கனடாவிலுள்ள தமிழர்கள் பலரும் ஒரு நூதன மோசடி வலைக்குள் சிக்க வைக்கப்பட்ட சம்பவம் அண்மைக்காலமாகவே இடம்பெற்று வருகின்றது.

கனடிய மத்திய காவல்துறையிலிருந்து பேசுகின்றோம். உங்களுடைய குடிவரவு விசாரனை சம்பந்தமான ஒரு விண்ணப்பத்தை நீங்கள் கடந்த காலத்தில் பூர்த்தி செய்யவில்லை. இந்த இணைப்பை குடிவரவு அதிகாரிக்கு மாற்றுகின்றேன் என மாற்றப்படுகின்றது.

சில வருடங்களாக கனேடியர்களை குறி வைத்து நடத்தப்படும் மோசடி .

தினமும் ஊடகங்களில் எச்சரிக்கைகள் வந்துகொண்டுதான் இருக்கு .

தமிழ் மிரார் கனேடியர்களை தமிழர்களாக மாற்றிவிட்டது .

“Sir, this seems kind of unusual,” John Walsh found himself saying over the phone to someone he thought was an agent from the Canadian Revenue Agency.

The Brampton man had found an automated message left on his voicemail earlier that day, informing him the CRA planned to initiate legal proceedings against his name unless he could pay the $5,000 he owed.

So he called back.

“When someone says you’re going to be arrested in 24 hours and to call back, you have a tendency to act on that,” said Welsh.

What followed was an almost three-hour long cell phone call, starting with a series of threats. If he couldn’t come up with the money, Welsh’s bank accounts would be frozen, a lien would be taken on his house, and prosecutors would hand him a maximum penalty of 7 years in jail and a $75,000 fine. He’d even have his child taken away, said the agent.

“I was terrified,” Walsh admitted.

The agent remained on the phone with Walsh as he drove to pick up his mother and brought her to the bank to borrow the money he needed. He then instructed Walsh to bring his mother back home, and go to the nearest store.

“He said… buy all of the iTunes gift cards that they have.”

At this point, Walsh asked the agent why a representative of a government agency was asking him to buy iTunes gift cards.

“He said because it’s Canada Revenue Agency, all of your assets as of now are frozen. You cannot use your debit card, you cannot use your credit cards. You gotta use cash, and the only way you can get me cash here is that we have a deal worked out here with Apple iTunes whereby you can get their cards and we can get the money out of them through that.”

To the reluctance of the cashier, Walsh cleared Shoppers’ stock of the $100 iTunes gift cards. They only had seven. Back inside the car, the agent told Walsh to scratch the back of the cards and read out the serial numbers to him. Once he’d done that, he was instructed to find 42 more cards.

With hands shaking and eyes watering, a terrified Walsh went inside a Metro grocery store in the same parking lot and counted out 42 more cards. But this time, a cashier noticed something was wrong.

“The manager comes over and leans in and says ‘sir, are you okay?’ and I said ‘no’. And he said ‘are you in danger?’ and I said ‘this is being recorded.’”

The manager then asked Walsh if he should call police, and Walsh said yes.

“When the police told me it was a scam, I almost melted. I almost fell to the floor with tears. I was sobbing.”

Police called Apple and had the cards cancelled, and Shoppers’ Drug Mart returned Walsh’s money a few hours later.

Walsh isn’t the first to be the target of a scam involving iTunes gift cards. Just last week, Durham police issued a warning to the public after a 66-year-old Oshawa woman was defrauded for more than $12,000 when scammers who also claimed to be from the CRA demanded payment in iTunes gift cards.

It wasn’t until the victim was targeted a second time that police were notified about a confused elderly woman trying to purchase a large number of cards at a Bowmanville Walmart.

வந்த புதிதில், பெற்றோல் நிலையத்தில், இரவு 12:50 போல் சொல்லி வைத்தது போல் மகா அலுப்பு தர ஒரு வெள்ளை வரும். நாம விளக்க, ஏதாவது நீளமாக சொன்னாலும், நமட்டு சிரிப்புடன், ஒத்தைச் சொல்லுடன் வெட்டியாடிப் போட்டு பதிலுக்கு மல்லுக் கட்டுவான். என்ன, பால் ஏன் உந்தளவு விலை, பிஸ்கட் ஏன் இப்படி விலை என்றது தான் பிரச்சனை. 

ஒரு நாள் தாங்கமுடியவில்லை, 'டேய்... என்று தொடங்கி... செந்தமிழில் உள்ள அத்தனை அர்சனைகளையும் பொழிய, ஓடிவிட்டான். பிறகு நான் நின்றால் வருவது இல்லை.

அன்னிய மொழிகளில மோசமாக திட்டினால், கோப உணர்வை முகம் காட்டாது.
