அவுஸ்ரேலியாவின் சிட்னி வில்லாவூட் தடுப்பு நிலையத்தில் தமிழ் இளைஞர் ஒருவர் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்ட சம்பவம் அவுஸ்ரேலியாவின் அகதிகள் பற்றிய கொள்கை குறித்த கடும் விவாதங்களை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

“சுட்டிவிகடன்“ என்று நண்பர்களால் அழைக்கப்பட்ட 27 வயதான ஜெயசங்கர் ஜெயரட்ணம் என்ற இளைஞர் கடந்த புதன்கிழமை அதிகாலை, அதிகளவிலான தூக்க மாத்திரைகளை அருந்தி தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டார்.

கடந்து ஆண்டு மார்ச் மாத இறுதிப் பகுதியில் இருந்து இந்த முகாமில் தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த இவரது தஞ்சக் கோரிக்கை கடந்த ஓகஸ்ட் மாதமே ஏற்கப்பட்டு விட்டது.

ஆனால் அவுஸ்ரேலிய புலனாய்வு அதிகாரிகளின் அறிக்கை கிடைப்பது தாமதமாகியதால் தான் தொடர்ந்து தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தார்.

அவுஸ்ரேலிய அதிகாரிகள் அகதிகள் விடயத்தில் வேண்டா வெறுப்புடன் நடந்து கொள்வதால் தான் இந்தச் சம்பவம் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளதாக கடும் விமர்சனங்கள் எழுந்துள்ளன.

அவுஸ்ரேலிய பாதுகாப்புப் புலனாய்வுப் பிரிவின் அறிக்கைக்காக இவருடன் இன்னமும் 461 பேர் வில்லாவூட் தடுப்பு நிலையத்தில் காத்திருந்ததாக அவுஸ்ரேலிய குடிவரவு அமைச்சர் கிறிஸ் பொவன் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

ஜெயசங்கரை உரிய நேரத்தில் வெளியே சென்று வாழ அனுமதித்திருந்தால் இந்தச் சம்பவத்தை தடுத்திருக்கலாம் என்று ஜெயசங்கரின் சட்டவாளர் கூறியுள்ளார்.

“இந்த நிகழ்வு மிகவும் சோகமானது. ஆனால் துரதிஸ்டவசமாக இது ஆச்சரியமளிக்கக் கூடியதல்ல“ என்று அகதிகள் நடவடிக்கைக் கூட்டமைப்பின் பரப்புரையாளர் ஜெமீமா மௌபிறே தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

தடுப்பு நிலையங்களை மூடிவிட்டு அகதிகளை சமூகத்தில் இணைக்குமாறு தாம் அரசாங்கத்திடம் கோரி வருவதாகவும் அவர் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

அதிகளவிலான தூக்க மாத்திரைகளை அருந்தியே ஜெயசங்கர் தற்கொலை செய்துள்ளதாக அவரது நண்பர் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். ஆனால் அதுபற்றிக் கருத்து வெளியிட குடிவரவு அமைச்சர் பொவன் மறுத்து விட்டார்.

இந்தத் தற்கொலையை அடுத்து அவுஸ்ரேலியாவின் அகதிகள் கொள்கை குறித்து கடும் விமர்சனங்கள் எழுந்துள்ளன.

அவுஸ்ரேலியாவில் தஞ்சம் கோரிய ஆறு பேர் கடந்த ஆண்டு செப்ரெம்பர் மாதத்துக்குப் பின்னர் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டுள்ளனர். இவர்களில் நால்வர் வில்லாவூட் நிலையத்தில் தற்கொலை செய்துள்ளனர்.

தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்ட ஜெயசங்கர் பற்றிய அறிக்கை கொமன்வெல்த் ஆலாட்சி அதிகாரி பணியகத்துக்கு ஆறு நாட்கள் முன்னதாகவே கிடைத்திருந்தாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் அதுபற்றிய விசாரணைகள் தொடங்கப்படாதிருந்தன.

இவரது மரணம் வில்லாவூட் தடுப்பு நிலையத்தில் உள்ள தமிழ் அகதிகளை மட்டுமன்றி ஈரான் உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு நாட்டவர்களையும் பெரும் அதிர்ச்சிக்குள்ளாக்கியுள்ளது.

