An island wide power failure is being experienced since early this morning.

Initial reports suggested the power failure was following systems fault at the Kelanithissa and Victoria power grid.

Sri Lanka sees major power failure

Jan 21, 2008 (LBO) -- Power supply to most parts of Sri Lanka failed as a transformer in a transmission line just outside the capital burst in the early hours of Monday, officials at the state power utility said.

A current transformer in the Kotugoda grid substation had burst tripping off the adjacent Biyagama substation which received power from the generation system in the Mahaweli river system setting off a chain reaction, a Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) official said.

However, some generators in the Mahaweli complex and systems in areas like Badulla remained energized, and engineers were quickly restoring power to the country.

Sri Lanka has experienced island-wide blackouts earlier.

The grid failed in the early hours of December 07 after a thermal generator tripped .

Power failed island-wide on May 10, 2007 and also on April 15.

வீரகேசரி இணையம் - இன்று காலை நாடு முழுவதும் மின் விநியோகம் தடைப்பட்டிருந்தது. கட்டுநாயக்க கொட்டகொட பகுதியிலுள்ள மின்மாற்றியொன்றின் இன்று அதிகாலை 6 மணியளவில் திடீரென வெடித்தததில் நாடு முழுவதிலும் ஒரு மணி நேர மின் தடை ஏற்பட்டதாக இலங்கை மின்சார சபை தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இந்த மின்மாற்றி வெடித்தத்திற்கான காரணம் இதுவரை கண்டறியப்படாத நிலையில், கட்டுநாயக்க பொலிஸார் மேலதிக விசாரணைகளை மேற்கொண்டு வருகின்றனர்.

இரவு நேரம் மின்சாரம் நிறுத்தினால் இந்தக் காரணம் சரி. பகல் நேரத்தில் நிற்பதற்கும் விமானம் பறப்பதற்கும் என்ன சம்பந்தம். மின்சாரம் நிறுத்துவதே, இலக்குகள் இனம் காணக் கூடாது என்பதற்குத் தானே.
