Toronto Tamils take to the streets

Staff Reporters

Hundreds of placard-waving, Toronto-area Tamils continued an ongoing series of demonstrations downtown this evening.

The crowd stretched along the sidewalks of Front St. outside of the Metro Convention Centre, west of University Ave., chanting for justice in their homeland of Sri Lanka, where they say thousands have been killed in the ongoing civil war.

Mounted officers and crowd-control teams kept the protesters from blocking traffic as the crowd noisily but peacefully demonstrated throughout the early evening until about 7 p.m.

The demonstrations have been happening downtown every couple of weeks for the past two months, including some 40,000 people taking to the streets in late January.

"They have been really orderly with their message, "said Staff Sgt. Robert Brown. "They haven't given us any real concern, with the exception of their numbers being a bit hard to keep in order."

Tamil Protest Stops Traffic In Downtown Core

Monday February 16, 2009

CityNews.ca Staff

About 1,000 Tamil protesters blocked traffic into a downtown intersection Monday night where they had gathered to protest what they call genocide in their homeland.

The rally was organized by Tamil Canadians who are upset over Sri Lanka's crackdown on Tamil rebels. But as the crowd swelled, people spilled into the intersection of Front and John streets.

Officers from several divisions were called in to help control the peaceful crowd, which soon started to disperse.
