Tamil club's alleged links to terrorism concern officials

The University of Waterloo has taken three steps to address the news that one of its clubs may have past links to an international terrorist organization.

According to a media advisory released Monday, UW, in full partnership with the UW Federation of Students, has engaged a national accounting firm to conduct a complete forensic audit of the Waterloo Tamil Students Association. The accountants will begin that process immediately.

UW will also begin immediately to conduct its own thorough review of policies and procedures regarding overseas placements for students enrolled in UW's co-operative education program.

And a small task group of senior UW officials is being created to facilitate and oversee these two important reviews.

"There are controls on all of the university's clubs, and all of the clubs' accounts go through our Federation of Students office," explained Martin Van Nierop, of UW's public affairs office. "We're confident we have good controls in place, but if it turns out (rules) weren't followed, we may have to take action.

"Right now we're looking at how we could best do that."

Last week three former University of Waterloo engineering students and one current student were charged in connection with an alleged terrorism plot that involved an attempt to purchase weapons, bribery, smuggling, money laundering and aid to the Tamil Tigers -- a listed terrorist organization -- channelled through charity groups.

Suresh Sriskandarajah, Ramanan Mylvaganam, Thirukumaran Sivasubramaniam and Thirukumaran Sinnathamby were arrested by the RCMP, who received information from U.S. authorities.

the Waterloo Tamil Students Association at UW in the last few years, Van Nierop confirmed.

But he added, it's nearly impossible for school officials to monitor the day-to-day conversations taking place between university club members.

"We have 160 clubs... there are limits to what we can do, short of putting someone in the room during their meetings," he said.

But, he added, it's unfair to link the Tamil campus club with the current controversy.

The club has done a lot of charity work, including efforts after the tsunami that hit southeast Asia on Dec. 26, 2004, Van Nierop said.

"After the tsunami, the Tamil students association, through the Federation of Students, helped raise money for World Vision and the Red Cross," he said. "It's unfair to label them because of what's going on."

Van Nierop also said university officials aren't overly concerned the connection between the school and the men charged will damage its reputation. "This university has an excellent reputation that will stand above this incident."

இதையே பாக்கிஸ்தான் காறனோ, பங்காளியோ செய்தால் இஸ்லாம் தீவிரவாதம் எண்டும் சொல்லுவார்கள்... சொல்வதுக்கு ஒரு சாட்டு இருந்தால் அவர்களுக்கு போதும்.... தாங்கள் தப்பிக்கொள்ள தமிழர்களில் சிலர் மற்றவர்கலை நொக்கி கையை காட்டி அவர்கள் பயங்கரவாதிகள் எண்று சொல்பவர்களும் உண்டு.... ஆனால் மேற்குலகம் அவர்களையும் பயங்கரவாதிகள் பட்டியலில்தான் சேர்த்து இருக்கின்றது என்பதை புரியாமலே....! இதுக்கு ஒரே காரணம் அவர்களின் நிறம் என்பதும் புரியாமலே....!
