Ruki Navaratna had pleaded with her brother, a leading Colombo newspaper editor, to leave Sri Lanka after his exposes of government corruption put his life in danger.

"We told him many times, please go, please get out," Ms. Navaratna said yesterday from her home in Ajax, Ont. "He was actually thinking of quitting everything and going to Australia.

"But too late."

Yesterday, her brother, Lasantha Wickramatunga, editor of the Sunday Leader, was on his way to work in Colombo when two gunmen on motorcycles shot him in the head, chest and stomach.

The assassination was the latest outrage in a civil war that is being watched closely by the hundreds of thousands of Canadians of Sri Lankan origin, most of whom live around Toronto.

Many are worried about family members in the South Asian country amid intense fighting as government forces appear on the verge of defeating the separatist rebels known as the Tamil Tigers.

The Sri Lankan Army captured the rebel headquarters in the northern city of Kilinochchi last Friday and is now trying to rout the remaining Tigers from their jungle bases, but there have been claims of civilian casualties.

Ranjani Kandiah of Markham, Ont., got a phone call from her brother last weekend telling her the news she had dreaded: an artillery shell had hit her parents' house in northern Sri Lanka.

She went to her computer and, on a pro-rebel Web site, found photos of her mother lying on a stretcher and her 66-year-old father with bandages on his chest and left wrist.

"She heard the news, she started to cry," her husband, Sekar Kandiah, who works for the auto-parts company Magna International Inc., said yesterday in an interview at their home in a snowy subdivision north of Toronto.

Civil war broke out in Sri Lanka in 1983, when the Tamil Tigers began fighting for independence for the country's ethnic Tamil minority. More than a million Sri Lankans have since fled the country. Canada is now home to an estimated 300,000 Sri Lankan Tamils, more than any other country.

After a ceasefire collapsed last year, full-scale fighting resumed and government forces have now recaptured most of the territory that had been held by the rebels, but human rights groups have accused both sides of wartime abuses against civilians.

Mrs. Kandiah said her parents were too scared to abandon their home in the rebel-held town of Vaddakkachchi. They were at home when it was shelled at 3 p. m. on Sunday. Her mother has four shrapnel wounds on her back,

she said. The elderly couple was taken to a rebel-controlled hospital, but she said it has little blood and medicine.

"We are really deeply disturbed and saddened by the latest developments," said David Poopilapillai, spokesman for the Canadian Tamil Congress, who said Sri Lankan Canadians are on edge over the violence in their homeland.

Civilians trapped in the war zone are getting killed and injured by shelling and air strikes, and also face a lack of food and medical supplies, he said. "We are appealing to our government, to the international community, to step in to address the immediate needs."

In Colombo, the capital, civilians live under the constant threat of Tamil Tigers suicide bombings. Meanwhile, those who voice criticism of the war effort have been attacked, apparently by shadowy pro-government armed groups.

Since the fall of the rebel capital last week, two media outlets that had been critical of the government have been attacked. On Tuesday, gunmen stormed the offices of a private television station and destroyed its broadcasting equipment.

The killing of Mr. Wickramatunga two days later was the top story on the many Sri Lankan-Canadian news Web sites. The outspoken editor had visited Canada annually to see his parents and three sisters, most recently last year. In 2000, he travelled to Ottawa to accept an Integrity Award from the anti-corruption organization Transparency International.

A lawyer by training, Mr. Wickramatunga, 50, founded the Sunday Leader with his brother in 1994. The paper so angered the government that it was banned for six months in 2000. He also contributed to Time magazine.

He knew he was in danger, Ms. Navaratna said. He had been beaten once before, and his house was shot at. In 2007, his printing presses were destroyed by gunmen. More recently, Ghotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Defence Secretary, sued him for libel for a series of articles on corruption. But Mr. Wickramatunga refused to back down. The motto at the top of the online edition of the Sunday Leader read: Unbowed and Unafraid.

"President Mahinda Rajapaksa, his associates and the government media are directly to blame because they incited hatred against him and allowed an outrageous level of impunity to develop as regards violence against the press," Reporters Without Borders said yesterday.

