வன்னிப்புலிகள் தாக்குதல் மேற்கொண்டால்! எமது இலக்கு கூட்டமைப்பு மீதும் திரும்பும்! மட்டு அம்பாறை புலிகள் தெரிவிப்பு! எமது உறுப்பினர்கள் ஆதரவாளர்கள் மீது வன்னிப் புலிகள் தாக்குதல் மேற்கொண்டால் எமது இலக்கு நேரடியாக தமிழ் கூட்டமைப்பு மீதும் திரும்பும் என்று மட்டு அம்பாறை விடுதலைப் புலிகள் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். நாம் ஆரம்பத்தில் இவ் கூட்டமைப்புக்கு ஆதரவு வழங்கி வெற்றியீட்ட வைத்தது எமது மண்ணை அபிவிருத்தி செய்யவும் மக்களின் இயல்பான வாழ்வுக்கு துணைபோகவுமே. நமது செயல்வடிவம் சிதைக்கப்பட்டு, கூட்டமைப்பு தனது பாதையில் இருந்து வழிதவறி வன்னித்தலைமையின் முழுமையான ஆளுமையில் செயற்படுவது எமக்கு ஏற்படையது அல்ல. இதற்கிடையே புலிகளே கூட்டமைப்பு கூட்டமைப்பே புலிகள் என்று சம்பந்தன் ஜயா உட்பட சில பா.உகள் தெரிவித்து வருகின்றனர் இவ்வாறானவர்களின் அறிவிப்புக்களும் செயல்களும் வன்னிபுலிகளினது நேரடியான அணுகுமுறைகளின் கீழ் கூட்டமைப்பு செயற்படுவது என்பதை மேலும் உறுதிப்படுத்தியுள்ளது. ஆகவே இனிவரும் காலங்களில் வன்னிப் புலிகள் எம்மீது எந்தவொரு வஞ்சகத்தனமான முறையில் தாக்குதல் மேற்கொண்டாலும் எமது மேல் நடவடிக்கை கூட்டமைப்பு மீதே திரும்பும். ஆகவே கூட்டமைப்பில் உள்ளவர்கள் சிந்தித்து செயற்படுவது சிறந்தது. உங்களிற்கு உங்கள் வாழ்க்கை மீது கரிசனை இருந்தால் இன்றே தமிழ் கூட்டமைப்பை விட்டு வெளியேறி இயல்பு வாழ்வில் ஈடுபடுங்கள் என்றும் மட்டு அம்பாறை விடுதலைப் புலிகள் விடுத்துள்ள அறிக்கையில் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

வன்னிப்புலிகளின் பண்ணையில் வேலை பார்த்தோர் கொலை. நேற்று முன்தினம் வெள்ளிக்கிழமை மட்டக்களப்பு ஏறாவ10ர் நாவந்தேனியா மடு பகுதியில் அமைந்திருந்த பண்ணையில் வேலை பார்த்த கிரான்குளத்தைச் சேர்ந்த கந்தக்குட்டி மயில்வாகனம், ராஜபுரம் மாரப்பலத்தைச் சேர்ந்த தெய்வமணி குட்டிக்கண்ணன் ஆகியோரே கொல்லப்பட்டவர்களாவர் இவர்கள் இருவரும் வன்னிப் புலிகளின் ஆதரவாளர்களாவர் என்றும் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகின்றது.

