ஒன்றாரியோவில் கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சியின் வெற்றி காரணமாகத் தமது மூலோபாயத்தை மாற்றப்போவதில்லையென மாகாண லிபரல் அரசு தெரிவித்தது.

நடந்து முடிந்த பொதுத் தேர்தலில் ஒன்றாரியோவில், கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சியும், என்டீபீயும் பாரிய வெற்றியைப் பெற்றுள்ளபோதிலும், தமது மூலோபாயத்தை மாற்றப்போவதில்லையென மாகாண லிபரல் கட்சி முதல்வர் டோல்ற்றன் மக்கின்றி தெரிவித்தார்.

லிபரல் கட்சியின் கோட்டையெனக் கருதப்பட்ட ரொறன்றோவில், லிபரல் கட்சி இந்த முறை ஆறு தொகுதிகளில் மட்டும் வெற்றி பெற்றது.

நடுவில் உள்ள லிபரல் கட்சியைத் தவிர்த்துவிட்டு, இடதுசாரிப் போக்குடைய என்டீபீ அல்லது, வலதுசாரிப் போக்குடைய கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சிக்கு ஆதரவாக ஒன்றாரியோ மக்கள் வாக்களித்தார்களெனக் கூறப்படுவதை முதல்வர் நிராகரித்தார். அதனை ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியாதெனவும், அது ஒன்றாரியோ மக்களைப் பாகுபடுத்திப் பார்க்கும் நடவடிக்கையெனவும் டோல்ற்றன் மக்கின்றி தெரிவித்தார். ஒன்றாரியோ மக்களுக்குப் பொருத்தமான ஒரு நிலைப்பாட்டை எடுப்பதற்குத் தமது கட்சி முற்பட்டு வந்துள்ளதென அவர் கூறினார். பிரதம மந்திரி ஸ்ரீபன் ஹாப்பருக்கு அவர் வாழ்த்துக்களைத் தெரிவித்தார்.

ஒன்றாரியோவின் மக்களின் நிலைப்பாடு, தமது கட்சிக்கு ஆதரவானதென்பதை, கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சியின் வெற்றி காட்டுவதாக மாகாணத்தின் புறோகிறசிவ் கொன்சவேற்றிவ் தலைவர் ரிம் ஹ_டாக் தெரிவித்தார்.

ஒன்ராறியோ புறோகிறசிவ் கன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சியின் அங்கத்துவ மாநாடு இந்த வார இறுதியில் நடைபெறுகின்றது

புறோகிறசிவ் கன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சியின் சுமார் 1500 பிரதிநிதிகள், இந்த வார இறுதியில் டொரன்டோவில் நடைபெறும் ஒன்ராறியோ புறோகிறசிவ் கன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சியின் அங்கத்துவ மாநாட்டில் பங்கேற்கின்றனர்.

எதிர்வரும் இலையுதிர் காலத்தில் நடைபெறவுள்ள தேர்தலுக்கான கட்சியின் விஞ்ஞாபனம் இந்த மாநாட்டின் மூலமாக வெளியிடப்படுமென ஒன்ராறியோ புறோகிறசிவ் கன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சியின் தலைவர் ற்ரிம் ஹூடாக் தெரிவித்தார்.

Changebook என அழைக்கப்படும் இந்தத் திட்டத்தின் மூலமாக, 2003ம் ஆண்டு முதல் ஒன்ராறியோவில் ஆதிக்கத்திலிருக்கும் லிபரல் கட்சியினரின் ஆசனங்களைக் கைப்பற்றலாமென புறோகிறசிவ் கன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சி நம்புகின்றது.

இதுவரை 95 வேட்பாளர்கள் போட்டியிடுவதற்குத் தயாராக இருப்பதாகவும், ஜூன் மாதத்தில் வேட்பாளர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை இன்னும் அதிகரிக்கும் என்றும் ற்ரிம் ஹூடாக் கூறினார்.

நேற்று ஆரம்பமான அங்கத்துவ மாநாட்டில் உரையாற்றிய ற்ரிம்ஹூடாக், அடுத்த மாகாண அரசாங்கம் தயாராக இருப்பதாக சுட்டிக்காட்டினார்.

மே 27 முதல் 29ம் திகதிவரை டொரன்டோ கொங்கிரஸ் சென்ரரில் இந்த மாநாடு நடைபெறுகின்றது.

அதேவேளை, மாகாணத் தேர்தல், ஒக்டோபர் மாதம் 6ம் திகதி நடைபெறவுள்ளது.

