What is it about paradise islands and sport? Just as we emerged from the sight of England playing World Cup Cricket on Sri Lanka’s killing fields, we were confronted with the promise in October from World Motor Sport, of a Grand Prix staged in Bahrain around the very traffic island that hosted the pro-democracy rebellion that flowered during the Arab Spring.

Next Tuesday night at 11.05pm, Channel 4 transmits one of the hardest-hitting, best-researched, and most shocking documentaries in the Channel’s 30-year history. I am proud to be the reporter on ‘Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields’.

The film shows conclusive evidence of top-level Sri Lankan government involvement in the massacre of at least 40,000 Tamil civilians. The film does not spare the Tamil Tigers either, accusing them of war crimes too.

But the overwhelming truth revealed in the film is the extent to which the machinery of government and military security on the island was used to systematically corral and kill huge swathes of the Tamil population. We show hospitals – adorned with large red crosses – systematically bombed and shelled by government forces; we show Tamils, who had surrendered or been captured, executed on the field of battle.

Yet this is the very island that World Cricket CHOSE to host the most recent World Cup. There was little protest, little awareness of Sri Lanka’s bloody secret.

Thanks to the Formula 1 teams and Bernie Ecclestone himself – the current boss of world motor sport – the authorities in Bahrain will not now get their way in staging the Grand Prix in October. It may be that for once, blood speaks louder than cash. The minority Sunni Bahraini regime has spoken of the uniting force of sport. Yet dozens of Grand Prix employees – all from the Shia majority – have been locked up and deprived of their jobs. Bahrain’s protests are only being contained by sheer force of arms – arms belonging to neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

If Bahrain’s Grand Prix had gone ahead in October, there would have been the serious danger that the event could have become a rallying point, in which blood and oil would compete with each other for the drains.

A motion has been presented in the British Parliament calling on the UN to establish an independent, international mechanism to ensure truth, accountability and justice in Sri Lanka. The motion by ruling Conservative party MP Scott Lee, which had not yet been debated on, also urges British MPs to watch a Channel 4 documentary titled ‘Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields’ to be broadcast on14 June 2011. The motion further states that certain footage has been authenticated by the UN and has been declared as evidence of definitive war crimes by the UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial Killings. The Sri Lankan government has already said that the video is not authentic.

MP Lee Scott, is urging all members of the House of Commons to watch the Channel 4 documentary, Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields, on 14 June at 11.05 pm.

It features new video evidence of war crimes during the civil war, and Scott’s parliamentary motion notes that “certain footage has been authenticated by the UN and has been declared as evidence of definitive war crimes by the UN Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial killings; condemns strongly the Sri Lankan government for dismissing outright the analysis of the UN Special Rapporteur and its unwillingness to engage in a proper accountability process … supports the British Government’s policy of an independent investigation into these allegations; and calls on the UN to establish an independent, international mechanism to ensure truth, accountability and justice in Sri Lanka”.

I am a (British) citizen and member of the Tamil community with close links to Sri Lanka. I have friends and family there and I am deeply troubled by recent events relating to the country. In light of this, I wanted to raise with you the issue of the United Nations Panel of Experts report on Sri Lanka and to ask whether you would be willing to raise this matter in Parliament on my behalf.

Significantly during the 17th Session of the Human Rights Council currently taking place in Geneva, extended footage of the execution video obtained by Channel 4 News UK has been analysed by the UN Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial killings, Christof Heyns, who has stated that this evidence amounts to “definitive war crimes”.

A Channel 4 news television documentary, Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields, will be broadcast on the 14th June at 11:05pm (BST) in the UK (link to the trailer: http://www.channel4.com/info/press/news/sri-lankas-killing-fields-trailer). The one-hour programme looks set to include footage not previously broadcast, as well as a shocking video of summary execution and rape-murder which Channel 4 News has already aired (the video was denounced by the Sri Lankan government as a fake, and later authenticated by UN experts). The film was screened in Geneva on the 3rd June at an event hosted by Amnesty International. The video further intensifies the need for the need for truth and justice in Sri Lanka.

The UN Panel’s report published in April 2011 states that tens of thousands of innocent civilians lost their lives, during the final months of Sri Lanka’s civil war in 2009 (a link to the full report can be found here: http://www.un.org/News/dh/infocus/Sri_Lanka/POE_Report_Full.pdf). The Panel’s recommendation to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, was to immediately proceed to establish an independent international accountability mechanism in Sri Lanka.

Accountability for crimes against humanity is a duty under international law. Given that the Sri Lankan Government has dismissed the UN report as “fundamentally flawed”, I do not believe that a proper process of accountability will be forthcoming from within Sri Lanka.

Therefore I would be very grateful if you, as my representative in Parliament, will raise these issues with the British Government and the Prime Minister during Foreign Office Questions and Prime Minister’s Questions. I believe British parliamentarians and the UK Government can play a crucial role in ensuring truth, justice and, ultimately, reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

Lifting the lid on Sri Lanka's war crimes

My film Sri Lanka's Killing Fields exposes atrocities committed against civilian Tamils that the UN must not ignore

The brutal Sinhalese government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa – armed with the rhetoric of the "international war on terror" and the tacit support of most of the world – believes it has a licence to eradicate the Tamil Tigers for ever. The UN and other international agencies have been pressurised into leaving, the world's media have been excluded and critical local journalists have been exiled, disappeared or murdered. The world is looking away.

Over the next four months, two things happen. First the government does appear – through the deliberate targeting of hospitals and laughably named "no-fire zones" – to try to kill as many Tamils as possible; perhaps 40,000 civilians, perhaps far more (that they were in effect aided and abetted by the Tamil Tigers who used those same civilians as human shields does not in any way lessen the government's culpability.)

The other thing that happens is that the cameraman – or camerawoman – keep filming. As do many others. Sometimes on small domestic cameras, sometimes on phones. The Tamil side gets many of these images out on the internet. Other footage – grotesque images of war crimes, execution and brutality by Sri Lankan armed forces – is recorded by the perpetrators themselves on mobile phones. And so two years later there is an answer to that woman's terrified question: "What are you going to do with the video?"

The film has been creating a stir partly because some of the images are probably the most horrific ever to have been broadcast on mainstream television (hence the late-night slot). But we hope it will be remembered for another reason: we hope it will act as a reminder to those who would massacre their own people – and perhaps more importantly to the UN, the international community and the world's powers – that modern technology means you will never again get away with committing these kind of war crimes and crimes against humanity in secret. From now on, the victims – and all too often the perpetrators as well – will keep a record.

But that is only the first stage. The next is to ensure that this awful evidence is not ignored. These pictures push to the limit every normal rule of what is acceptable on television. You will see prisoners, bound and gagged, being executed in cold blood. You will see innocent civilians dying in agony on the ground in makeshift hospitals, which have been denied medicines and supplies by the Sri Lankan government. But if this is the only way to make people take this seriously, we believe it is the right thing to show these images.