"The military victories in the north against the Tamil Tigers rebels must not be seen as a green light for death squads to sow terror among government critics, including outspoken journalists."

The government denied involvement and said it had ordered police to investigate thoroughly. President Rajapaksa said he was "grieved and shocked" by the killing.

In his last editorial, Mr. Wickramatunga accused President Rajapaksa of capitalizing politically on the war. "So long as a steady stream of Tamils are exterminated, there is little to impede Rajapaksa's cruise to yet another victory," he wrote.

Said his sister, "He hated corruption and he thought it was his job to expose it. We told him many times, please get out of it, it's not worth it, but..."

50 வயதை உடைய, வழக்கறிஞராக தொழில் முறை பயிற்சி எடுத்துக் கொண்ட லசந்த 1994 இல் சண்டே லீடரை தாபித்தார். 2000 ஆம் ஆண்டு அரசிற்கெதிராக எழுதியமையால் 6 மாதம் அப் பத்திரிகை தடை செய்யப் பட்டு இருந்தது. அவர் TIME சஞ்சிகைக்கும் பங்களிப்பு செய்து இருந்தார்.

"அவருக்கு தெரியும் அவர் ஆபத்ட்தில் உள்ளது" என்கிறார் ருக்கி நவரட்ன. முன்பு அவர் ஒரு முறை அடிக்கப் பட்டும், அவரின் வீட்டின் மீது 2007 இல் துப்பாக்கி பிரயோகம் செய்யப் பட்டும், அவரின் பிரசுர நிறுவனம் தீ வைக்கப் பட்டும் இருந்தன. மிக அண்மையில் பாதுகாப்பு செயலாளர் கோட்டபாயவினால் லசந்தவிற்கு எதிராக, அவர் தொடர்ச்சியாக ஊழல் பற்றி எழுதியமையால் அவதூறு வழக்கு தொடரப் பட்டு இருந்தது. ஆனால் அவர் அதற்கு அடிபணியவும் இல்லை. சண்டே லீடரின் இணைய பத்திரிகை தன் குறிக்கோளாக 'அச்சமில்லை, அடிபணிதலும் இல்லை" என்றே போட்டு வருகின்றது

எல்லைகள் தாண்டிய பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் அமைப்பு மகிந்த ராஜபக்சவையும் அவரது சகபாடிகளையும், அரச பத்திரிகைகளையும் நேரடியாக குற்றம் சாட்டுகின்றது. ஏனெனில், அவர்கள் தான் லசந்தவுக்கு எதிராக கடும் குற்றச்சாட்டுகளை சுமத்தினார்கள் என்றும் அத்துடன் பாரிய குற்றம் செய்த எவரும் இலகுவில் தப்பித்து கொள்ளக்கூடிய நிலவரத்தை தோற்றுவித்தார்கள் என்றும் காரணம் கூறுகின்றது

"வடக்கில் புலிகளுக்கு எதிராக இடம் பெறும் இராணுவ வெற்றிக்ளை அரசுக்கு எதிரானவர்களையும், பத்திரிகையாளர்களையும் அழிக்கும் குழுக்களுக்கான அனுமதி தரும் பச்சை சமிஞ்சை விளக்காக எடுத்துக் கொள்ள கூடாது" என்றும் அவ் அமைப்பு கூறியுள்ளது

அரசும், தம் மீதான் குற்றச்சாட்டை மறுத்துள்ளது. மகிந்த பொலிஸ் விசாரணைக்கு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளார் அத்துடன் இக் கொலையையிட்டு தான் அதிர்ச்சியும் ஆழ்ந்த கவலையும் கொள்வதாக கூறியுள்ளார்

தன் இறுதி ஆசிரியர் தலையங்கத்தில் "தொடர்ச்சியாக தமிழ் மக்களை அழிப்பதால் ராஜ பக்சவிற்கு இன்னும் பல (இராணுவ) வெற்றிகள் கிடைக்க சிறிய முயற்சிகளே போதும்" என்று குறிப்பிட்டு இருந்தார்