அக்கட்சியின் தலைவரும் தற்போதைய எதிர்க்கட்சித் தலைவராக விளங்கும் ரிம் ஹ_டெக் ரொரறன்ரோவில் நடைபெற்ற நிகழ்வு ஒன்றில் உரையாற்றும்போது தெரிவித்தார்.

மாகாணத்தின் சுகாதார சேவைகளைச் சட்டத்திற்கு முரணாக பயன்படுத்துவோரை சிறைக்கு அனுப்புதல், வரி அதிகரிப்பினை நிறுத்துதல் போன்றவற்றிற்கு முன்னுரிமை வழங்கப்படும் என அவர் கூறினார்.

மாகாண முத்லவர் மக்குயின்ற்றியனால் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்ட HST வரியினை heating மற்றும் hydro இற்கு தளர்த்துவது, சூரியக் கல மின் ஆற்றலை விளைவிக்கும் பொறியினை நிறுவுவதற்காக கொரிய நிறுவனத்துடன் செய்துகொள்ளப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஒப்பந்தத்தினை ரத்துச்செய்தல் போன்றன நடைமுறைப்படுத்தப்படும் என அவர் அறிவித்திருக்கிறார்.

இதேவேளை, கொன்சவேட்டிவ் கட்சியின் தேர்தல் கொள்கை விளக்கவுரை குறித்த 'Changebook' என அழைக்கப்படும் முழுமையான அறிக்கை இன்று வெளியிடப்படவுள்ளது.

Ontario Conservatives pledge income-tax splitting for families

- Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak is wooing middle-class voters with a tax break pledge aimed at all families. The measure – borrowed from the federal Conservatives’ playbook – would allow families to split, or share, up to $50,000 of their household income for tax purposes. The Tories estimate this promise would provide over $400 in tax relief to a typical family.

- Mr. Hudak is also pledging to provide relief for middle-class families with a 5-per-cent tax cut on the first $75,000 of income.

இப்சொஸ் றீட் நிறுவனத்தின் கருத்துக் கணிப்பில், ரிம் ஹீடாக் (Tim Hudak) தலைமையிலான புறோகிறசிவ் கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சி, 40 சதவீத மக்களாதரவைப் பெற்றிருந்தது. இவ்வாண்டின் ஆரம்பத்தில் நடத்தப்பட்ட கருத்துக் கணிப்பிலும், இரண்டு சதவீதம் அதிகமான மக்கள் ஆதரவை அந்தக் கட்சி பெற்றுள்ளது. லிபரல் கட்சிக்கு ஆதரவு ஒரு சதவீதம் குறைந்து, 34 சதவீதமாகியுள்ளது.

ரொறன்றோ பெரும்பாகத்தில், லிபரல் கட்சி 39 சதவீத ஆதரவையும், புறோகிறசிவ் கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சி, 38 சதவீத ஆதரவையும் பெற்றுள்ளன.

ஒன்றாரியோவின் கிழக்கில், புறோகிறசிவ் கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சி, 47 சதவீத ஆதரவையும், லிபரல் கட்சி 31 சதவீத ஆதரவையும் பெற்றுள்ளன. ஒன்றாரியோவின் வட பகுதியில் லிபரல் கட்சி, 37 சதவீத ஆதரவையும், புறோகிறசிவ் கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சி 36 சதவீத ஆதரவையும் பெற்றுள்ளன.

ஒன்டாரியோவில்; லிபரல் கட்சியின் செல்வாக்கு குறைந்துள்ள போதிலும் அதன் தலைவரான டோல்டன் மக்கின்றியே வாக்காளர்கள் விரும்பும் முதல்வராகத் தொடர்கிறார்.

குலோப் அன்ட் மெயில் பத்திரிகைக்காக கடந்த வாரம் நானோஸ் (Nanos) அமைப்பினால் நடத்தப்பட்ட கருத்துக் கணிப்பின் போது 29 சதவீதமானவர்கள் தங்களுக்குப் பிடித்த முதல்வர் டோல்டன் மக்கின்றி எனத் தெரிவித்திருந்தார்கள்.

புரோகிரசிவ் கொன்சர்வேட்டிவ் கட்சித் தலைவர் Tim Huda கை 25 சதவீதமானவர்களும், என்டிபித் தலைவர் Andrea Horwath தை 15 சதவீதமானவர்களும் முதல்வராக வருவதற்குப் பொறுத்தமானர்கள் எனத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்திருந்தார்கள்.

