இன்று மாலை 3.30 மணியளவில், கனடா ரொரன்டரோவில், உறை பனியினால் படர்ந்திருந்த, நீர்த்தேக்கம் ஒன்றின் மீது நடந்து சென்று கொண்டிருந்த இரு தமிழ் சிறுவர்கள், உறை பனி உடைந்ததால் உள்ளே விழுந்ததால் மரணமடைந்துள்ளனர்.

சம்பம் நடை பெற்றதை அடுத்து, ரொரன்ரோ அவசர சேவை நிலையத்துக்கு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. சுமார் 20 நிமிடங்களின் பின்னர் அவர்கள் வந்து ஒருவரை மீட்டெடுத்தனர். பின்னர் தொடர்ந்தும் மற்றையவரை தேடி கிட்டத்தட்ட 2 மணி நேரத்தின் பின்னே கண்டு பிடித்ததாக, சம்பவத்தை நேரடிய அறிந்தவர்கள் கூறினர்.

இரு சிறுவர்களும், 15, 11 வயதை உடையவர்கள் என அறியப்படுகின்றது. ரொன்ரோ காவல் துறையினர் இதுவரை பெயர்களை வெளியிடாததால் அவற்றை எம்மால் வெளியிட முடியவில்லை.

இவர்களின் மீட்பு பணியில் ஈடுபட்ட இரு தீயணைப்பு படைய வீரர்களும், பாதிப்படைந்துள்ளதாக ரொரொன்ரோ காவல் துறையினர் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

சம்பவத்தை நேரில் பார்த்த சிந்தையன் பாலசுப்பிர மணியம் கருத்து தெரிவிக்கையில்,

நாங்கள் எல்லோரும் போக வேண்டம், போக வேண்டாம் என்று கத்தினோம், ஆனால் திடீரென உறைபனி உடைந்து உள்ளே விழுந்தார் என்றார்.

ரொறன்ரோவில் சிறு குளம் ஒன்று கடும் குளிரின் காரணமாக அதன் மேற்பரப்பு உறைந்திருந்த நிலையில் அப்பகுதியால் சென்ற தமிழ் சிறுவர்களில் ஒருவரான கிசோபன் அழகேஸ்வரன் (வயது 15) அதன்மீது எறி விளையாடியபோது திடிரென நீரின் மேற்பரப்பில் உறைந்திருந்த பனி நொருங்கிதால் அச்சிறுவன் நீரில் மூழ்கித் தத்தளித்தான்.

அச்சிறுவன் நீரில் மூழ்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது, அவனுடன் கூடவந்த அவனது நண்பனான பிருந்தன் முரளிதரன் (வயது 11) உறைநிலையில் இருந்த நீரின் மேற்பரப்பால் நடந்து சென்று கிசோபன் நீரில் மூழ்காதவாறு அவனது கைப்பிடித்துக் கொண்டு நின்ற வேளை எதிர்பாராத விதமாக பிருந்தன் நின்றிருந்த பகுதியும் நெருங்கியதால் இரு சிறுவர்்களும் நீரில் மூழ்கதத தொடங்கினர்.

இதனையடுத்து அவர்களுடன் வந்த கிசோபனின் சகொதரனும்் எனைய சிறுவர்களும் வீதியால் சென்ற பெண் ஒருவரின் செல்லிடப் பேசியை வாங்கி அவசர சேவை க்கு அழைத்தையடுத்து அங்கு விரைந்த காவல்துறையினர் நால்வர் சிறுவர்களை மீட்கும் முயற்சியில் ஈடுபட மேலதிக காவல்துறையினரும், தீயணைப்புப் படையினர் மற்றும் முதலுதவிப் படையினரும் 45 நிமிட நேரப்போராட்டத்திற்குப் பின்னர் சிறுவர்களை மீட்டு உலங்குகுவானூர்தி மூலம் சிறுவர் மருதததுவமனைக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்தனர்.

எனினும் மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்்ப்பட்டு சில மணிநேரததில் பிருந்தன் உயிரிழந்துள்ளான். தொடர்ந்தும் ஆபத்தான நிலையில் கிசோபன் சிகிச்சை பெற்றுவருககிறான். இச்சிறுவர்களை மீட்கும் முயற்சியில் ஆரம்பம் முதல் ஈடுபட்ட காாவல்துறையினரும் நால்வரும் கடும் குளிரான நீரில் நீண்ட நேரம் நின்றதால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட நிலையில் மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிச்சை பெற்றுள்ளனர்.

இச்சம்பவத்தால் அப்பகுதி சோகத்தில் மூழ்கியுள்ளது.