ஜெயசங்கர் தடுப்பு நிலையத்தில் இருந்த போது தமிழ்ப் பெண் ஒருவரைக் காதலித்தாகவும், அவரை விரைவில் திருமணம் செய்வதற்குத் திட்டமிட்டிருந்ததாகவும் அவரது நண்பர்கள் கூறியுள்ளனர்.

இவரது தாய், தந்தையர் இறந்து விட்டதாகவும், எப்போதும் சகோதரன் மற்றும் சகோதரி பற்றியே கவலைப்படுவார் என்றும் நண்பர்கள் மேலும் கூறியுள்ளனர்.

ஜெயசங்கரின் தாய் சிறிலங்காப் படையினரால் கொல்லப்பட்டதாக அவரது நண்பர் ரமேஸ் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

இவரது மரணம் பற்றிய தகவலை சிறிலங்காவிலுள்ள சகோதரனிடம் தெரிவிக்க எடுக்கப்பட்ட முயற்சிகள் பயனளிக்கவில்லை என்று கூறிவந்த அவுஸ்ரேலிய அதிகாரிகள், நேற்று அந்தத் தகவல் பரிமாறப்பட்டு விட்டதாக இன்று அறிவித்துள்ளனர்.

இதற்கிடையே, அவுஸ்ரேலியாவின் வடக்கிலுள்ள டாவின் தடுப்பு நிலையத்தில் நேற்றிரவு மற்றொரு அகதி தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்ள முயன்றுள்ளார்.

ஈரான் நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த இவர் ஏனையவர்களால் காப்பாற்றப்பட்டு டாவின் மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

SHOOTY*, 27, would rush to help the elderly Tamil volunteers who brought traditional food to Sri Lankan asylum seekers locked in the Villawood detention centre. ''He was a gentleman,'' said his friend Sara Nathan.

A fellow Tamil and neighbour in Villawood's residential housing detention, Yogachandran Rahavan, recalled Shooty entertaining his children. ''He was very good with my kids. We were paralysed when we heard the news,'' said Mr Rahavan last night, still struggling to find the words to tell his children of the death.

The Rahavans - who have been refused security clearance by ASIO, so must live indefinitely locked up - had planned to do something to cheer Shooty up yesterday.

It was the Diwali Hindu festival, and Shooty, who was constantly anxious about his young brother and sister left behind in Sri Lanka, was devastated to discover his request to visit a friend, George, outside Villawood to share a meal for the special day had been rejected by Immigration.

Ms Nathan was on the phone to Shooty's distraught girlfriend and former fellow detainee, Sangi, until 3am yesterday as she broke the news that Shooty had killed himself by taking poison.

Three weeks earlier, Shooty had asked to visit Ms Nathan's home to attend her daughter's engagement party. Immigration refused.

Shooty's hopes had been raised when he was moved to the family housing compound at Villawood three months ago. He had been told informally this was a step towards community detention, and he would be able to visit the temple and shop.

After arriving by boat in October 2009, moving from Christmas Island to Villawood in March 2010, and an initial rejection, he was finally found to be a refugee in August. But the ASIO security process was taking time. ''He was frustrated with a lot of things,'' said Ms Nathan. ''He had seen a Tamil family split up because of a security clearance; the wife struggling to be a single mother and the father crying. He had seen others attempt suicide.''

He had attended a trauma and torture counselling session.

Mr Rahavan first met Shooty on Christmas Island. ''He was always talking about his brother in Sri Lanka,'' he said. ''He didn't have a mother or father. He was very humble. He was very sensitive.''

Another Tamil detainee in the main Villawood centre, Ramees, said Shooty's mother had been killed by the army.

Ramees said he had tried to kill himself. ''I have tried suicide three times - cutting my neck and cutting my hands. I have got four times rejection.''

The federal government was informing Shooty's family in Sri Lanka of the tragic news yesterday. Inside Villawood, many detainees were in tears, as were staff.

Refugee activist Bala Vigneswaran, who last saw Shooty 10 days ago, said he was surprised that the ''very strong-minded'' and ''larrikin'' Sri Lankan, who had taken part in a rooftop protest in September 2010 in response to the suicide of a Fijian detainee, had taken his own life.

''He was very disappointed he was not allowed outside the compound; something snapped,'' said Mr Vigneswaran.

He urged the federal government to reduce the time any asylum seeker spends in detention.

A nun from the Sisters of Mercy recalled knocking on Shooty's door and giving him singlets for the cold. ''I was just shocked to hear it,'' she said of the news.
