LTTE Defence Council discusses military situation

Sri Lanka Army troopers, engaged in a new offensive, have moved north of Mankerni into Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) controlled area in an offensive drive towards Panichchankerni, according to Tigers. "The Sri Lankan offensive has disregarded the assurances of ceasing all violence acts and the call by the International Community for talks," LTTE's Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan said. The Tigers have called on the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission to ensure monitoring access to the border areas where Sri Lankan forces were engaged in offensive acts. The Defence Council of the LTTE was summoned to discusss the current development, he further said.

"The defence council of the LTTE forces has been summoned. The future course of action would depend on the outcome of the meeting," Mr. Ilanthirayan further said.

"If the monitors did not ensure monitoring access to disputed areas such as Muhamalai in the North, Vaharai in the East, and elsewhere, there is a real danger of escalation of military hostilities," the military spokesman of the Tigers warned.

All the three armed forces of the Sri Lanka Army were engaged in the offensive move Friday morning when Sri Lankan troops inside the LTTE controlled area in an attempt to capture the village of Panichchankerni, LTTE's spokesman said.

There were civilian casualties as the bombs fell on civilian settlements, according to residents who have fled to Vaharai across the Panichchankerni bridge in LTTE controlled area.

A large number of SLA troops had entered the area early in the morning, civilian sources said. The civilians, expressing fear of escalation of violence, said the Sri Lankan troops were seen 5 km inside the LTTE territory.

They said the fighting was going on in Kovilkudiyiruppu village. Fleeing civilians had seen SLA troopers advancing through Sallithivu, they further said.

Meanwhile, civilian sources in Valaichenai, north of Batticaloa, said that the SLA troopers were seen transporting dead bodies of the soldiers in tractors towards Valaichenai.

வாகரை வலிந்த தாக்குதலையடுத்து தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் பாதுகாப்பு சபை அவசரமாக நேற்று வெள்ளிக்கிழமை கூட்டப்பட்டது. இக்கூட்டத்துக்குப் பின்னர் தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் நிலைப்பாட்டை விளக்கும் கடிதத்தை தமிழீழ அரசியல்துறை பொறுப்பாளர் சு.ப. தமிழ்ச்செல்வன் அனுப்பி வைத்துள்ளதாக செய்திகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

அக்கடிதத்தில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள விடயங்கள் உத்தியோகப்பூர்வமாக வெளியிடப்படவில்லை.

இருப்பினும் "சிறிலங்கா இராணுவம் தனது நடவடிக்கைகளை நிறுத்தாவிட்டால் பேச்சுக்கள் தொடர்பான எமது நிலையை மறுபரிசீலனை செய்து எதிர்பாராத ஒரு முடிவை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டிய நிலைக்குத் தள்ளப்படுவோம்" என்று அக்கடிதத்தில் சு.ப. தமிழ்ச்செல்வன் தெரிவித்திருப்பதாக ரொய்ட்டர்ஸ் செய்தி நிறுவனம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

தாக்குதல்கள் தொடர்ந்தால் யுத்த நிறுத்தத்திலிருந்து விலகுவோம் என்று விடுதலைப் புலிகள் எச்சரித்துள்ள நிலையிலும் சிறிலங்கா இராணுவமோ பதில் தாக்குதல் நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொள்ள தங்களுக்கு உரிமை என்று கூறி வருவதாகவும் ரொய்ட்டர்ஸ் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.
