From the Principal St. John’s College to the Alumni and Friends of the College

Dear Johnians and Well Wishers,

The following pages contain information on the programme of adventure the College has taken in faith.

In providing education and facilities for the development of Rev N J Gnanaponrajah Children from the internally displaced camps, we believe we are investing in providing a life and a future for the children. 520 Internally displaced students have been given admission to St John’s with free education, and among them 222 have been given free hostel accommodation. This is a long term project (10‐15 yrs), and is reliant on sponsors from Old Boys, well‐wishers, philanthropists, and welfare organizations. We are sure that these students will receive a holistic education and will be assets in the future to the community and the country at large.

I would request you to take a little time to read this programme and give your support to help, making this programme a success. It is indeed a long term programme and therefore a consistent support is a necessity.

Governing Body of the College

Governing Body for Educational Institutions founded by the Church Missionary Society in Ceylon (No: 368, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7), which comes under the Church of Ceylon.

"Lux In Tenebris Lucet"

Colossal damages to the School during the war in 1995

"Lux In Tenebris Lucet"

Short History of the Institution

The school was founded in 1823 by the Church Missionary Society of London (England). The school had served children of all faith since then. The school opted out of the free education system in 1945 and became an assisted school. In 1961, when the schools take over act was implemented by the state, St. John’s opted to become a non fee levying institution, mainly to maintain its identity and educational standards – though it was a big struggle. However it was a great relief when state assistance came again in 1980 in the form of a grant for payment of teachers’ salaries, those who are in the government cadre only.

St. John’s has been seriously affected for the last two decades by the on going civil strife, including the wars in Jaffna. The school suffered colossal damages during IPKF Operations in 1987 and also in October 1995 during the mass exodus when all had to evacuate the campus. The school functioned in pockets at Kilinochchi, Chavakachcheri and Point Pedro during this time. Classes were conducted under trees and sheds without black boards and other basic facilities.

The school was re‐opened at the original location in May 1996 under trying circumstances. Before we could settle down, another displacement took place in May 2000 and had to function temporarily at Vaddukottai in the Jaffna College Campus. In spite of these set backs, the school continues to maintain high standards in studies and sports. The current enrolment is 2176 students, Academic staff 120 & Non Academic staff 39. Since we are state‐ Assisted Private School the salaries of the 70 Teachers are paid by the Government. The salary of the balance 50 academic staff and the 39 non academic staff are paid from the facilities fees levied from the students. We have to find donors for the renovation and reconstruction of buildings, especially, we are looking for helping hands to support the needy children those who came from IDP Camps in Wanni to whom we are planning to give full free education at St. John’s College.

Beneficiaries

The poor and underprivileged students in the internally displaced camps will be the direct beneficiaries of this project. Their families will benefit indirectly and in the long term. The program will impact those who were in war zone areas especially in the North. There is no religious discrimination. So far St John’s College has admitted 520 Internally Displaced School Children including 222 in the hostel.

Still the demand is more. Many parents every day are coming to school and calling over the phone from IDP Camps to seek admissions

Selection Criteria

The war affected children / youth in the areas of Wanni and especially those who are currently in the internally displaced camps in Vavunia are the target group. More specifically, selection will be based on those who lost their parents, single parent and those who are in lower poverty level and the evidence of pursuit of education in the past and desire to persevere in future education. An effort will be made to reach orphaned war victims. These criteria have been drawn up mainly by our project staff in consultation with volunteers who work with St John’s College Jaffna and are drawn from the operational region. Our plan is to provide hostel facility and maintain their education to orphans, single parent, lower poverty level children and the needy.

Impact

Students are going to be afforded the opportunity for a positive passage into adulthood with bright hopes of vocational usefulness. The St. John’s College environment offered in the class room studies and vocational training carried out will hopefully have a permanent impact on those attending children. We trust that many will encounter a profound educational transformation through this.

In keeping with the St John’s College ethos that has been mentoring as a high value, the numbers in all educational programmes will be kept at a level that will afford the possibility of personal care for each student. This is bound to have a permanent impact for good in the students’ lives as we have already seen in the college history that we have been doing over the years.

Residential Study Centre (Hostel)

The hostels will have rooms with desks to study, rooms for those who are staying overnight to sleep, bathing and cooking facilities. There will also be sports facilities which will be available for outside youth also to use. These will consist of a mini‐gym, indoor and outdoor games facilities.

Career Guidance

The staff and volunteers will give career guidance to our students as part of their mentoring and counselling roles. However special assistance in career guidance will be provided by other professionals.

Maintaining Standards

St. John’s College Jaffna has stressed the importance of mentoring which has resulted in warm ties of accountability within those involved with us. We are extremely strict with our volunteers and the exercise of discipline takes place all the time. A lack of integrity is particularly considered something serious. Owing to the strong sense of community accountability that has been fostered conscientiously and with great care and industry, those who are dishonest usually change to become honest or leave.

In addition to the above we have a Board to which we are accountable and our accounts are audited by the reputed audit firm.

We are in the process of formulating strict guidelines, following standards of Child Protection policy of UN, to ensure that abuse of those in our care is prevented
