கடும் போக்கு சோசலிசச் சீனாவில் Tiananmen சதுக்கத்தில் 1989 இல் ஜனநாயக அரசியல் மாற்றம் வேண்டி மாணவர்கள் மேற்கொண்ட ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் ஒன்றை சீன அரசு, அரச பயங்கரவாதத்தை ஏவி 1000 க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்களைக் கொன்று அடக்கியதன் 20ம் ஆண்டு நிறைவு நாள் இன்றாகும்.

இன்றும் (2009) கூட Tiananmen சதுக்கத்தில் சீன அரசபயங்கரவாதத்தின் கொடூரக் கொலை வெறிக்குப் பலியான மாணவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்த சீன அரசு அனுமதி அளிக்க மறுத்துவிட்டது. அதுமட்டுமன்றி வெளிநாட்டுச் செய்தியாளர்களையும் அவ்விடத்தில் ஒன்றுகூட அனுமதி மறுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

சீனா மீது அமெரிக்க சார்பு மேற்குலக நாடுகள் எப்போதும் கடும் மனித உரிமை மீறல் குற்றச்சாட்டுக்களை சுமத்தி வருகின்ற போதும் காத்திரமான நடவடிக்கைகளை எடுக்க முடியாத வகைக்கு சீனா பதில் நடவடிக்கைகளை எடுத்து தன்னை அக்குற்றச்சாட்டுகளில் இருந்தும் பாதுகாத்து வருகிறது.

அதுமட்டுமன்றி மோசமான மனித உரிமை மீறல்களைச் செய்யும் அரசுகளையும் சீனா தனது ஐநா அதிகாரத்தால் பாதுகாத்து வருகின்றமையும் இங்கு சுட்டிக்காட்டப்பட வேண்டிய ஒன்றாகும்.

அண்மையில் ஈழத்தில் 20,000 க்கும் மேற்பட்ட அப்பாவித் தமிழ் மக்களை சீன ஆதரவு சிங்களப் பயங்கரவாத அரசு ஒரே நாளில் கொன்று குவித்ததை சீனாவும் இந்தியாவும் போட்டி போட்டுக் கொண்டு மறைத்ததும் அன்றி சிறீலங்காவின் மனித உரிமை மீறல்கள் குறித்த விசாரணைக்காக ஐநாவில் கொண்டு வரப்பட்ட தீர்மானத்தை தோற்கடிக்கவும் இவ்விரண்டு நாடுகளும் பெரும் பாடுபட்டன என்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

இந்தியா மீதும் அதன் படைகள் காஷ்மீரில் மனித உரிமைகளை மோசமாக மீறி வருவதான குற்றச்சாட்டு பலமாக இருக்கின்றமையும் இங்கு சுட்டிக்காட்டத்தக்கது.

மேற்குலகு, தியனன்மென் (Tiananmen ) படுகொலைகளை 20 ஆண்டுகள் கழித்த பின் மீண்டும் தூக்கி பிடித்து நிற்கின்றன. சீனாவின் வல்லரசு முயற்சியினால் எரிச்சல் அடைந்திருக்கும் மேற்குலகம், மனித உரிமைகளின் பெயரால் சீனாவை சீண்ட ஆரம்பித்திருக்கின்றன

EVERY global analysis nods to China’s economy but there is rarely discussion of China’s Communist Government—the same government that 20 years ago today murdered hundreds of civilians.

As atrocities go, the massacre in Tiananmen Square that began on June 3, 1989 and went into the next morning was one of the very worst.

Only Communist Party leaders know exactly what the death toll was. The figure is a closely guarded secret, though estimates place it somewhere between 1500 and 4000.

The known facts are these. Communist leaders decided to end pro-freedom demonstrations by sending armed troops and tanks into Beijing’s central plaza and opening fire on students and academics.

They brought in troops from outside Beijing to ensure they would not have any ties to their targets and would not hesitate to fire on their fellow citizens. Another tactic was to imprison all dissidents unable to flee.

Twenty years on, the evidence indicates those strategies were outstandingly successful. According to European Parliament vice-president Edward McMillan-Scott, 15 protesters remain locked up.

Human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, a chance to win last year’s Nobel Peace Prize before the Nobel committee bowed to Chinese pressure, has been so tortured in prison he has twice attempted suicide.

Yet the Tiananmen massacre has been written out of history so completely that few Chinese students today have any idea what occurred on this day two decades ago.

Western nations, enjoying the benefits ofChinese trade, have been seduced into acomplicity of secrecy over the murders.

Though Tiananmen may have hindered Beijing’s bid for the 2000 Olympics, the veil of shame was well and truly ignored when the historically-corrupt Olympic movement awarded China the 2008 Games.

Those Games were viewed by democracy activists outside China as a means of preventing close examination of China’s human rights record. The Chinese Government is sensitive to criticism of its human rights history, as it should be.

In Australia, Chinese officials and their stooges in the Chinese expatriate community rallied to demonstrate during the Olympic torch relay and encouraged counter-demonstrations to pro-Tibetan protests.

The current economic crisis means few Western governments dare offend China, now the major holder of Western debt, even though China’s economic advancement has not driven matching political reform.

Hopes of reform were crushed at Tiananmen and were locked away when the reform-minded Communist Party general secretary Zhao Ziyang was arrested.

Zhao died, under house arrest, in 2005. His memoirs Prisoner Of The State, recorded in secret on cassettes of children’s poems, were published in the US last month.

Zhao makes clear his view that Western democracy demonstrates the most vitality of the major political systems and that China’s dictatorship is an inefficient system.

What is also apparent is his opinion that China has bought the silence of its people, for now, through economic reforms which have permitted some to get wealthy.

It has also bought the silence of the West.