[COLOMBO , SinhalaNet 2006.12.14 02:09PM] With the grief of losing their young son still fresh, the family of a boy who drowned in a partially frozen Scarborough pond is facing the prospect of being deported to Sri Lanka.

In court documents, the boy’s father Muralidaran Nadarajah, 45, claims to have been arrested and tortured by the Sri Lankan Army for 31-months according to Toronto.ctv.ca website on December 12.

Nadarajah says the army accused him of being a high-ranking officer within the Tamil Tiger terrorist organization.

The Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) seems to support the accusation in a report filed with the federal court.

That CSIS report alleges that Nadarajah was one of the Tamil Tigers’ top international leaders while living in Switzerland before coming to Canada.

"It has been determined that, while in Switzerland, (Nadarajah) orchestrated fundraising and propaganda activities in the support of the LTTE,’’ reads a 2005 court ruling that stayed Nadarajah’s deportation pending a risk assessment.

Court documents show Nadarajah left Switzerland after he had been charged, tried and acquitted of being a member of a criminal organization.

The CSIS report also alleges Nadarajah claimed refugee status in Canada in 1998 using a false name after crossing the border in Montreal.

A report entitled International Terrorism: The Threat to Canada, released by CSIS in May 2000, called Nadarajah a "top international leader of the LTTE.’’

Nadarajah denies being associated with the terrorist group.

"I am not a terrorist, I (was) never, ever involved in arms or any violent activities in my whole life," he told The Canadian Press`A0on`A0Tuesday.

Nadarajah claims he was "helping the people who are suffering in Sri Lanka," adding that it was for "education and promoting cultural activities."

The entire family is now fighting a deportation order that was issued after their claim for refugee status was denied.

The parents say that returning to Sri Lanka could mean the entire family would suffer serious harm.

They are also afraid their children will face forced recruitment by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), under fear of persecution and torture.

A judge has ordered a judicial review of the Nadarajah case.

While they wait, the family is preparing to bury 11-year-old son Brunthan Nadarajah.

Brunthan Nadarajah, 11, was hailed as a hero after he died trying to save a friend who had plunged through the thin ice of a Scarborough pond.

His friend, 15-year-old Kishoban Alakeswaran is in critical condition at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.

At about 3:15 p.m. Sunday both boys were on their way to a pick-up soccer game. The frozen pond was a popular short-cut to the soccer pitch.

The older boy plunged through the thin ice sheet that covered the pond. The younger boy tried to pull his friend from the water, only to break through himself.

After an agonizing search, rescuers managed to pull both boys from the icy water and rush them to hospital.

Brunthan did not survive. Paramedics managed to revive Alakeswaran, who is clinging to life at the Hospital for Sick Children.

A funeral for Brunthan is expected on Saturday.

Canada’s federal government added the LTTE to the Criminal Code list of terrorist groups in April of this year.

The LTTE’s stated goal is the formation of a separate state, called Tamil Eelam, on the island of Sri Lanka.

A 15-year-old boy who fell through pond ice near his northeast Toronto home with a friend eight days ago has died in hospital without ever regaining consciousness.

Kishoban Alakeswaran was throwing stones on a frozen pond near Morningside Ave. and Finch Ave. E. with his 11-year-old friend Brunthan Nadarajah when he went through the thin ice.

Brunthan drowned while trying to rescue Kishoban, who later remained unconscious in the Hospital for Sick Children while his parents and family kept a constant bedside vigil.

He was taken off life support early yesterday as his parents prayed.

Last night, stricken relatives and friends gathered at the home of Kishoban's parents.

"He was a very nice kid. Very independent," said cousin Nithja Varatharajan, 18, who described the teen as an extremely bright student in Grade 10 at Woburn Collegiate.

Friends and family said they could easily imagine him succeeding in a career that involved computers and science.

"All his marks were above 90 this term and his lowest mark was 90," the cousin said.

The oldest of three children, Kishoban and his family emigrated to Canada from Sri Lanka in 2000. His brother, 14, and 9-year-old sister both looked up to him, the cousin said. She said the family prayed, believing the critically injured teen would somehow pull through.

"Even when the doctors said they couldn't help him, his mother had faith and believed he'd come home, and now she's really devastated."

A funeral service is planned for Thursday.

Brunthan was buried Saturday in Highland Memorial Gardens on Don Mills Rd., with police officers involved in the rescue effort serving as pallbearers.

Brunthan's family, from Sri Lanka, faces deportation. Canadian security officials say his father, Muralidaran Nadarajah,is linked to the Tamil Tigers.