கழுத்தெடுக்கும் வன்னிப்புலி. துப்பாக்கிகளிற்கு ஒய்வு கொடுத்துள்ள வன்னிப்புலிகள் தற்போது வாள்களிற்கும் கத்திகளிற்கும் புத்துயீர் கொடுத்துள்ளனர். மிகவும் கொரூரமான முறையில் தலை வெட்டி கொலை செய்யும் வன்னிப்புலியின் கொலை வெறியை தட்டிக்கேட்பதற்கு யாரும் இல்லையா? கடந்த சில தினங்களிற்கு முன் படுவான்கரை அம்மன் கோவிலில் வைத்து கைது செய்து சென்ற இரு இளைஞர்களின் தலையை வெட்டி எடுத்துவிட்டு அவர்களது உடலை தரவை பகுதியில் வீசிய வன்னிப்புலிகள். நேற்றைய தினம் யாழ்ப்பாணம் நெல்லியடி வதிரி எனும் இடத்தில் ஒர் இளைஞனின் கழுத்தை வெட்டி எடுத்துவிட்டு அவரது முண்டத்தை மட்டும் வீசிவிட்டு சென்றுள்ளனர்.

A pro-Tamil Tiger rebel Web site is accusing the Sri Lankan military of harboring a renegade rebel leader and says their collaboration is damaging the country's peace prospects. The revelation ``is likely to raise serious doubts on the bona fides of the government of Sri Lanka - and has introduced a potentially explosive component to prospects for peace,'' the Web site said.

The military has denied any involvement.

``We have nothing to do with their affairs and we deny that Mr. Muralitharan is with us,'' Defense Ministry's spokesman, Sumedha Perera said.

There was no independent confirmation of the TamilNet report. Phone calls made to the mainstream rebel group in the north remained unanswered.

After the uprising was defeated, the Tamil Tiger rebels announced a general amnesty for guerrillas who sided with Muralitharan, but not for the leader himself.

The rebels launched their separatist insurgency in 1983 in Sri Lanka - , claiming discrimination at the hands of the majority Sinhalese. More than 65,000 people perished before the government and rebels signed a Norway-brokered cease-fire in February 2002. Peace talks, however, broke down last year.

The rebels say Karuna is now working with military intelligence

Tamil Tiger rebels have accused the Sri Lankan security forces of aiding and abetting a breakaway rebel commander.

They say that such actions could undermine the current ceasefire.

The Tigers split in March when their second highest military leader, Colonel Karuna, said he wanted to run the east of the island separately.

But since then, four of the colonel's supporters have defected with what they say are details of his collaboration with the Sri Lankan military.

'Escape from jungle'

The Sri Lankan military spokesman has strenuously denied reports that Colonel Karuna has been helped by the security forces.

But the Tigers have produced four senior female fighters - including the former women's military wing head Nilavini - who say they were with Colonel Karuna when he vanished in April.

They say a Muslim former parliamentarian, Ali Zahir Mowlana, helped them escape from the eastern jungles to the capital.

Mr Mowlana admits he did, but says he acted on humanitarian grounds and had no contact with Colonel Karuna after helping the group get to Colombo.

According to Nilimini, they stayed in the Hilton Hotel in Colombo for four days during which time the leader of a pro-government Tamil militia group, Douglas Devananda, telephoned Colonel Karuna and asked him to join him.

The women fighters say Colonel Karuna told them he had rejected the offer and instead decided to work with army intelligence.

Saudi housemaids

Nilavini says a group, which included Colonel Karuna's wife and three children, his spokesman Varathan and other rebels, stayed in a safe house in Colombo for eight days before settling into another house in the suburb of Nugegoda near the Apollo Hospital.

There the female rebels say Colonel Karuna had a plain clothes bodyguard armed with a pistol and received visits from what they believe were Sri Lankan intelligence officers.

The four women say they asked to be sent back to their families - but instead Colonel Karuna offered to send them to Saudi Arabia as housemaids.

Many of the Tigers' fighters are women

Nilavini said they were kept locked inside the house but cooked meals together and watched television with Colonel Karuna's family.

On this basis of overheard phone calls, the women allege that Colonel Karuna is linked to the recent killings of prominent civilians in the east.

According to Nilavini, on Friday a driver came to collect Colonel Karuna and his family who said they were going to another country for some months but would return to start a political party.

The four women fighters say they escaped and hired a van and drove to rebel territory in the east where they surrendered.