தங்களுக்குப் பிடித்தமான முதல்வர் என 29 சதவீதமானவர்கள் டோல்டன் மக்கின்றியை தேர்ந்தெடுத்திருந்தாலும் கடந்த பத்தாண்டுகளாக இல்லாத அளவுக்கு அவரது லிபரல் கட்சி மக்கள் ஆதரவினை இழந்துள்ளது.

லிபரல் கட்சியின் செல்வாக்கு 31.9 சதவீதமாக இருந்த போது புரோகிரசிவ் கொன்சர்வேட்டிவ் கட்சியின் செல்வாக்கு 35.4 சதவீதமாகவும், என்டிபியின் செல்வாக்கு 22.8 சதவீதமாகவும் இருந்தன.

EXCLUSIVE: An interview with Hon. Dalton McGuinty

TamilCanadian is pleased to bring you exclusive interviews with leaders of the provincial political parties in Ontario. The upcoming Ontario provincial election to be held on October 6th, 2011 is crucial for an estimated 250,000 Tamil Canadians living in Ontario.

Hon. Dalton McGuinty, Premier and Leader of the Liberal Party of Ontario sat down for an exclusive interview with TamilCanadian.com. The interview was conducted by Sarujan Kanapathipillai and contains much insight as to what the Tamil Canadian community can expect from a possible Liberal victory on October 6th, 2011.

TamilCanadian.com has contacted leaders of the other political parties and intends to conduct similar interviews with them pending their availability.

The following are excerpts from an interview.

Sarujan: Thank you Premier for taking the time to speak to TamilCanadian.com today.

Premier: It is my pleasure. Thank you.

Sarujan: In the first half of 2009 there were Tamil protests that filled the streets of University Street as well as Queens Park. During that time you came on public television and you indicated that you were understanding of the protesters and there was a debate in the house for a motion to be passed. It was not a popular decision at that time to support the protesters; you did it anyways. Some claimed it was a vote grab. What was the reason, why did you do that?

Premier: Well, I felt for Tamil Canadians living here in Ontario and I knew it was a difficult time for them and they had families, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, cousins and good friends who were caught up in violence and I thought if there is any country in the world where you should be able to give express to this concern; it ought to be Canada and surely must be inside my own province of Ontario. Besides that, the protests were peaceful and orderly and some people said that it well it’s creating an inconvenience. Mahatma Gandhi was a man of inconvenience, Martin Luther King Jr. Was a man of inconvenience, so I think it’s only right that we support people who find themselves in difficult circumstances, painful circumstances and who want to draw the world’s attention to something terrible that is happening in another part o the world and I think my responsibility as premier is to give expression to those good values and aspirations on the part of all Ontarians and that’s what I was doing. And I guess the other thing that made me a bit more personally kind of understanding this is you may know my daughter worked for years for Lanka just after the tsunami and she travelled the country a little bit and she fell in love with Sri Lanka. She very much enjoyed the experience there. So, it’s..We’re touched by what happens in Sri Lanka, we’re touched by the challenges faced by the Tamil community and that’s the way it should be; in Ontario we’re connected to every part of this globe and if somebody in another part of the world is hurting; we feel it. It is not an academic kind of exercise for us; we actually feel it; we have people here who are hurting. So when the Tamil community decided to they’re going to stand up and make a statement; I thought it was important for us to say “ You have every right to make that statement”. By the way, I am supporting you in that statement.

Sarujan: Thank you. A large reason part of why the protests happened was that the Tamil community felt that there were gross civilian deaths in Sri Lanka and that there were war-crimes being committed in SriLanka. So, they took it to the streets. Two years later, there has been a study released by the United Nations as well as a documentary by Channel 4 of UK that validate what these people went out to the streets for; that there appeared to be war crimes committed and that up to 40,000people may have been killed at the last stages of the war. While this is a federal issue and this is not a provincial issue- as an Ontarian how do you feel about Canada being fairly silent on this issue when countries like the United States have been more vocal even though Canada has the largest number of Sri Lankan Tamils outside of Sri Lanka?

Premier: I’m not going to speak to diplomatic relations and those kind of issues because that’s the responsibility of the federal government but I can always speak as premier of a province who is very proud of the Tamil Community presence here among Ontarians. There are outstanding concerns. Some very important and reliable objective information has been brought to light by the United Nations. I think civilised countries everywhere have a responsibility to take that into account when it comes into their dealings with Sri Lanka.

