Yes and possibly more.

What we have is a case of Sinhala ideology and philosophy (based largely on Mahavamsa) translated into governance doctrine, strategies and tactics. If you look at other entrenched conflicts what you see, genocide, mass atrocities, land grabbing etc., are merely the strategies and tactics. But what we don't see and requires more rigorous analysis is the way underlying ideology and philosophy and hence the governance doctrine and structures/institutions. In Sri Lanka these ideologies and philosophies have resulted in structural discrimination. Mr.Sampanthan's comments were made in a parliament which itself is one part of that governance doctrine and a symbol of structural discrimination. So does the Supreme Court (if you look at their judgments you see that come through).

Unless and until the underlying factors are dealt with one could not find fault with all those who came before us and did their best in good faith to deliver freedom to Tamils, be in Thanthai Selva or Thalaivar. Each of these leaders is a product of the oppressive environment. Therefore their approach and strategies too were in direct response to that environment.

The question that we should ask ourselves (this applies to Mr. Sam too) is this? Are we doing the right things today so that our future generations could look back and build on the foundation we are crafting now?. If not that means we are merely spending time interpreting the actions of past leaders without learning lessons from good and bad strategies of the past to counter the enduring phenomenon in Sri Lanka, i.e. institutionalized oppression of minorities.

In summary, what is happening to Tamils today are not merely punitive measures which resulted purely due to Tamils taking up arms against the state. Rather this is what they always wanted to do.
