Prabhakaran's combatants head for Thoppigala

Another round of internecine battle feared in East

A group of over 100 cadres of Prabhakaran's elite fighting unit has been sent to the East as reinforcement in response to calls from the combatants of the Prabhakran faction who suffered heavy losses in confrontation with the Karuna faction on Sunday.

These combatants would head for the Toppigala jungle, where there is a heavy formation of Karuna's fighting units, sources said.

If they managed to reach the jungles, there would be a blood bath again, sources added.

The Wanni leadership had sought permission from the Navy and the SLMM to ferry these combatants across to the Verugal area under the false pretext that they were returning to the East after leave.

The Prabhakaran faction had employed a similar ruse to bring combatants to the East before launching an attack on the Karuna faction a few months ago. And the Karuna faction accused the SLMM of promoting war in the East by allowing Prabhakaran's men to enter the eastern sector.

The Navy, sources said, had received instructions from the top to escort these LTTE cadres, who were coming from Mullativu.

Karuna Amman ready to talk with Govt.

Karuna Amman says he has decided to start talks with the Government against the atrocities committed against innocent people by Velupillai Prabhakaran.

He will never accept discussion held with Velupillai Prabhakaran but would be willing to hold peace talks with the Government as he was fighting for the rights of the Tamil people in the Eastern Province.

Karuna Amman said he would inform his decision to the Government soon and will start peace talks accordingly.

Sri Lanka to probe Tamil rebel accusations against gov'nt media

The Sri Lankan government that hopes to recommence stalled direct peace negotiations with the Tamil Tiger rebels said on Thursday they would look into rebel accusations of carrying out a vicious campaign against them.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels had complained to the Norwegian Ambassador to Sri Lanka that the state-owned radio had carried a program to discredit the rebels by promoting a breakaway commander of the LTTE.

Government spokesman and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that the internal clashes within the LTTE was not a matter for the government to draw attention to as it was committed to a negotiated settlement to end the two decades of ethnic conflict.

LTTE hints at resumption of hostilities

Colombo, June 17

Frustrated with the shifting stand of the Sri Lankan Government on the issue of discussing the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) for the Tamil North Eastern Province (NEP), and the undercover attempts to drive a wedge between Eastern and Northern Tamils, the LTTE has hinted that it may have to resume hostilities.

In an interview to the Sudar Oli daily on Thursday, the LTTE's political wing leader, SP Tamilselvan, said that Prabhakaran was determined to realise the aspirations of the Tamil people.

He had taken some steps to achieve this goal, (meaning agreeing to hold peace talks with Government). But if these efforts did not bear fruit, Prabhakaran would at the appropriate time take the right decision.

In political circles the threat to take the "right decision" is interpreted as a threat to return to war or terrorism. In fact, Tamil MPs who had met Tamilselvan recently, say that the impression they got was that some kind of a military action or a bomb blast could be on the cards.

Some defence experts fear that a high profile military person or military camp could be targeted.

"The LTTE will not intend to start a full scale war, but they will indicate through limited violent action, their displeasure with the Government's actions, especially the role of the armed forces in the Eastern district of Batticaloa," a Tamil MP told Hindustan Times.

"The attack will be like a wake up call," said a leading military analyst.

"The LTTE will leave its visiting card behind, by doing this," said a Tamil MP.

The LTTE is angry with President Chandrika Kumaratunga for reneging on an undertaking to take up the ISGA for discussions first before going on to the core political issues related to a long term, final settlement.

She had told 20 Tamil MPs that she would discuss the ISGA first. But within a day or two, she touted a different line altogether.

"There had been no agreement on the talks agenda", she said in a national TV address.

The LTTE, on the other hand, is adamant about putting the ISGA in place first before starting talks on the "core" constitutional issues.

Its argument is that priority must be given to economic rehabilitation, and for that the ISGA must be set up immediately.

The LTTE is blaming Sri Lankan armed forces for the killings in the East, including the killing of senior journalist A Nadesan of Virakesari.

The armed forces are trying to portray it as the work of the henchmen of the LTTE renegade Col Karuna. But the LTTE says that Karuna has been neutralised and the work is that of Tamil groups aligned with the army.

The LTTE also alleges that the Sri Lankan state is using the Karuna factor to drive a wedge between the Tamils of the East from those of the North. This has made the LTTE livid.

The LTTE leaders also point out that the state media have an understanding with the Tamil Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) of London, which is run by the anti-LTTE elements and supporters of Karuna.

State media broadcasts anti-LTTE and pro-Karuna material sent by the TBC.

Karuna's force clashes with LTTE

COLOMBO, JUNE 18. A fresh bout of uncertainty has hit Sri Lanka's fragile eastern Batticaloa district following reports of a clash between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and fighters led by its former special commander, V. Muralitharan (`Col. Karuna) earlier this week.