The Tamil Tigers say the women leaders, who were under armed guard during the news conference, will now be demoted to lower ranks as a punishment.

It may be that security surrounding the women was lax because few would have expected them to take the risk of returning to the Tigers who are renowned for killing traitors.

- இவ்வாறு அடித்துக் கூறியிருக்கிறார் கடந்த வாரம்வரை கருணாவுடன் கூடவிருந்த அவரின் உதவியாளர்களுள் ஒருவரான நிலாவினி.

ஐ.தே.கட்சியின் தேசியப்பட்டியல் எம்.பியான அலி ஸாஹிர் மௌலானாவே கிழக்கு மாகாணத்திலிருந்து தங்களைக் காப்பாற்றிக் கொழும்புக்குக் கூட்டிச்சென்றார் என்றும் அவர் தகவல் வெளியிட்டிருக்கின்றார்.

கருணாவுடன் சென்ற பெண் தளபதிகளில் ஒருவரான நிலாவினி நேற்று மட்டக்களப்பில் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் கட்டுப்பாட்டுப் பிரதேசத்தில் செய்தியாளர்களைச் சந்தித்துப் பேசி னார். அப்போதே அவர் இதனைத் தெரிவித்தார்.

அவருடன் முன்னாள் தளபதிக ளான தீந்தமிழ், லாவண்யா, பிறேமினி ஆகியோரும் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் மட்டு - அம்பாறை மாவட்ட இராணுவத் தளபதி றமணன், நிர்வா கச் செயலகப் பொறுப்பாளர் பாபா ஆகியோரும் இச்சந்திப்பில் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

செய்தியாளர் மாநாட்டில் மேற் படி நான்கு பெண்களும் தெரிவித்த தாவது:-

கடந்த ஏப்ரல் மாதம் 12 ஆம் திகதி மட்டக்களப்பிலிருந்து புறப் பட்டு, கொழும்பு வீதியால் சென்று கொண்டிருந்தபோது நாலாம் புதுச்சந்தியில் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் அலிஸாகிர் மௌலானா பொலீஸாருடன் வந்து எம்மை வான் ஒன்றில் ஏற்றிச் சென்றார்.

குருநாகலில் நாங்கள் தேநீர் அருந்தினோம். பின்னர், அங்கிருந்து கொழும்பு ஹில்டன் ஹோட்டலுக்கு எங்களை அழைத்துச் சென்றனர். அங்கு நான்கு நாள்கள் தங்கியி ருந்தோம்.

ஏப்ரல் 12ஆம் திகதி முதல் 15 ஆம் திகதிவரை நாங்கள் ஹில்டன் ஹோட்டலில் தங்கியிருந்தோம். பின்னர் அங்கிருந்து மற்றொரு வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றோம். அந்த வீட்டில் கருணாவின் மனைவி, மூன்று பிள்ளைகள், கருணாவின் மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளர் வர தன் மற்றும் சில போராளிகள் தங்கியிருந்தனர். அங்கு நாங்கள் ஐந்தாறு நாள்கள் தங்கியிருந்தபின், அப்பலோ வைத்தியசாலைக்கு அண்மையில் நுகேகொடவிலுள்ள ஒரு வீட்டுக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டோம். அங்கு எமக்கு இராணுவப் புலனாய்வுப் பிரிவினர் பாது காப்பை அளித்தனர்.

நாங்கள் எங்களை வீட்டுக்கு, எங்கள் பெற்றோரிடம் அனுப்புமாறு கருணாவிடம் கோரினோம். அதற்குப் பதிலாக அவர் சவுதிஅரேபியாவுக்கு எம்மை அனுப்பலாம் எனவும் அங்கு வீட்டுப்பணிப்பெண்ணாக நாம் வேலை செய்யலாம் எனவும் கூறினார்.

அவரின் போக்கு எங்களுக்குப் பிடிக்கவில்லை.

