ACF workers demand handover of massacred NGO workers' bodies

[TamilNet, August 07, 2006 11:39 GMT]

The humanitarian workers of the French NGO, Action Contre la Faim (Action Against Hunger, ACF) have urged the support of all NGO workers to excert pressure to release the bodies of the massacred Tamil workers in Muthur, NGO sources said. Fifteen Tamil NGO workers were allegedly massacred by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers who entered Muthur town after the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fighters returned to their original positions Friday midnight after launching a 3-day-long counter offensive following Sri Lanka Army offensive towards Maavilaru.

Fifteen Tamil workers were shot and killed at point-blank range, according to initial reports from Muthur Saturday.

The France based NGO has said it would bring to light the tragic incident.

Action Against Hunger (ACF), with 25 years of expertise in nutrition, health, food security, water and sanitation, was working with water supply of Trincomalee town and adjoining areas in the district that comes under the Kantalai water treatment plant.

The ACF was working with rehabilitation of wells for drinking water and agriculture, Hygiene Education under Water and Sanitation programme, distribution of farming tools and equipment, promoting cultivation of rice, nutritional BP5 biscuits and food vouchers.

The ACF delivers programs in over 40 countries, specializing in emergency situations of war, conflict, and natural disasters and longer-term assistance to people in distress.

The percentage of population without access to drinking water in Sri Lanka, according to ACF, is 23%.

Clinton calls killing of Sri Lankan aid workers 'wanton act'

[08 Aug 2006]

NEW YORK (AFP)

Bill Clinton

Former US president Bill Clinton, who is a UN special envoy on tsunami recovery efforts in the Indian Ocean, expressed shock Monday at the killing of 16 aid workers in Sri Lanka.

"I was shocked and saddened to hear of the killings in Sri Lanka" of the workers "who I understand were providing assistance to tsunami survivors in the eastern part of the country", Clinton said.

The slain workers were staff in the Sri Lankan city of Muttur for the French aid group Action Against Hunger (Action Contre le Faim), which has decided to withdraw from the country because of the attack.

"I hope that this wanton act will not deter the critical efforts of aid workers in Sri Lanka, who have operated with courage and determination under difficult circumstances," added Clinton in a statement released by the UN's office of the special envoy for tsunami recovery, set up after the December 2004 disaster in the region.

"I offer my condolences to the victims and strongly urge the authorities to do everything possible to apprehend the perpetrators of this crime and bring them to justice," said Clinton.
