Eyewitness accounts of the incident indicated that the Sri Lankan security forces forced 100 Tamil civilians to remain inside buses, vans and cars using them as human shields during a battle with Tamil Tiger rebels. The police commandos crouched in the aisle of a bus during the attack. University Teachers for Human Rights said 30 civilians died in the incident, in the eastern district of Batticaloa.

 

1997 : A family bombed by Sri Lankan Army
Sri Lankan army shells targeting the Tamil village of Samanthiaru have killed an entire family. Residents of the Batticaloa village say indiscriminate artillery fire was launched from Vuvunathivu army camp creating mayhem and panic. The Sri Lankan army seems to have stepped up its bombing of Tamil residential villages in recent months. The unfortunate victims of this incident were a recently married couple and their first child. Their names were Krishanapillai Pavalasingam (25), Pama (25) and Jeevitha (1).

1986 : Ceasefire monitors strafed in Jaffna - 14 killed
On 4 January 1986, the Sri Lankan government appointed "Committee for Monitoring Cessation of Hostilities (CMCH) was to visit Jaffna city to hear evidence from Citizens Committees and individuals about alleged excesses by the security forces. The venue was to be Hotel Ashok located in the centre of Jaffna city.

 

1999 : Police fire kills one
A civilian was killed and another seriously wounded in the early hours of the morning today around 12.30 a.m. when the Sri Lankan Police at Eravur, 16 km. north of Batticaloa opened fire on a cart carrying a sick woman.

1997 : Tamil Man Shot In Front Of Wife And Children
Sri Lankan soldiers in army-occupied Meesalai in Thenmaradchy (Jaffna) have executed a Tamil man in front of his house. The troops stormed Nagalingam Varapragasam's home while his wife and six children were having dinner with him and without explanation hauled him into the street where they sprayed bullets on him . His wife too was assaulted when she tried to save her husband. Atrocities like this in Sri Lankan army-occupied areas have escalated to disturbing levels.

1997 : Commandos Rape Married Woman
Sri Lankan commandos of the Mansoor Tileworks army camp (Batticaloa) have raped and caused grievous injury to a Tamil woman carrying food to her husband. She was on her way to a paddy field where her husband was working when Sri Lankan STF troops intercepted her, raped her at gun-point then beat her viciously about the body. She is currently undergoing treatment at Batticaloa hospital.

 

2001 : Tamil political prisoner murdered
A Tamil political prisoner held at Kalutara prison was found stabbed to death on Thursday morning local police said. His body was found in a section of the prison where nearly 600 Tamil political detainees are held.

 

2001 : 152 arrested, 73 missing in Jaffna in 2000
Seventy three civilians were reported missing in the Jaffna peninsula from January to September in 2000 according to a report put out by the Human Rights Commission in Jaffna Thursday. The report said that 152 persons were arrested by the Sri Lankan security forces during this period. Four hundred and twenty one civilians were wounded and hundred and thirty one were killed in Jaffna last year due to the war, the report adds. Of these 156 were wounded and 26 were killed in the month of May alone according to the HRC report.

1985 : Sri Lankan troops killed 8 Tamils outside of a Vankalar Catholic church, near the town of Mannar. The parish priest was also killed as he attempted to open the chapel doors.Thereafter, soldiers broke into the chapel, reportedly killing two boys, ages 12 and 14, who had been living with the priest.

 

1994 : Two Sri Lanka Argentine made Puccaro planes flew into Jaffna on Wednesday 5 January at about 10.30 a.m. and bombed the village of Thavady. Three women and an infant were killed. Their bodies were torn and limbs and flesh were strewn all over. The deceased were S.T.Saras-wathy (aged 39), her niece Santhini (aged 23), Mrs.P.Selvaratnam (aged 65) and her grand daughter, M.Logiga (aged 3). They were all displaced person Thaiyiddy. Three houses were completely destroyed. Several other houses were damaged. The Thavady Sub Post Office and the office of the Grama Sevaka were also badly damaged. A school was in session within a hundred yards from where the bombs exploded. Fortunately no splinters hit the school and the children escaped without injuries.

2001 : The Sri Lankan government will not in anyway respond to the cease-fire unilaterally declared by the Liberation Tigers last month said Sri Lanka's Minister for Media, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, addressing a press conference in Colombo Friday to announce this week's cabinet decisions.
 

The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar had clearly stated the position of People's Alliance government regarding a cease-fire and the conditions in which it may consider one, according to Mr.Yapa.
 

