ECONOMYNEXT – China will not allow outside influences to interfere in Sri Lanka internal concerns, visiting foreign minister Wang Yi had said at a meeting with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

“As Sri Lanka’s strategic partner China will continue to standby Sri Lanka’s interests,” Minister Yi was quoted as saying in a statement by President Rajapaksa’s office

“China stands for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

“We will not allow any outside influences to interfere with matters that are essentially internal concerns of Sri Lanka.”

President Rajapaksa had said Sri Lanka wanted to be economically strong to be independent.

“Sri Lanka is a small country. Fortunately or not, it is geographically placed in a most strategic location,” he had said.

“As a result, the country has to face many political challenges. The only way to overcome them is to be economically strong. The economic independence will ensure political independence.”

China is a top financiers of Sri Lanka’s government giving loans to build infrastructure. China is also investing directly in ports.

Minister Yi had said that during planned visit by President Rajapaksa, he would be able to meet parties that could help Sri Lanka in technology, tourism and infrastructure.

President Rajapaksa had said that he was an admirer of President Xi Jing Ping and that he had followed his speeches and statements closely. (Colombo/Jan14/2020)
