The English summary below is his own version. / இந்த விரிவான தமிழ் கட்டுரை, எனது மறைந்த நண்பர், பொறியியலாளர் திரு. கந்தையா ஈஸ்வரன் எழுதிய முடிக்கப்படாத "இலங்கை வரலாறு" என்ற புத்தகத்தை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டது. கீழே உள்ள ஆங்கிலச் சுருக்கம் அவரது சொந்தப் பதிப்பாகும்.]

பின்னர் மணிபல்லவம் தீவில் தீவ திலகை என்ற பெண்ணை மணிமேகலை சந்திக்க நேர்ந்தது. இந்த தீவ திலகை, சம்மன குட்டத்தில் [Sammana Kutta / சமந்தகம் என்ற மலை உச்சியின் மேல்] புத்தரின் பாதங்களை வணங்கி, புத்தர் இருக்கையின் காவலில் இருந்தார். மேற்கண்ட விவரிப்பு மன்னிமேகலை காவியத்தின் 11வது காண்டத்தில் 20 முதல் 30 வரையிலான பாடல்களில் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இங்கு, "சம்மன குட்டா" ["Sammana Kutta" ] என்ற வார்த்தையை பாளி மொழியில் இரண்டாக்கப் பிரிக்கலாம், அங்கு "சம்மன" என்பது ஒரு துறவி அல்லது துறவியைக் குறிக்கிறது, மேலும் "குட்டா" என்பது சிகரம் அல்லது மலை என்று பொருள்படும். எனவே, "சம்மன குட்டா" என்பதை "துறவியின் மலை" அல்லது "துறவியின் சிகரம்" என்று விளக்கலாம், இது மலைப்பாங்கான அல்லது காட்டுப் பகுதிகளில் தியானம் மற்றும் கற்பிப்பதற்காக வசிக்கும் துறவிகளின் பாரம்பரியத்துடன் ஒத்துப்போகிறது.

தீவ திலகை என்பெயர் இதுகேள்:"
பெருமை பொருந்திய, புகழ் பெற்ற, இப் பெரும் பீடிகையால் என் முற்பிறப்பினை [என் பழைய பிறப்பைப்] பற்றித் தெரிந்து கொண்டேன். இது நான் அடைந்த பயன். பூங்கொடியே நீ யார் என்பதைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளலாமா?” என மணிமேலை கேட்டாள்.
மணிமேகலை தனது முற்பிற்பினை அறிந்ததை தீவதிலகை அறிந்தாள். நல்ல முறையில் சில செய்திகளைக் கூறலானாள். “இந்த மணிபல்லவத் தீவின் அருகில் இரத்தினத் தீவகம் உள்ளது. அதில் உள்ள சமந்தகம் என்ற மலை உச்சியின் மேல், தன்னைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களைப் பிறவிக் கடலில் இருந்து கரை சேர்க்கும் புத்தரின் பாத பீடிகை உள்ளது. (சமந்தகம் என்பது இலங்கையில் உள்ள சிவனொளி பாதமலை) அதனை வலம் செய்து இங்கு வந்தேன். குற்றிமின்றிக் காட்சி தரும் இந்தப் பாத பீடத்தை இந்திரனின் ஆணையால் காவல் செய்து வருகிறேன். என் பெயர் தீவதிலகை” என்று கூறினாள் என்கிறது.
இந்தக் காவியத்தின்படி, கி.பி இரண்டாம் நூற்றாண்டில் தமிழ் மக்கள் புத்த மதத்தைப் பின்பற்றினர். சம்மன மலையின் உச்சியில் புத்தரின் பாதச் சுவடு இருப்பதை அவர்கள் அறிந்திருந்தனர். வட இந்தியாவில் பன்னிரண்டு ஆண்டு பஞ்சத்தின் போது சமண மதம் (Jainism) கி.மு மூன்றாம் நூற்றாண்டில் தமிழ்நாட்டிற்கு வந்தது. மௌரிய வம்சத்தின் நிறுவனர் சந்திர குப்த மௌரியரும் [The founder of the Maurya dynasty, Chandragupta Maurya / reigned 320 BCE – 298 BCE] தனது மகன் பிந்துசாரனுக்கு [Bindusara] ஆட்சியைக் கொடுத்துவிட்டு தெற்கே ஓய்வு பெற்றார். அதைத் தொடர்ந்து புத்த மதம் உடனடியாகத் தமிழ் நாட்டிற்கு வந்தது. வி.ஏ. ஸ்மித் வலியுறுத்தியது போல், புத்த மதம் உண்மையில் தமிழ் நாட்டிலிருந்து இலங்கைக்கு வந்திருக்க வேண்டும். 'The Early History of India - Vincent A. Smith, Third edition, 1914' and 'Asoka, the Buddhist Emperor of India. By Vincent A. Smith, Third edition, 1919'. என்ற நூல்களைப் பார்க்கவும்.
இன்று காணப்படும் மன்னார் வளைகுடா, தெற்கு தமிழ்நாடு மற்றும் இலங்கையின் தென் மேற்குப் பகுதியில் உள்ள கடல்பகுதி, பழங்காலத்தில் மலைகள், ஆறுகள் மற்றும் பரந்த நிலப்பகுதியாக இருந்திருக்கலாம். கன்னியாகுமரி முதல் இலங்கையின் தென்பகுதி வரை ஒரு தொடர்ந்த நிலப்பகுதியாக இருந்திருக்க வாய்ப்புண்டு.
ஒரு நேரத்தில், இயற்கையின் மிகப் பெரிய மாறுபாடாக, நிலச்சரிவு அல்லது கடுமையான நிலக் கவிழ்ச்சி ஏற்பட்டது. இதன் விளைவாக மலைகள் மற்றும் சுற்றியுள்ள நிலப்பகுதிகள் கடலுக்குள் ஆழமாக கவிழ்ந்து மூழ்கியிருக்கும். இதனால் இன்றைய மன்னார் வளைகுடாவின் ஆழமான கடல்தொகுப்பு உருவானது.
பண்டைய தமிழர்களும் சிங்களர்களும் பெரும் கடல் வெள்ளம் பற்றிய நினைவுகளை தலைமுறை தோறும் கொண்டுள்ளனர். இதனால் இந்த பெரும் பேரழிவு மிகப் பழமையானது அல்ல, சுமார் 5000 ஆண்டுகளுக்குள் ஏற்பட்டிருக்க வாய்ப்புள்ளது. இது 2004ஆம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் மாதத்தில் ஏற்பட்ட சுனாமி போன்ற ஒரு பெரும் இயற்கை பேரழிவாக இருந்திருக்கலாம்.