கொழும்பில் அவருடன் இருந்த சமயத்தில் அறை ஒன்றுக்குள் புூட்டி எம்மை முடக்கி வைத்திருந்தனர். எனினும், கருணாவின் மனைவியுடன் சேர்ந்து சமைக்கவும், தொலைக் காட்சி பார்க்கவும் நாம் அனுமதிக் கப்பட்டோம்.

இலங்கை இராணுவத்தின் பெரிய படைப்பிரிவு கருணாவுக்குப் பாதுகாப்பு வழங்கவில்லை. ஆனால், இலங்கை இராணுவத்தின் ஒரு பிரிவு - பெரும்பாலும் புலனாய்வுப் பிரிவு பாதுகாப்பு வழங்கியதென்பதை நாம் உறுதிப்படக் கூறுகின்றோம். அவர்கள் கனரக ஆயுதங்களுடன் பெரிய குறு}ப்| ஆக வரவில்லை. சீருடையு டனும் வரவில்லை. சாதாரண உடையில் ஆயுதங்களுடன் அவர்கள் பாதுகாப்பு வழங்கினார்கள்.

அடிக்கடி கருணா எம்முடன் தொடர்புகொண்டு பேசுவார். கடந்த 13 ஆம் திகதி நாமிருந்த வீட்டுக்கு வந்த கருணா, தான் வெளிநாடு செல்லப் போகிறார் என்றும் ஐந்தாறு மாதங்களில் திரும்பி வந்து கட்சி ஒன்றை ஆரம்பிக்கப் போகிறார் என்றும், அதுவரை எம்மைக் காத்திருக்கு மாறும் கூறினார்.

பின்னர் இராணுவப் புலனாய்வுப் பிரிவினரின் பாதுகாப்புடன் ஒரு காரில் ஏறிச் சென்றுவிட்டார். அவருடன் அவரது மனைவி, பிள்ளைகளும் சென்றனர். அவர்கள் எங்கு சென்றார்கள் என்று எங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. வெளி நாடு செல்வதாக மட்டுமே எங்களி டம் சொன்னார்கள்.

அதன்பின்னர் அப்பலோ வைத்திய சாலை அருகிலிருந்த நாங்கள் ஒருவாறு தப்பி வெளியேறி விடுதலைப் புலிகளுடன் சேர்ந்து கொண்டோம்.

இயக்கத்திலிருந்து பிரிந்து சென்ற வர்கள் எவருமே அவருடன் இப்போது இல்லை. தேசியத் தலைவரின் சிறப்புப் படையினர் நடத்திய தாக்குதலுக்கு ஈடுகொடுக்க முடியாமலேயே அவர் மட்டக்களப்பிலிருந்து ஓடவேண்டி ஏற்பட்டது.

நாங்கள் அங்கு தங்கியிருந்த காலத்தில் அரசியல்வாதிகள் எவரும் எம்முடன் தொடர்புகொள்ள வில்லை. அரச உயர் அதிகாரி ஒருவர் மட்டும் எம்முடன் தொடர்புகொண்டு பேசினார் அவர் யார் என எமக்குத் தெரியாது.

கருணாவின் தவறால் இயக்கத்தை விட்டு விலக்கிப்போன போராளிகள் மீண்டும் இயக்கத்தில் இணைந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். தலைமைக்கு விசுவாசமாகவும், அர்ப்பணிப்புடனும் செயற்பட்டு தேசிய விடுதலையை வென்றெடுக்க அனைவரும் ஒன்றுபட வேண்டும் - இப்படி அவர்கள் தெரி வித்தனர்.