Sarujan: So, when the boat of about 500 Tamil refugee claimants came to the shores of British Columbia last year- there was quite bit of opposition by some- for these refugee claimants and while Canada has opened its door for hundreds of years; many felt that it was time that we closed these doors. [5.14 can’t understand]. A lot of these people have moved to Ontario or will be moving to Ontario- how do you feel about these refugee claimants coming here; do you think we should close our doors after having it open for so long?

Premier: I spoke out against the federal government’s position when it came to some of the language and some of the portrayals that they made of those people on those boats and I thought Canadians could be forgiven if they were under the impression that somehow these were all criminals and I recall how we had received- what were known as the “boat people” from Vietnam and I recall- I went to a funeral here in Ontario for a young man by the name of Vu Pham- he was a father of three beautiful boys- he was active in his church- active in sports for young people and he was killed in the line of duty as a police officer with the Ontario Provincial Police. He was a boat person. He came over here as a little boy- grew up here- became a police officer for us- and everyday he risked his life for us. So when we think about boat people- think about Vu Pham and what he did for us. He lost his life for us. So I think we need to be very careful about how we portray and how we caricature people who are coming here from other parts of the world. We are a country of great privilege. And my father taught me that when you are privileged- you have responsibility and I think we have got two special responsibilities:

Second thing is that important to say to the world- if you need a safe place some place where you will be accepted and respected and supported- that’s what Canada is. Now- we can’t bring in everybody from all around the world every day- we simply couldn’t cope- there are some limitations. But the fact of the matter is that I wouldn’t be here speaking to you today as premier of Ontario, if 150 years ago or so my family had not been allowed here; we were very poor, we couldn’t speak English, we had no real education but we came here and we found opportunity and when we found it- then we worked hard to help build this country as well.

I think that’s one of the beautiful aspects of our country- this openness, this receptivity, this welcoming attitude that we’ve had. Now, when you come here – you got a job to do right; you have to work hard- you have to be honest- you have to raise your kids well- make sure they get a good education- you have to go to work, pay your taxes and help us build up our communities. That’s kind of the quid-pro-quo but I think we have to be very careful about sending a signal to the world that somehow we’re going to do an about-face as a country and no longer be welcoming to people who find themselves in times of need.

First/One is to demonstrate to the world on a on-going basis that we are a place that proves that you can find strength in differences. We may be different but we get along because we have a lot more in common that by way of differences.

Sarujan: You spoke about strength in diversity- many people feel that similar to how having women in office have furthered women’s rights and have addressed some of the concerns, that we need to have a diverse group of people in office to address the multitude of challenges that Ontarians face, Canadians face and Torontonians face. In that light, during the federal election there were Tamil Candidates from the conservative party and NDP-The NDP candidate is now a MP and the Conservative candidate was very closet o winning. That time, many felt that the Liberal Party of Canada had taken for granted the Tamil Vote. Now we’re here at the provincial elections and there’s an NDP candidate and an Conservative candidate that is Tamil and there is no Tamil Liberal Candidate. Many have wondered why and wonder if the liberal party has taken the Tamil vote for granted.

Premier: Well-we have not and we’ll have to make sure that we do that next time. I am very proud of the relationship that we’ve had with the Tamil community both as a party, as a government and me personally. I am proud of the fact that my daughter spent a year working in Sri Lanka, I am proud of the statement that I made to help support the Tamil community in their time of need. I am proud of the financial support that we sent to Sri Lanka at the time of the post-tsunami cleanup that needed to be done there and the investment in new infrastructure and the like. IN an ideal world we would have representative of all our communities here at Queens Park. Maybe I should re=phrase that- it will be nice to have a representative of the Tamil community serving here at Queens Park and hopefully in the not-too distant future we will make that happen. But I think we have to be careful about assuming that only a Japanese Canadian can properly understand Japanese Canadian concerns and that only a woman can understand women’s concerns or only that a Tamil Canadian can understand Tamil Canadian concerns.

The honour of serving at Queens Park is that as elected- you have the responsibility and joy of representing everybody’s concerns. All the men, all the women, all the faiths, all the cultures, all the traditions, all the families. So, yes- we are going to keep working hard and I look forward to a day not too distant- future when we have Tamil Canadian who is running under the banner of the Ontario Liberal Party- Didn’t happen this time but I think most-Tamils will understand, if they check the record, and see the relationship we’ve had both me personally with the community and my government in terms of standing up for the community- I think they will recognize that- you’ve got somebody in there already fighting for the Tamils- he’s the Premier.

