Sri Lanka says blast on bus near Colombo port

COLOMBO, May 24 (Reuters) - An explosion hit a bus in a commercial area near Sri Lanka's main port in the capital Colombo on Thursday, the military said, but there were no immediate details of any casualties.

"There is an explosion on a bus in the Fort area," said Navy spokesman Commander D.K.P. Dassanayake.

The incident came just hours after a flotilla of Tamil Tiger rebel boats attacked a navy detachment off the island's far northern Jaffna peninsula before dawn, killing several sailors.

கொழும்பு கோட்டை முதலாம் குறுக்குத் தெருவில் சென்று கொண்டிருந்த இராணுவ பேரூந்து மீது இன்று வியாழக்கிழமை இக்குண்டுத் தாக்குதல் நடத்தப்பட்டதாக படைத்தரப்பு தெரிவிக்கின்றது.

இத்தாக்குதலை உந்துருளியில் குண்டுகளைப் பொருத்தி வந்த நபர் ஒருவரே நடத்தியதாகவும் படைத்தரப்பு மேலும் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இச்சம்பவத்தில் காயமடைந்த ஐந்து பேர் கொழும்பு தேசிய மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும் அறியப்படுகின்றது.

A suspected Tamil Tiger suicide bomber has killed two soldiers and wounded five others on a military bus in Colombo.

The bus was attacked just outside the Sri Lankan capital's port, police said, adding that they believed a Tiger suicide bomber had carried out the attack.

"It is likely that the man rammed an explosives-packed motorcycle against the army bus," a police official said.

Hospital sources said that two soldiers were dead on arrival, while five more were wounded in the blast.

Only hours earlier, Tamil Tiger rebels attacked a strategic naval base in northern Sri Lanka, killing at least 35 sailors, a rebel spokesman told reporters.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) overran the naval facility at Delft, an islet off the Jaffna peninsula, under the cover of darkness, Tiger spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiriyan said.

"During a search operation, we found 35 bodies of Sri Lankan sailors and weapons," Ilanthiriyan said by telephone from the rebel-held Wanni region.

Four rebels were killed in the operation, the Tigers said.

The Sri Lankan military confirmed the rebel attack, but gave no further details.

Tamil rebels ambush navy base in Sri Lanka's north; bomb targets soldiers in capital

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Tamil rebels ambushed a navy camp in northern Sri Lanka and said they killed 35 sailors in the attack early Thursday, while a bomb blast near an army bus in the capital wounded four soldiers and a civilian, the government said.

Tamil Tiger rebels attacked the navy base at Delft in a flotilla of 15 boats, and navy sailors sank one of them in attempts to repulse the ambush, navy spokesman Commander D. K. P Dassanayake said.

But the rebels swiftly overran the base and later found the bodies of 35 sailors, rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan told The Associated Press by telephone. He said four insurgents also were killed in the assault.

"The fighting lasted only 20 minutes and we completely overran the camp," Ilanthirayan said, adding that the insurgents returned to their own base soon after the raid.

The military did not immediately have details of the casualties in the violence, and the rebels' death toll could not be independently verified. The military and rebels routinely deny and contradict each other's casualty tolls.

Later Thursday morning in the capital, Colombo, a bomb exploded near a bus carrying soldiers, an official at the Defense Ministry's information center said, speaking on condition of anonymity, citing ministry policy.

He said the bomb was fastened to a motorcycle parked by the roadside. Four soldiers and a civilian were wounded, he said.

The Tamil Tiger rebels have fought the government since 1983 to create a separate homeland for the island nation's minority ethnic Tamils, who have suffered decades of discrimination under the Sinhalese-dominated government.

Nearly 70,000 people have died in the conflict, including about 5,000 killed since December 2005, when violence flared despite a 2002 cease-fire that is now in tatters.

LTTE terrorist attack at Army bus - Colombo [updated]

LTTE terrorists detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), targeting a bus transporting army personnel in the first cross street in Colombo fort, on Thursday the 24th of May, at 08.55 a.m.

According to the available information a claymore mine fixed in a parked mortar bike was detonated using a remote device, the defence officials said.

Hospital sources said seven injured, including four army personnel and three civilians have been admitted to the national hospital in Colombo. Meanwhile, hospital sources further said that two injured are in critical condition.

COLOMBO, May 24 (Reuters) - Suspected Tamil Tigers targeted a military bus with a roadside bomb near the entrance to Sri Lanka's main port in the capital Colombo on Thursday, the military said, wounding seven people including four servicemen.

Bomb squad officers at the scene said a motorbike packed with explosives was parked by the side of the road and exploded as the military bus drove past. The windows of the vehicle were blown out.

However they said they did not believe it was a suicide attack, as military officials initially reported.

A Reuters witness at the scene saw two charred motorbikes on the ground near the bus, but said the bus appeared to be intact. He said he could see blood on the floor of the bus.

The Tigers denied any involvement in the blast.

The incident came just hours after Tiger boats attacked a navy detachment off the island's far northern Jaffna peninsula before dawn, killing several sailors.