இந்த நால்வரும் அவர்கள் விட்ட தவறு காரணமாக இயக்கத்தில் பதவி நிலை இறக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்கள் எனத் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது

EPDP Leader talks to LTTEs renegade leader Karuna

Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) Leader Douglas Devananda today spoke to LTTEs rebel Leader Muralitharan alias Karuna, where matters concerning Karunas possibility of entering politics was discussed at length. An EPDP spokesman said that former LTTE breakaway leader spoke to Mr. Devananda over the phone, seeking advice on how he can enter the democratic stream. The former militant leader is ready to give up his military career and he took the first move by contacting Mr. Devananda, the spokesman added.

Associated Press, Tue June 22, 2004 09:11 EDT . - - COLOMBO, June 22 (Kyodo) Sri Lanka - 's ethnic Tamil rebels accused the government Tuesday of introducing a ''potentially explosive component'' to the fragile peace process as internationally backed efforts to get stalled negotiations back on track continued.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam repeated allegations that the military is covertly assisting renegade LTTE eastern commander Vinayagamurthy Muralitheran, best known as Karuna, who broke away in March and has gone underground for the past several weeks.

The Karuna rebellion was swiftly quelled by the Tigers who killed scores of cadres loyal to the battle-hardened eastern commander and persuaded others to rejoin LTTE ranks. But Karuna has retained a hit-and-run capability that has infuriated Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The pro-LTTE TamilNet website said Tuesday that ''revelations'' of military assistance to Karuna to leave his stronghold in the eastern Batticaloa district and travel to Colombo have introduced a potentially explosive component to the prospects for peace.

Four senior women commanders who broke ranks with Karuna and rejoined the LTTE have publicly claimed that they traveled with him to Colombo under military auspices.

But Defense Secretary Cyril Herath has flatly denied any military role in sheltering Karuna, saying these are ''just allegations.''

''If the LTTE can provide evidence, the government will investigate the matter,'' he told the BBC's Sinhala service.

Herath stressed that the Colombo government is committed to peace talks and added that ''already some dialogue'' is underway.

''Under these circumstances, it is wrong to think the government will start a war,'' the secretary said, describing local media reports of recent fighting between the two LTTE factions as ''gross exaggerations.''

Sri Lankan Government Says Renegade Rebel Won't Harm Cease-Fire

June 22 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka's government said the leader of a breakaway Tamil rebel group won't threaten the cease- fire agreement that halted the island's two-decade civil war.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which has fought for an independent homeland in the south Asian island, yesterday accused the government of hiding Colonel Karuna, the leader of a break- away faction in the east, the TamilNet website reported.

``We have no information of where Karuna is and I'm not aware that the army is keeping him,'' said Defense Secretary Cyril Herath in a telephone interview, ``I don't think that Karuna is a threat to the cease-fire but the LTTE may see this differently depending on how they look at it.''

Sri Lanka has been unable to restart peace talks, after Norway, the peace broker, failed to end differences between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels. The whereabouts of Karuna, whose real name is Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan, has become a sticking point for the main rebel group, which says the government isn't serious about restarting peace talks.

This is ``likely to raise serious doubts on the bona fides of the government of Sri Lanka and has introduced a potentially explosive component to prospects for peace,'' the TamilNet website said yesterday.

The main rebel group regained control of an area held by the breakaway faction after clashes in April. The Liberation Tigers are still observing a cease-fire agreement reached with the government in February 2002.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga who promised to restart peace talks after her United People's Freedom Alliance party won elections in April has repeatedly said she is committed to the peace process. Negotiations for a permanent peace settlement collapsed in 1985, 1990, 1995 and in April last year.

Pact With India

Herath said Sri Lanka will sign a defense cooperation agreement with India in the ``next two to three months'' aimed at improving ties between the neighboring countries.

``We're in the process of finalizing finer points of the agreement and we should be signing it soon,'' said Herath.

The agreement will mean both South Asian nations will conduct more military training exercises and Indian military ships will visit Trincomalee, the eastern port in Sri Lanka that borders rebel-held territory.

At least 60,000 people have died in one of Asia's longest civil wars as the rebels seek independence in the north-east of the island, where most of the Tamils live.