Then Mannimeghalai happened to meet a lady named Theeva-Thilagai in the island Mannipallavam. This Theeva-Thilagai, having worshiped the Buddha’s feet on the Sammana Kutta, was in guard of the Buddha Seat. The above narrative is given in the verses 20 to 30 in the Canto 11 of the Epic Mannimeghalai.

The translation in brief: Quote ‘There on the high peak of the hill Samantakuta there are the footprints of the Buddha. Having offered worship at the footprints I came to this island long ago. Since then I have remained here keeping guard over this " Dharma-seat" under the orders of Indra. My name is Tiva-Tilakai (Dvipa Tilaka). People following the Dharma of the Buddha strictly, offering worship to this "Buddha’s seat" will gain knowledge of their previous birth, knowing their past as a result of this worship’. Unquote
Tamil people were following of the Buddhist faith as per this epic around the second century A. D. They were aware of the Buddha’s foot print on the top of the Sammana hill’.
The Samanna religion, (Jainism), came to Tamil country about third century B. C. during a twelve year famine in north India. The founder of the Maurya dynasty, Chandragupta Maurya, too retired to South, after giving the reign to his son Bindusara. The Buddhism followed suit immediately after to the Tamil country. The Buddhism must have really come to Lanka from Tamil country, as asserted by V. A. Smith. See References 15 and 21.
The present day Gulf of Mannar between the southern Tamil Nadu and south-west coast of Sri Lanka must been a land with hills, and rivers around it. The dotted line connecting Cape Commorin (Kannnya-Kumari) to the southern tip of Sri Lanka must have been the extent of land. A slope stability failure must have taken place in which the hills and adjoining lands plunged deep into the ocean as shown by the two arrows.
The picture below is a rendering showing the bathymetric contours of the Gulf Mannar in a continuous seascape. The memories of the Tamils and the Sinhalese about an ancient sea deluge have not faded. Therefore the deluge, the slope stability failure, must have happened not very long ago. The Biblical flood, Noachic flood, as per the introductory page XXXVIII of the Reference 42 is about 3044 B. C. This slope stability failure too must have occurred within the last 5000 years, or could even be recent. The effect must have been colossal and very destructive, similar to the Tsunami which occurred during the Christmas time of the year 2004
