The Sri Lankan Navy has put in place an underwater defence system between Kachchatheevu and Neduntheevu (Delft Island) as part of efforts to curtail the movement of Sea Tigers of the LTTE. A communication about laying of sea mines was sent to the Indian Navy, the Indian media reported.

Talisman, the BAE Systems' developed unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), has achieved its latest capability breakthrough, by becoming the first UUV to successfully fire and control weapons at sea during trials off the South Coast of England.

The first remote sea launch of the Archerfish mine disposal system from Talisman was successfully completed during the trials, witnessed by a US Navy delegation. The mine neutraliser then acquired Talisman with the subsequent simulation of target eradication. In another deployment, also from the Talisman UUV, Archerfish successfully identified and acquired BAE Systems' versatile exercise mine system (VEMS) demonstrating the extensive capability of the two combined products.

The development of Talisman has been hailed as an example of BAE Systems approach to rapid prototyping, a process that involves design, development and testing to take place concurrently, rather than the more traditional linear development process. It is a core requirement of the UK Ministry of Defence's Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) and the recently announced Defence Technology Strategy.

"Rapid prototyping is a culture where you achieve 90% of the solution at 10% of the cost and do it quickly. We have leveraged best practice from across BAE Systems to move from programme sign off to in-water trials in 364 days. Traditionally this would have taken about five years," explained UUV project manager, Andy Tonge. "Talisman is an example of how rapid prototyping can enable industry to respond far more effectively to customer requirements."

Developed by BAE Systems Underwater Systems business, Talisman is the world's first attack multi-role UUV with the proven ability to deploy multiple weapon and communication payloads. The integration of Archerfish also makes it the first fully autonomous mine countermeasure (MCM) system.

BAE Systems is the premier transatlantic defence and aerospace company delivering a full range of products and services for air, land and naval forces, as well as advanced electronics, information technology solutions and customer support services. With 88,000 employees worldwide, BAE Systems' sales exceeded 12 billion pounds (US22 billion dollars) in 2005, excluding the Group's former interest in Airbus.

Talisman ‘M’

Is approximately 4.5 m long by 1.7 m wide, weighs around 1,000 kg, can carry payloads of 500 kg or more and can operate at depths of up to 300 m. Propulsion and manoeuvre control is provided by four Seaeye SMS ducted-fan thrusters which drive it at speeds up to 5 knots. The thrusters enable it to hover, move vertically and turn in its own length. The vehicle is designed to operate with a high degree of accuracy throughout its autonomous missions.

Saft’s Lithium-ion Power System

Can deliver up to 24 hours of continuous performance to the Talisman in its basic configuration. In a recent development the batteries can be recharged on the surface by an integral miniature 3hp diesel engine, extending its range and performance significantly. As a recognized world leader in advanced battery systems, Saft is an existing supply partner of BAE Systems. Among other contracts it supplies batteries for the company’s Sting Ray torpedo.

High performance

Each Talisman ‘M’ vehicle is equipped with two or four battery pods, depending on its application. Lithium-ion is the preferred technology because of its fast charge times, high energy capacity, excellent power/volume ratio and its long service life without maintenance.

Each of the 320 V - 45 Ah batteries, used on the Talisman ‘M’, will be made up of Saft VL45E cells. Each battery has an integrated management system which equalizes the charging process across the cells and provides safety monitoring and security. It also feeds battery data to the vehicle’s main on-board computer.