The details of the clash, which, according to defence sources, took place in the Thoppigala jungles of rebel-held Batticaloa, are not available. The exact number of those killed is also not known, with contradictory reports reaching the Government, placing the figure between three and 15.

Security sources told The Hindu that the fighting took place when Karuna's group "either ambushed or attacked'' some LTTE vehicles which had crossed into rebel-held territory sometime between the midnight of Sunday (June 12) and early morning Monday.

One security source placed the toll at 15 killed, of whom "12 or 13'' are said to be from the LTTE and the remaining from Karuna's fighters.

Another report placed the number of dead in the fighting at "just two or three.'' According to information available with the security forces, "no senior leader'' was reported killed in the ambush.

Neither the LTTE, nor Karuna's supporters could be reached for comment.

A senior defence official said while there was "some loss of life, we have no clear idea'' as the incident was within LTTE-held Batticaloa.

LTTE REITERATES ITS CHARGES THAT RENEGADE LEADER KARUNA IS SHELTERED BY ARMY AND WARNS OF SERIOUS REPERCUSSIONS

June 20, 02.45 AM:The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) reiterated its charge that the Sri Lanka Army was sheltering their renegade former military commander Col. Karuna Amman to use him against the Tamil separatist group.

The LTTE operated news website the Tamil Net quoting their Ampara-Batticaloa Special commander Ramesh at a press conference at Thenagam in Kokkadicholai in the internecine war torn Eastern Province between the Wanni forces of Prabhakaran and LTTE renegade forces of Eastern Province led by Karuna reportedly said, "If the Sri Lanka government tries to wage war against us making use of Karuna, there will be serious repercussions and we will not hesitate to take appropriate action,"

But sources other than LTTE in the Eastern Province said, that the news item was a plant by the LTTE to confuse the general public and Ramesh was in the custody of the Karuna Amman forces and he possibly could not hold a press conference.

The website , who generally publishes photo of all their press conferences somehow published only a file photo of the of Ramesh.

The Sri Lanka Army has repeatedly denied that they were involved with the renegade Tamil leader Karuna and the government's cabinet spokesman Mangala Samaraweera recently said they treated the troubles between Karuna and Prabhakaran as internal conflict of the Tamil separatist group.

Meanwhile, the Jathika Hela Urumaya who are acting as a partner of the united opposition group that includes United National Party and the proxy party of the Tamil Tigers, the Tamil National Alliance has accused the Sri Lanka government of not supporting Col. Karuna in this internal conflict.

Ramesh, the Eastern commander of the LTTE allegedly promised to provide what he claimed as incriminating evidence through four senior women cadres who were allegedly with Karuna and now re-joined the Wanni forces of Prabhakaran, according to the LTTE website..

Ramesh, accordingly, did not reveal the names of the alleged former cadres of Karuna and there was no possibility for the journalists to independently check whether they belonged to the Karuna faction or not.

He reportedly accused journalists and foreign news agencies of spreading falsehoods about the internecine war between their forces and the forces of Karuna according to the news report.

Ramesh, at the press conference also allegedly promised to bring the killings of the LTTE cadres to a halt very soon, claiming that they occurred outside the LTTE controlled areas. This was an admission on behalf of the LTTE that cadres had been killed by Karuna forces. But LTTE armed military cadres are not allowed outside the LTTE controlled areas under the ceasefire agreement signed between Sri Lanka and the LTTE.

The LTTE website quoted UNP spokesman G.L. Peiris in a separate items as saying that the LTTE was losing its confidence in the Sri Lanka government headed by President Chandrika Kumaratunga in the peace process

"SLA is giving shelter to Karuna"- Ramesh

"We have confirmed reports that the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) is giving shelter to Karuna and that the Sri Lanka military is trying to use him against the Liberation Tigers," said Special LTTE Commander for Batticaloa- Ampara, Col.Ramesh speaking to reporters at a press conference held in Thenagam in Kokkadicholai Saturday evening.

"If the Sri Lanka government tries to wage war against us making use of Karuna, there will be serious repercussions and we will not hesitate to take appropriate action," he said.

Col.Ramesh said that four senior women cadres including the military and political wing leaders who were with Karuna have re-joined the LTTE early this week.

He said that these cadres will very soon disclose details about Karuna's action when these cadres address the reporters soon in a press conference.

He said the Sinhala media in the South and some English media including foreign agencies with Sinhala reporters, were spreading distorted information about the LTTE during the days of war. Even during time of peace they are continuing to do the same thing. Some Sri Lanka military personnel still do not want to see the dawn of peace, Ramesh added.

"They think by doing so they could create divisions among our people. But the people have already identified the sections of the media who are spreading these news. Our people have become politically savvy to filter the facts from propaganda, he said.

He said the LTTE is functioning under an able and experienced leadership and is marching forward in a truthful and committed path towards attaining a fair and just solution to the Tamil liberation struggle.

Ramesh added that although certain incidents have taken place in the cleared areas, including shooting death of members of the LTTE, these incidents will be brought to a halt very soon.
