvely near the Jaffna University, only a week prior to the alleged arson attack. The students were later charged with putting up posters around the Jaffna University relating to Maaveerar Naal (LTTE heroes/martyrs day) which fell on Tuesday, November 27, 2012.

Update as at 7.30pm on the 6th of November, 2012

On the morning of 6th December, 2012, the Kopai Police have handed over a list of a further 10 students to the University authorities to be handed over to the Police for questioning, over an undisclosed charge. The list includes five students from the Jaffna University Medical Faculty and the Presidents of the Jaffna University Student Union, Science Faculty Union and Management Faculty Union. Currently the five Medical Faculty students are being accompanied by the Faculty Dean and lecturers, to the Vavuniya TID office for questioning. The situation in the Jaffna University remains tense and volatile.

Release arrested Tamil students immediately: Paul Murphy, MEP

Tamil_Soldiraity_protest_UK_01_101367_44

Conveying his solidarity with students’ protests in Jaffna, Paul Murphy, MEP, in a statement demanded the immediate release of the arrested Tamil students and political prisoners.

In a solidarity message sent to an emergency demonstration organized outside the Sri Lankan High Commission in London on Friday, Mr. Murphy said "I express my solidarity with the protest taking place against the arrest of Tamil students in Sri Lanka. I demand that the Sri Lankan government release all those arrested immediately. The arrest of these students under the Prevention of Terrorism Act just for participating in a peaceful protest shows the extent of how much the democratic rights are under attack in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan government must end this immediately and release all political prisoners.”

Commonwealth Secretariat

Dear Mr.Uku,

Linked below an appeal for an evaluation by the CMAG by the Sri Lankan opposition MP and former Foreign Minister Mr. Mangala Samaraweera, regarding the current violations by the Sri Lankan administration of Commonwealth Latimer Principles on the three branches of Government and Harare Principles of Democracy and Rule of Law.

Accountability is the key to fighting impunity and we thank you for your attention to this pressing matter

Secretary General Of The Commonwealth Should Take Urgent Action

December 8, 2012

Mangala Samaraweera MP

On 7th December 2012, President Mahinda Rajapakse and Commonwealth Secretary General Kamelesh Sharma announced that the next Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting will be held in Colombo from 15th – 17th November 2013.

On the same afternoon, in a twist of irony, the Opposition MPs walked out of Parliament in protest against the manner in which the Parliament under the directions of President Rajapake, is proceeding with a politically motivated impeachment motion against the Chief Justice, in violation of the Commonwealth Latimer Principles on the three branches of Government.

As the current Chair of the Parliamentary Commonwealth Union, Sri Lanka has now an even greater responsibility to uphold the principles contained in the Harare Declaration to work with ‘renewed vigor to protect and promote the fundamental political values of the Commonwealth.’

However, in Sri Lanka, ever since the Presidential ‘power- grab’ of 2010, when the 18th Amendment to the constitution was rushed through Parliament, it was becoming increasingly clear that the Rajapakse regime was moving away from Commonwealth values and principles. Democratic institutions have been systematically dismantled since then but the impeachment process – more akin to a witch trial of the dark ages -unleashed against the Chief Justice has now exposed the true agenda of the regime at its worst.

It is in this context that the Secretary General of the Commonwealth should take urgent action to request the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) to evaluate the present situation in Sri Lanka and report if the actions of the Sri Lankan Government are in keeping with its declared commitment to the Harare Principles of Democracy and the Rule of Law.

Mangala Samaraweera MP
Former Foreign Minister.

Subject: Continued sexual violence against Tamil women and girls in Sri Lanka

To: michelle.bachelet@unwomen.org
Cc: info@ngocsw.org, civil.society@unwomen.org

December 14, 2012

Under-Secretary General and Executive Director, UN Women

Dear Madame Michelle Bachelet and UN women;

I would like to bring to your immediate attention about an alarming situation facing the Tamil women forcibly conscripted by the Sri Lankan military in northern province of the country.

Reports suggest 17 female recruits (out of hundreds conscripted) belonging to SLA 6th Brigade, were admitted to two military hospitals with mental illnesses and 'possessed' mental states, some were unconscious upon arrival. Sources close to the hospitals say that there is no sign of any patients being out of hospital yet and some of them are still unconscious or hallucinating. Around 8 girls were noticed in a mentally affected state last week in the military camp.

They were crying incessantly. Tension prevails as the kith and kin of the females are not allowed to meet them and journalists are kept in the dark. Around 30 military personnel guarding the hospital were not allowing the parents or community members to independently witness the state of the victims. The victims are treated by military doctors and nurses.

There is widespread fear of sexual exploitation and harassment inflicted on conscripted Tamil girls in the Sri Lankan military. Some reports indicate that the affected state of mind of the girls was due to sexual harassment inflicted on them in the night times by the occupying soldiers, exclusively Sinhalese. For more than two weeks, parents were not able to get in touch with their daughters and they were in shock to learn that the victims were admitted to the hospital. It was reported earlier that the victims were protesting against forced conscription to military services.  As of 2nd December, mobile phones have been barred inside the military camp where these girls were taken into.

On December 11, Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) issued a press release with a statement from the Women's Action Network (WAN) that Tamil women are widely coerced into joining the military. BBC correspondent reports, the 'Enlistment Letters' for these female recruits are in Sinhala only and says many girls were duped to join military threatening with consequences.

It is not the first time sexual violence against Tamil women has happened in Sri Lanka and the world at large has been kept 'silence'.

Please help these women and help to stop this inhuman abuse in 2012!

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards,
