Hunger Strike to Protest Sri Lankan Genocide

A hunger strike will take place in Sydney's CBD, urging the Australian government to support calls for a cease-fire between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and State Armed Forces in Sri Lanka.

Organised by the Australian Tamil Students (ATS), a national coalition of tertiary students, the protest aims to bring light to the intolerable silence and lack of international condemnation to the unfolding genocide in Sri Lanka.

"Hundreds of Tamil civilians caught in the crossfire have already died and the thousands injured will die within days. Yet the world has remained silent. The Sri Lankan government needs to give safe passage for urgently needed medical supplies and food to reach the North," said ATS member Arunn Waran.

The campaign comes only days after the Sri Lankan military is said to have killed 300 Tamil civilians in an agreed "safety zone", where government ministers had earlier instructed people to take shelter, promising safe refuge.

The participants are calling on the Australian government to condemn the attacks on civilian populations and support calls for a ceasefire, as aid organisations and some other governments have.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says a quarter of a million are trapped within 250 sq km of intense combat with virtually NO medical care available [27/01/09]:

"Hospitals and ambulances have been hit by shelling and several aid workers have been injured while evacuating the wounded. The violence is preventing the International Committee of the Red Cross from operating in the region," said ICRC's Jacques de Maio, further adding that they did not receive security clearance to evacuate 200 critically wounded people, who now face certain death.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre [27/01/09]:

In an official statement said that his government condemned the ongoing war in Sri Lanka which has caused "unacceptable sufferings to the civilians," in the country.

Former U.S. Deputy Associate Attorney General Bruce Fein [24/01/09]:

"There can be no difference of opinion over the fact that what is happening to Tamils in Sri Lanka is a clear-cut case of genocide."

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier [22/01/09]:

"They have been completely cut off from international aid for more than 10 days…The most important thing now is to negotiate a ceasefire."

The 'Fast unto Action' campaign will commence on 28th of January on the corner of Pitt Street and Martin Place and will continue for several days.

Australian Tamils ‘Fast unto Action’ to call for a Ceasefire in Sri Lanka

Within our eyes

The future lies

Upon our shoulders

The weights of boulders

The fate of a nation

Lies within the cessation

Of this genocide

These political lies

So now we stand

Hand in hand

To face our destiny

To save our humanity

Our stomachs forbidden

Our resolve unforgiving

We will starve until you speak

the only answer that we seek..

Sydney support for Sri Lanka hunger strike

About 1000 people gathered at Martin Place in the city last night to show their support for the hunger strike aimed at raising awareness for the ongoing conflict in Sri Lanka.

Men, women and children of Sri Lankan background from across Sydney stood around the nine hunger strike participants for the final hours of their two-and-a-half day protest.

One of five fasting men, Arunn Warren, said the purpose of the protest was to raise awareness of the fighting between the Sri Lankan Government and the Tamils.

"We (want) the Australian Government to call for an immediate cease fire," said the 19-year-old from Greenacre in Sydney south west.

"We've exhausted all other avenues and lobbied politicians. What happened two days ago when the safety zone was bombed was unacceptable. 300 people died on the spot and 1000 were injured. I have no idea whether my family and friends are alive."

The United Nations evacuated hundreds of severely wounded civilians from behind rebel lines in Sri Lanka on Thursday as government troops fought to secure final victory over the Tamil Tigers, AFP reported on Friday.

Human rights bodies have called for immediate steps by both the Colombo government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to save up to 250,000 civilians trapped in the combat zone in the northeast of the island.

UN human rights chief Nai Pillay expressed her alarm.

"It seems there may have been very grave breaches of human rights by both sides in the conflict, and it is imperative that we find out more about what exactly has been going on," she told AFP, referring to reports that people had been prevented from fleeing or detained in special centres.

In Sydney on Friday night, Mr Warren said he had been living off water for the previous 58 hours.

The hunger strike began at midday on Wednesday and finished at midnight last night.

"Our bodies are really weak right now, I can't describe how I'm feeling."

Another one of the Tamil protesters was 25-year-old Sriharan Manogharan from Strathfied.

"I'm tired, but I'm pumped after seeing so much support from the Tamil community," Mr Manogharan said.

One of the many Tamils in Martin Place was Breamini Maniraj, 25 from Seven Hills, who had come after work to see the demonstration for a second time.

"We've got to get Australia to do something about what's happening," she said.

Sydney students on hunger strike over Sri Lanka fighting

University students are holding a hunger strike in Sydney's CBD to protest against fighting in Sri Lanka's north.

Nine students have been fasting in Martin Place for three days to pressure the Australian Government into condemning the violence.

More than 100 people have gathered to support the protest.

Sen Thuuran, 21, says despite the heat and hunger, he will not stop fasting until the Government acts.

"I have relatives over there but I'm not sure of the situation," he said.

"We don't know if they're alive, if they're ill, if they're injured. We're not sure of anything because there's no journalists, no reports to come out of that area."

Hunger strike protests Sri Lankan genocide

Kerry Smith, Sydney

31 January 2009

Nine young Tamil activists staged a hunger strike in Sydney’s CBD from January 28. They urged the Australian government to support calls for a ceasefire between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Sri Lankan military.

The protest, dubbed the “Fast unto Action” campaign, was organised by Australian Tamil Students (ATS), a national coalition of tertiary students. On January 30, 1000 people rallied in support of the hunger strikers.

A press release posted on the campaign’s blog, <http://fastuntoaction.wordpress.com/> stated that the protest aimed to bring light to the intolerable silence and lack of international condemnation to the unfolding genocide against the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

“Hundreds of Tamil civilians caught in the crossfire have already died and the thousands injured will die within days. Yet the world has remained silent. The Sri Lankan government needs to give safe passage for urgently needed medical supplies and food to reach the North”, said ATS member Arunn Waran.

The participants called on the Australian government to condemn the attacks on civilian populations and support calls for a ceasefire, as aid organisations and some other governments have.

They also invite people in solidarity with the Tamils to leave a comment on PM Kevin Rudd’s website <http://www.pm.gov.au/contact/index.cfm>.

The “Fast unto Action” hunger strike began on the corner of Pitt Street and Martin Place then relocated indoors as those fasting struggled in the heat.

On February 1, the Tamil activists stated on the blog that they had ended their campaign, “after having achieved what we had hoped to”.

According to the statement, “The Australian Government has not called for an ’immediate ceasefire’, however balls have been set in motion, with many having helped in the background … This blog site will continue for now as one that campaigns for ACTION.”
