அதேபோல, 'Asoka and the Decline of the Mauryas - Romila Thapar, Third Edition '- - பக்கம் 20 இல், புத்தர் இறந்த இரண்டு நம்பகமான ஆண்டுகள் என கிமு 483 மற்றும் கிமு 486 ஐ கிட்டத்தட்ட சமமான தகுதியுடன் தருகிறது.

"இருபதாம் ஆண்டு ஆட்சி நடைபெறும் போது, தேவனின் பிரியமானவன் என்ற பியதசி (அசோகர்) இந்த இடத்திற்கு சென்று தரிசனம் செய்து வணங்கினார். இதுவே சக்யமுனி [சாக்கியர்களின் முனிவரான] புத்தர் பிறந்த இடம் என்பதால், இங்கே குதிரையைத் தாங்கிய ஒரு கல் செய்யப்பட்டு, ஒரு கல் தூண் அமைக்கப்பட்டது. இறைவன் (புத்தர்) இங்கே பிறந்ததால், இந்த லும்பினி கிராமத்திற்கு வரி விலக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டது; கிராமம் எட்டிலொரு பகுதி மட்டுமே வழங்க வேண்டும் என அரசாணை பிறப்பிக்கப்பட்டது."
இந்த வினோதமான பதிவு, 1896 இல் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டு சரியாகப் பாதுகாக்கப்பட்டது / இந்தப் பதிவு அரச கட்டளையால் செதுக்கப்பட்டதாகக் கூறவில்லை என்பதைக் கவனிக்கலாம். அசோகரின் வருகையையும் அந்தச் சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் அவர் வழங்கிய உதவிகளையும் நினைவுகூரும் வகையில், உள்ளூர் அதிகாரியால் இது வரைவு செய்யப்பட்டு செதுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என நம்பப்படுகிறது.?
Part: 116 / APPENDIX – "The Buddha and his Mahaparinirvana"
Most scholars, including Wilhelm Geiger and Romila Thapar, discard the year 544 B.C. as untenable. Wilhelm Geiger used the year 483 B. C. as the year on which the Buddha’s death took place, in the first edition of his translation of the Mahavamsa which was published in the year 1912. The fifth print of the same was published in the year 2018 by the Buddhist Cultural Centre – Sri Lanka. This is the copy referenced in this study. The same year 483 B.C. is used in this fifth edition too, as it was in the first print about 108 years ago. The year 483 B.C. as the Buddha’s year of death was based on the articles by Dr. Fleet as given below. There are other articles also by Dr. Fleet on this subject, and the following three articles are cited below.

Romila Thapar, Reference 'Asoka and the Decline of the Mauryas - Romila Thapar, Third Edition '- page 20, gives 483 B.C. and 486 B.C. as two credible years of Buddha’s death with almost equal merit.
In Nepal, the Lumbini Pillar Edict is known as the Rummindei Pillar Inscription, one of his Minor Pillar Edicts. The Lumbini Pillar Edict recorded that Ashoka traveled to the birthplace of Buddha [Lumbini is where the Buddha was born] sometime after the twentieth year of his reign and made offerings personally. Then he got a stone pillar put up and the residents of that area lowered their taxes. There was a solar eclipse before he set out on that pilgrimage, as per Reference 'Asoka and the Decline of the Mauryas - Romila Thapar, Third Edition'. The eclipse of the sun is calculated to be on 249 B. C. We are not sure of the number of years after that eclipse the King Asoka set out on the pilgrimage. If he had set out on the same year as the solar eclipse, then King Asoka must have started on the pilgrimage on the year 249 B. C. Therefore, the Buddha’s Parinirvana must have had occurred on 487 B.C., 249+218+20. If he had set out two years after the eclipse then the Buddha’s Parinirvana must have occurred on 485 B. C.,249-2+218+20. This is correct only if the coronation of Asoka took place two hundred and eighteen years after the death of Buddha, as is given in the Chronicles of Ceylon, the Dipavamsa and the Mahavamsa.
The facsimile of the above mentioned Minor Pillar Edict, Rummindei pillar inscription in Lumbini, as given by Vincent A. Smith, page 222 of Reference 'Asoka the Buddhist Emperor of India, by Vincent A Smith, Third edition 1919', is given below:
" By His Sacred and Gracious Majesty the King when he had been consecrated twenty years, having come in person and reverence having been done inasmuch as ' : Here was born Buddha, the sage of the Sakyas" a stone bearing a horse was caused to be made and a stone pillar was erected. Inasmuch as " Here the Holy One was born," the village of Lummini was released from religious cesses and required to pay [only] one-eighth as land revenue." [This curious record, discovered in 1896 and perfectly pre- served / It will be observed that the record does not claim to have been incised by royal command. Presumably it was drafted and engraved by a local authority to commemorate Asoka's visit and the favours conferred by him on that occasion.]