The Tamils, who make up fewer than a fifth of the island's population of 19.7 million, say they are discriminated against by the majority Sinhalese, who are mostly Buddhist. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is designated as a terrorist group by the U.S., U.K. and India.

UNP's involvement with Karuna jeopardises peace process

The opposition United National Party's reported involvement with the renegade LTTE commander, Col Karuna, has further complicated the peace process in Sri Lanka, which is already mired in a controversy over the agenda for the peace talks between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE.

Nilavini, a close associate of Karuna's who sided with Velupillai Prabhakaran last weekend, had said that it was an UNP MP, Ali Zaheer Mowlana, who had escorted Karuna and his entourage to Colombo after the collapse of his 41-day revolt against Prabhakaran.

The pro-LTTE daily Sudar Oli said in an editorial on Wednesday that Mowlana had done so with the knowledge of his party chief, Leader of the Opposition, and former Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe.

According to the daily, Mowlana had been in touch with Karuna, for a long time. The April 2 parliamentary elections in Batticaloa and Amparai districts, which were held when Karuna was controlling that area, had returned four Tamil MPs who were known as Karuna's nominees. Mowlana saw a major political opportunity in this development. He lost no time in taking these four MPs under his wing. When the foursome had to come to Colombo to attend a post-election meeting of their pro-LTTE party, the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), Mowlana arranged police protection for them, as they could be attacked by Prabhakaran's agents.

Mowlana told his party leader Wickremesinghe, that Karuna and his four MPs were under his control and that they could be useful. This is said to have impressed Wickremesinghe who rewarded him with a seat in parliament under the nominated National List. Mowlana had got the nomination over-riding the claims of many stalwarts of the UNP, who had been cabinet ministers in the Wickremesinghe government.

Sudar Oli said that the Tamils, who believed that Ranil Wickremesinghe and his UNP were more friendly with them than the ruling United Peoples' Freedom Alliance (UPFA), would be very dismayed by Nilavini's revelations. They would again prove to the Tamils that no Sinhala-majority was genuinely friendly and sympathetic to them. They were birds of the same feather which necessarily flocked together.

The Sinhala-majority in Sri Lanka was hoping that Karuna would help weaken the LTTE and drive a wedge between the Eastern Tamils and Northern Tamils. If the latter were to happen the LTTE led by Prabhakaran would not be able to realise its dream of uniting the North and East and form a single Tamil Homeland. The Sinhala fear is that under a united North and East, the Sinhala and Muslim communities in the East will be discriminated against and oppressed by the Tamil majority. It is also felt that a Tamil Homeland or Tamil Eelam without the East will be a very weak one, and that the separatist project will eventually fail. The East is agriculturally fertile and has one of the world's best harbours -Trincomalee. The North, on the other hand, is arid.

When Karuna revolted against Prabhakaran in March this year, he had raised the issue of the Northern Tamils discriminating against the Eastern Tamils. Sinhala leaders and the Sinhala press were overjoyed and it was rumoured that the Sri Lankan armed forces were tacitly helping the rebel.

Eventually, Nilavini, came out with the full story. She told newsmen that Mowlana had arranged for a Sri Lanka police escort to Karuna and 17 others who had fled with him. They were put up in Hilton Hotel in Colombo for three days, before they were shifted to bungalows within Colombo and outside. Sri Lankan security forces provided security and an intelligence officer would frequently come to meet Karuna.

Cabinet minister and pro-government Tamil leader, Douglas Devananda, used to contact Karuna frequently over the phone asking him to join his Eelam Peoples' Democratic Party (EPDP). But Karuna told him that he preferred to start his own party and work with Sri Lankan intelligence, Nilavini said.

