மனித நடமாட்டமற்ற தீவில் புதைக்கப்படும் உடல்கள்

கொரோன வைரஸ் காரணமாக உயிரிழப்பவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை அச்சம் தரும் விதத்தில் அதிகரித்துள்ளதை தொடர்ந்து உயிரிழந்தவர்களின் உடல்களை ஹார்ட் ஐலன்ட் என்ற பகுதியில் புதைக்கும் நடவடிக்கைகளை நியுயோர்க் அதிகாரிகள் மேற்கொண்டுள்ளனர்.

தொழிலாளர்களை பயன்படுத்தி இந்த உடல்களை புதைக்கும் நடவடிக்கைகளை அதிகாரிகள் முன்னெடுத்துள்ளனர்.

19 ம் நூற்றாண்டு முதல் உறவினர்கள் எவருமற்ற அனாதைகளின் உடல்களை இந்த தீவிலேயே அதிகாரிகள் புதை;து வந்துள்ளனர்.

வழமையாக வாரத்திற்கு 25 உடல்கள் இந்த தீவில் புதைக்கப்படும் என தெரிவித்துள்ள ரொய்ட்டர் சிறைக்கைதிகளிற்கு சிறிய கூலியை வழங்கி இந்த நடவடிக்கை முன்னெடுக்கப்படுவது வழமை எனவும் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளது. 

இந்த தீவிற்கு படகு மூலமே செல்ல முடியும் என ரொய்ட்டர் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளது.

எனினும் கொரோனா வைரஸ் நியுயோர்க்கை தாக்க தொடங்கிய பின்னர் இங்கு எடுத்து வரப்படும் உடல்களின் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரித்துள்ளது,என தெரிவித்துள்ள ரொய்ட்டர், நாளாந்தம் 25 உடல்கள் எடுத்து வரப்படுவதாக உடல்கள் புதைக்கப்படுவதை கண்காணிக்கும் சீர்திருத்த திணைக்களத்தின் அதிகாரியொருவர் குறிப்பிட்டார் என செய்தி வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

ஐந்து நாட்களும் உடல்கள் புதைக்கப்படுகின்றன என அந்த அதிகாரி தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

உடல்களை மூடுவதற்கான பைகளில் அவற்றை சுற்றிய பின்னர் பிரேதப்பெட்டியில் வைத்து அவற்றை புதைக்கின்றனர் என ரொய்;ட்டர் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இறந்தவர்களின் உடல்கள் பெட்டியில் எழுதப்படுகின்றன,வெட்டப்பட்ட புதைகுழிகளில் பிரேதப்பெட்டிகள் வைக்கப்படுகின்றன என ரொய்ட்டர் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

சமூக தனிமைப்படுத்தலிற்காகவும் பாதுகாப்பு காரணங்களிற்காகவும் சிறைக்கைதிகளை நாங்கள் பயன்படுத்தவில்லை என அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

சுமார் 25 உடல்களுடன் குளிரூட்டப்பட்ட வாகனத்தை சுமந்தபடி பெரிய படகொன்று வருவதை பார்த்ததாக ரொய்ட்டர் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

Images have emerged of coffins being buried in a mass grave in New York City, as the death toll from the coronavirus continues to rise.

Workers in hazmat outfits were seen stacking wooden coffins in deep trenches in Hart Island.

Officials say burials are being ramped up at site, which has long been used for people with no next-of-kin or families who cannot afford a funeral.

New York state now has more coronavirus cases than any single country.

The state's confirmed caseload of Covid-19 is nearly 162,000, of whom 7,844 have died.

Spain has recorded about 157,000 cases and Italy 143,600, while China, where the virus emerged last year, has nearly 83,000 cases.

The US as a whole has recorded 467,000 cases and about 16,700 deaths. Globally there are 1.6 million cases and 97,000 deaths.

The drone footage comes from Hart Island, off the Bronx in Long Island Sound, which has been used for more than 150 years by city officials as a mass burial site for those with no next-of-kin, or families who cannot afford funerals.

Normally, about 25 bodies a week are interred on the island, according to the Associated Press news agency.

But burial operations have increased from one day a week to five days a week, with around 24 burials each day, said Department of Correction spokesman Jason Kersten.

Prisoners from Rikers Island, the city's main jail complex, usually do the job, but the rising workload has recently been taken over by contractors.

It is not clear how many of the dead have no next-of-kin or could not afford a funeral. However, the city has cut the amount of time it will hold unclaimed remains amid pressure on morgue space.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio indicated earlier this week that "temporary burials" might be necessary until the crisis had passed. 

"Obviously the place we have used historically is Hart Island," he said.

A city upended

The coronavirus has changed everything about life, and now it's upending the rituals of death.

New Yorkers have been shocked by the grim scenes: ambulances constantly blaring down eerily deserted streets, body bags being forklifted into refrigerated trucks outside hospitals and now new trenches being dug on Hart's Island for possible mass burials.

The remote cemetery, accessible only by boat, is a place regarded historically with sorrow because of its mass graves with no tombstones, just unclaimed bodies.

The city's morgues can only handle so much before temporary burials for Covid-19 victims, once an absolute worst-case scenario, become necessary.

Funeral directors talk openly about how scared and depressed the spiking death toll has left them. Even before this week's record number of deaths, some families have had to wait a week or more to bury and cremate their loved ones.

The daily rise in coronavirus deaths announced in New York state on Friday was 777 - down slightly from the record high of 799 the day before.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said he took "solace" from this fact, as well as the continued decline in the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to New York hospitals.

He said the state was succeeding in "flattening the curve" but was still enduring "great pain".
