Will the real leader of the JVP, please stand up?”

Posted on 28 March 2010. Tags: jvp leader, sarath fonseka, united national party

“Will the real Slim Shady please stand up” is a line from the Eminem song “The real slim shady” and strangely from time to time various individuals have been pointing fingers at the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and ask “will the real leader of the JVP please stand up?”

The basis for this is the hypothesis that Somawansa Amarasinghe and the politburo represent only the public face of the party, and the ‘real’ JVP is an underground movement led by the elusive Kumar Gunaratnam alias Kumar Mahaththaya. It has also been alleged that Gunaratnam was saved by Gen. Sarath Fonseka during the JVP`s 1987-89 uprising and this is the real reason why the JVP is continuing to support Gen. Fonseka even after the United National Party (UNP) has left him to his own devises.

This issue was raised anew when the JVP leader was asked whether he was the “true” leader of the JVP in an interview with Derana TV, and many claim that Amarasinghe avoided answering the question correctly. Also, many critics of the JVP have jumped at this chance, like Sampath Ketapearachchi, yeah, you remember him, the person who claimed that JVP MP Sunil Handunneththi is held under house arrest by the party in early 2008.

Kumar Mahaththaya

“After the death of the JVP founder, Rohana Wijeweera, most of the party stalwarts left the island and one of them was Kumar Mahaththaya, who currently lives in the United Kingdom. He was a close personal associate of Rohana Wijeweera,” Ketapearachchi said. He added that during the early 1990s, the JVP was worried about revealing the identity of their leader due to security reasons.

“When the remaining JVP members regrouped in London, they elected Kumar Mahaththaya as their leader, but at first the JVP was afraid to reveal his identity. They were afraid that the Government will harm him or his family members who live in Sri Lanka, so his identity was kept a secret. But even thereafter, the JVP decided to keep his identity a secret since he was handling all their international affairs and they thought it was better that the identity of this man remains unknown to the public. Even now he can walk in and out of Sri Lanka without anyone recognizing him. Even a man like Wimal Weerawansa has never seen Kumar Mahaththaya.”

Ketapearachchi claimed that Kumar Mahaththaya was in Sri Lanka few months ago during the presidential election, and lived in the JVP HQ in Pelawatta. And he played a big role in the negotiations between General Fonseka and the JVP, and handled the international campaign funds.

“The JVP came into an agreement with the general under sheer pressure. Kumar Mahaththaya’s life was spared by Gen. Fonseka in 1989 and therefore he has a soft spot for Fonseka,” Ketapearachchi said. “Since he is handling the international businesses of the JVP, Mahaththaya has great power and like many old school JVPers, he believes that an armed struggle is the only way to come into power. The JVP never really cared about the number of votes they got, but only about the cadres. The mighty politburo Somawansa is nothing but a mere decoration and a figurehead, while the true leader and guide of the party is Kumar Mahaththaya.”

Public event

Meanwhile JVP propaganda secretary and the General Secretary of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Vijitha Herath told LAKBIMAnEWS that such claims are nothing new and that if these allegations were true, the successive government would have done everything to expose this and tarnish the image of the party.

“Various individuals have been making such allegations about the JVP from the 90s, they always talk about secret leaders and an armed wing of the JVP. These allegations specially come up around an important election. We have always requested Governments to investigate into these allegations and take action,” Herath said.

He added that the leader of the party and other politburo leaders are chosen each year by the general assembly of the party, and that this event is open to the media. “It is the general secretary of the JVP that yields the most power but we take decisions in the politburo in a very democratic manner. There is no hidden leader that acts as a puppeteer, the leader of the JVP is Somawansa Amarasinghe, until someone replaces him at the AGM. It’s a very transparent process and there are no secrets here.”

Fonseka and the military wing

11-1.jpg“If the government is ready to make allegations about a shadow leader and a military wing, it should take immediate action to reveal this conspiracy since having a para military outfit is against the law of the land,” Vijitha Herath said. (See main story.)

“Having a secret leader is not a crime but the claims of a military wing are a serious allegation. And if there was even a single element of truth in this, the government would have just had a field day. The government has an army that defeated the LTTE and it has a strong intelligence unit that managed to capture KP in Malaysia therefore, I’m sure they would have found our “military wing” if such a thing existed,” Herath said. “And some claim that we supported Gen. Fonseka to obtain his military expertise and to tap into army deserters.

What nonsense is this? The government should just get the CID to look into this and take necessary action, without making allegations on the media.”

he JVP organisers of Kalutara, Colombo and Gampaha have joined politbureau

member Premkumar Gunaratnam’s group in opposition to the Somawansa Amarasinghe

camp and triggered a major crisis within the party.

Premkumar Gunaratnam, it is learnt, is organising party cadres in 14 districts

and has even moved to dissolve dozens of JVP affiliated organisations,

including the National Bhikku Front.

Most of the party offices in the Western Province have remained closed during

the past few days.

1988/89 insurgency), had been in self exile in Australia till recently. He had

reportedly returned to Sri Lanka early this month.

It is learnt that the Somawansa camp is slated to hold a media briefing soon

to tell their side of the story.

Gunaratnam is said to be of the opinion that the JVP should support the Tamil

cause, while the Amarasinghe group is opposed to communalising the party.

Highly placed party sources said that there was a plan by Gunaratnam group to

go underground and pave the way for an armed struggle.