The Sri Lankan government has stated that it would weigh the possibility of a cease-fire only if peace talks with the Liberation Tigers were to make substantial progress. The Tigers on the other hand say that there should be some manner of conflict de-escalation in the form of easing restrictions on civilian life in the Vanni to create a conducive climate of mutual trust for starting talks.

 

Mr.Yapa claimed that the Liberation Tigers had not apprised his government through a third party mediator such as Norway but had announced the cease-fire on their own through the media.

1999 : Disappearances continue in Jaffna

An official from the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna said that 201 people were arrested during the last year. In 67 of the cases the relatives of the detained were not given any confirmation of the arrest. These arrests were made by both the security forces and the Eelam People's Democratic Party. Four of the sixty have been confirmed dead, the official added. Meanwhile, Sinnathamby Thavarajah, from Nallur in Jaffna, has been reported missing since new years day. His relatives said that he went to Chavakachcheri and did not return home. They have made an entry at the HRC.

Muthulingam was a 14 year old while Thambirasa Kanthasamy was 32, both from Kithul. Family man Sabapathy Mylvaganam meanwhile disappeared during the operation and is believed by his family to have been murdered by Sinhala armed forces. Operation Rivijaya took place in Batticaloa and, like all other Sri Lankan military operations, showed no regard for the lives and property of the Tamil people. 16 Tamil houses were demolished and 100 Tamil families are reported displaced. Further civilian casualties are coming to light and will be documented when details are known.

 

2000 : BRUTAL GANG-RAPE AND MURDER OF YOUNG WOMAN BY SRI LANKA NAVY
On the evening of Tuesday 28th December 1999, Sarathambal Saravanbavananthakurukal, of a Hindu Brahmin family, was forcibly dragged from her home, in Pungudutivu, near Jaffna Peninsula, by Sri Lankan Navy soldiers. They then gang-raped and murdered her in cold blood. The body of the 29 year-old mother was found the following morning, under leaves, not far from her home near Kannaki Amman Temple.

2000 : Youth missing after arrest
A 22 year old youth arrested by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers from the Valaichenai Harbour View camp has been reported 'missing' according to his parents. SLA officials, when contacted by Batticaloa parliamentarian Mr.Pararajasingham, has denied the arrest of the youth.

Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunge's marathon television speech on January 3 was an attempt to kindle racist feelings in the country, said the leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe when briefing the press Thursday morning.

2000 : Detainee dies in prison violence
One of the 34 wounded Tamil detainees admitted to hospital following violence which erupted at 2 p.m. today at Kalutara Prison, about 40 km. south of Colombo has died, hospital sources said today.

The school was in session at the time of the attack. As the helicopter launched its attack, there was pandemonium - students and teachers ran to find shelter. Many of the school buildings were damaged. A bullet pierced the leg of a GCE (0/L) girl student named M.Rameenarani. She was taken to the Jaffna Hospital.

1998 : A Military Policeman (MP) of the Sri Lankan army was shot dead this morning in Vavuniya around 8.30 a.m. by a lone attacker.

 

1998 : LTTE Major Ananthan died when the LTTE ambushed an army jeep at Kodikamam (Jaffna).

1994 : Atchuvely Maha Vidyalayam attacked!
At about 11 a.m. on Friday, 7 January 1994, a Sri Lankan helicopter fired many rounds from 50 calibre guns on the Atchuvely Maha Vidyalayam. The school was in session at the time of the attack. As the helicopter launched its attack, there was pandemonium - students and teachers ran to find shelter. Many of the school buildings were damaged. A bullet pierced the leg of a GCE (0/L) girl student named M.Rameenarani. She was taken to the Jaffna Hospital.

 

1994 : Thondamanaru strafed by helicopters
At about 10 a.m. there were helicopter strafing at Thondamanru in the Vadamartchy area. The Veerakathipllai school was attacked. The children and teachers escaped without injuries but the school building was damaged. Heli attacks also took place in Navandil, Udupiddy, Valvettiturai, Putur and Avarangal villages on 7 January.

2000 : 1000 arrests in Colombo
Over one thousand Tamils were arrested during a massive search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Airforce and Police in Colombo and its suburbs after the enforcing of a curfew from midnight. The curfew was relaxed at 12.30 p.m., one-and-a-half hours earlier than announced.

1997 : Two rockets fired from a plan flying over Visvamadu, at midnight in to a thickly populated area killing 3 civilians and badly injuring 4 others.

1997 : Eight Sri Lankan soldiers died and many more were injured after a dawn raid by the LTTE on six military checkpoints in the Tamil area of Thanthrimalai (Mannar district). The six military posts, which stretched over a distance of 300 metres, were targeted simultaneously. There were no LTTE casualties and a significant amount of arms and ammunition was captured.