She and three other women associates of Karuna's were against this plan and wanted to return to Batticalao. Nilavini said that the mainstream LTTE had been in touch with her over mobile phone and had promised an amnesty if she and others abandoned Karuna. Karuna, who had ceased communicating with his associates for sometime, suddenly disappeared. Once this happened, security was relaxed and the women cadres were able to escape easily.

The current whereabouts of Karuna are not known. But the LTTE believes that he is somewhere under Sri Lankan armed forces' protection.

The LTTE is reported to have decided to take up the issue of the Sri Lankan government's complicity with Karuna and expose it throughout the world. The LTTE sees the government's role as a sign of its insincerity in regard to the peace process.

The Tamil media reported on Wednesday that Devananda had admitted that he was in touch with Karuna, over the phone. But all that he had done was to encourage the rebel to join the national democratic mainstream. Mowlana was quoted as saying that he helped Karuna as he had been a childhood friend.

Tamil Tigers walk out of talks over sanctuary for former rebel

Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels have withdrawn from talks with security forces amid growing tension over political and military backing for a renegade guerrilla leader.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam announced the withdrawal from regular meetings to protest alleged military backing to the breakaway guerrilla leader, Karuna.

The government had said it was ready to provide sanctuary to Karuna on humanitarian grounds, but maintained that the renegade had not contacted the authorities.

The Tamil Tigers say the government should choose between "war and peace".

The Tiger's have accused the military of sheltering Karuna, who led an unprecedented split in the Tamil Tiger ranks in March.

Opposition MP brings LTTE rebel leader Karuna to Colombo

Amidst conflicting reports about LTTE renegade Leader Karuna’s whereabouts, an Opposition United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Ali Zahir Mowlana who hails from the Eastern Province today revealed that he had brought Karuna and several other LTTE female cadres to Colombo.

After making this sudden announcement, the MP also tendered his resignation to party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. In his resignation letter to Wickremesinghe, Mowlana had claimed that he had brought Karuna to Colombo purely on humanitarian grounds. Meanwhile, the United Peoples Freedom Alliance Government is yet to react to this sudden turn of events.

Norway's top peace envoy expected amid fears of war in Sri Lanka

Associated Press, Thu June 24, 2004 00:23 EDT . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) A Norwegian peace envoy will travel to Sri Lanka - next week as part of efforts to salvage the island's peace process amid fears of renewed fighting between government forces and the Tamil Tiger rebels, officials said Thursday. The rebels began fighting in 1983 for a separate homeland for Sri Lanka - 's minority Tamils, accusing the majority Sinhalese of discrimination in education and jobs.

About 65,000 people were killed before Norway brokered a truce that halted the conflict in 2002. However, subsequent peace talks broke down a year later when the rebels withdrew over demands for more autonomy in the regions they control.

The cease-fire has held firm.

Armed group destroys NGO vehicles in Jaffna

Vehicles belonging to a Non-Governmental Organization engaged in de-mining work in the Jaffna peninsula, were completely or partly damaged when an unidentified armed gang attacked them early morning today. Military spokesman Col. Sumedha Perera said, Six of these vehicles were completely burnt. He also said, attackers, consisting of some twenty men, had assaulted all four security guards on duty at the venue before they set fire to the vehicles. He also said that the total damage is estimated at about US $ 100,000. Other vehicles, parked near the Nallur Kovil, had also been partly or completely damaged.

Government says military still watchful

J. S. Nalin in Colombo, June 23, 2004, 9.23 p.m.. Deputy Defence Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake today noted that despite the war being over in the country, the armed forces were still watchful. Sri Lankas military is continuing to be in good form, even though the country has been enjoying a two and a half year long ceasefire Agreement with the LTTE, Wickremanayake told reporters.

He made these comments during an inspection tour to the Colombo Military Hospital this morning. Commenting about the whereabouts of LTTE renegade Leader Karuna, the Deputy Defence Minister denied accusations that the military was giving protection to Karuna. He charged that mysterious groups were spreading such allegations against the military and the government to harm the on going peace process