 

1998 : LTTE forces ambushed a Sinhalese army patrol unit in Valaichchenai (Batticaloa) at 5:40 AM today killing 4 soldiers while the rest fled. The soldiers were patrolling from the Valaichchenai Harbour army camp to Puthukudiyiruppu army camp when the attack happened. A significant quantity of arms and ammunition were captured by the LTTE. There were no LTTE casualties. Meanwhile, last Saturday LTTE forces attacked a group of heavily armed homeguards (armed by the Sri Lankan government) in Sammanthurai (Amparai) at 9:30 PM, killing one. Also in Amparai, LTTE forces Wednesday ambushed paramilitary Sinhalese police in Thirukovil at 8:40 AM killing one.

1997 : "March For Medicine" - Huge Vanni Protests
Many thousands of Tamils across Vanni district have handed over petitions to OXFAM, MSF, CARE and ICRC after mass protests yesterday. The demonstrations, massively attended in Mankulam, Mallavi, Thunnukai, Pandiankulam and other neighbouring areas, was the Tamil people's way of condemning Sri Lanka's food and medicine ban to their areas. Sri Lanka at present has in place a strict block on essential medical items which stops Tamils obtaining even the pain-killer Panadol. Many leading members of the Vanni community at the demo condemned Sri Lanka's policy saying it used medicine as a weapon of war to cripple the Tamil people not living under its own areas of occupation. Yesterday's protest saw school-children, teachers, businessmen, doctors and even some hospital patients take to the streets and issue an appeal to the president, opposition leader and health minister to withdraw their inhuman policy against the Tamil people.

140 LTTE fighters lost their lives in the heavy battle which began in the early hours of Thursday morning. The LTTE's strategic objective was to nullify Sri Lanka's fire-power in this region by capturing or destroying armaments. Much of the weaponry at these bases had been used systematically by Sri Lanka to launch indiscriminate bombing raids on residential Tamil villages. The LTTE destroyed 11 long-range artillery pieces and several more armouries after its commando units penetrated Sri Lankan forward defence lines extending 10 kilometres. Nine of the artillery pieces demolished were size 122mm, while the other two were 130mm. Several ammunition dumps were also wiped out.

In addition, vast quantities of arms were captured including three 120mm mortars, three 50-calibre machine guns and hundreds of automatic guns, along with ample amounts of mortar shells and ammunition. The LTTE withdrew soon after the mission was successfully completed. Earlier today, the LTTE made arrangements for 29 recovered bodies of Sri Lankan soldiers to be handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in accordance with international humanitarian law procedures. Photo evidents of this attack were appeared on the newspapers in Tamil Eelam on the following day!

Students of National College of Education at Poonthoddam in Vavuniya demonstrated in the northern town Wednesday, protesting against the abduction of one of their colleagues by gunmen suspected to be from a militia working with the Sri Lankan army around 9 p.m.Tuesday. Somasundaram Mukunthan, a third-year student of the college, was abducted from his home at Pandaariakulam, a suburb of Vavuniya town, by gunmen men who had come in an auto-rikshaw, student sources said.

 

2001 : Massive demonstration in Jaffna - 'Pongu Thamil'
More than ten thousand people in Jaffna comprising university students, high-school students, residents and representatives and members of civil organisations demonstrated Wednesday, urging the Sri Lankan government to reciprocate the Liberation Tigers unilateral ceasefire and negotiate with the movement. Thirty two civilians were killed due to the actions of the Sri Lankan security forces while twelve were reported missing in Mannar from January to December 2000 according to statistics released Saturday by the Citizens’ Committee for the district. 1997 :The LTTE has handed over the bodies of 3 Sri Lankan sailors killed in Thursday's LTTE sea-attack on a navy patrol boat in the waters off Mandaitivu and Gurnagar (close to Jaffna town). The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) received the bodies.

 

1997 : A Sri Lankan unmanned spy plane has crashed in Tamil Vanni territory. The aircraft which was equipped with the latest radar and photo technology came down in Pooneryn due to apparent mechanical failure. It had been used ostensibly to gather military information but Sri Lankan forces have nevertheless routinely bombed civilian locations in the vicinity.

1997 : Over 23 Sri Lankan military and police personnel were killed and 20 others severely injured when the LTTE this morning attacked a mini-camp in Kepittikolawa (Anuradhapura district). The LTTE was in complete control of the Kalugaswewe camp for more than 90 minutes during which time they captured a large haul of arms and ammunition after which the whole camp was destroyed. The captured items include many light machine guns, rifles, shells and mortars. Six LTTE fighters died in the attack.