Sarujan: You’ve been in office for eight years- most of us when we been somewhere for two, three years especially after 8 years- you can look back and you can identify areas where you could of done something better. Is there any area that you feel that looking back- if you could do one thing differently- is there anything you would do?

Premier: Well- I am going to tell you a little story to answer that. When we we’re growing up- ten children at home it became obvious pretty early on to my father that his salary as a teacher was not going to be enough to feed all the family. So, we got into small enterprises ourselves. So, we shovelled snow, we cut grass- we sold firewood- we sold fruits and vegetables from a boat on a lake. We then began to buy small properties - fix them up and re-sell them. Then we bought a few properties and manage them together for the time being and then sell them. One of the things that my father did was that he decided that he was going to create a family motto for us and it was Latin and the family motto is”________________”. So one day I asked my dad “ What does that mean” and he said it means “Never Look Back”. So are there some things that I would probably preferred to have done differently? Yes. But I never spent any time looking back apart from drawing lessons and quickly turning to the future.

One of the lessons of the World Economy is: You’ve got to keep moving forward. If we stop to rest- the rest of the world continues to move forward. Another lesson of the global economy is you’re going to have to do some difficult things to grow stronger like adopt the HST, like re-build our electricity system. Not easy things to do and we try to manage all those in a way that are taken into account the concerns that families have. So we are discounting electricity bills by ten percent- every bill for example. We’ve cut income taxes by $350 for the average Ontario family. But those are the kinds of things we need to do together to grow stronger.

Sarujan: Thank you for your time Premier McGuinty. Is there any last words you would like tell the Tamil Canadians watching this?

Premier: It’s been an honour working with the Tamil Canadian Community. I am delighted to have your presence here in Ontario. I thank you for your commitment to public education. I know it’s so important- whenever I’ve had the chance to talk to moms and dads in the Tamil community- they’ll tell me how they understand- how important it is for their children to work and do well in school. Thanks for all the support that you’ve given us well to help us improve the quality of our Health Care system- every family needs more than good schools- they need good health care. You hope you don’t need it but if you do need it- you want to make sure it’s there for you! So, we’ve got better education, smaller classes, higher graduation rates, and health care, we’ve got more doctors, and the shortest wait times in the country now. That’s enabled us as a well educated population and a healthy population to strengthen our economy. Since January, we’ve created more jobs here in Ontario than we have in the rest of the country and that wealth is helping us support our schools and health care; it’s kind of a virtual circle. So, I couldn’t do that without the support of Ontarians as a whole and the Tamil Community in particular. So I am proud of the Tamil community, Proud that they’ve chosen Ontario, proud that they’re raising their families here, starting their businesses here, contributing to the quality of our life here for all of us.

Canadian Tamils weigh in on this year's Ontario General Election

Tamils have had their voices heard on the federal level and on the international stage. With one week to go until voters select the next government of Ontario, Tamils want to be listened to in the Ontario Legislature at Queens Park.

“We are also conscious that the Tamil issue technically falls outside of the realm of provincial elections because it is a foreign policy issue for Canada,” said the NCCT National Director.

However, one candidate the organization does support is Liberal Toronto Centre Member of Provincial Parliament Glenn Murray for his dedication to the Tamils’ cause and self-determination.

“If we don’t get involved, then someone else will make decisions for us” - Neethan Shan

The 40th general election in Ontario Province will be held on October 6, 2011. It will elect members to the 40th Legislative Assembly of Ontario. This time, two Tamil candidates, namely Neethan Shan, and Shan Thayaparan are contesting in Scarborough- Rouge River and Markham-Unionville ridings respectively.

Charles Devasagayam interviewed both of them in order to get their views on their standing. Here are the views of Neethan Shan.

Charles Devasagayam: We congratulate you for running in the up coming Provincial election on October 6th. Could you explain the reasons which inspired you to contest in the up coming election?

Neethan Shan: I have been a community activist and I am also involved in politics for a number of years. What made me get interested in politics was my awareness that many of our day to day decisions are made by politicians and the more we stay away from it, the less likely the decisions will reflect our needs.

Therefore, having worked as a youth worker, teacher and as a school Board Trustee, I feel that Educational policies for an example, need much more to be reflective of the needs of the diverse communities of our area and our province as well. So, such an interest in public policy, along with interest in being part of political decision making, inspired me to get in to politics. Because, if we don’t get involved then someone else will be making decisions for us.

CD: What made you to choose the Scarborough-Rouge River riding?

N.S: Well, I live in Scarborough - Rouge River with my wife and newly born, two months old son. I have been working in Scarborough-Rouge River for a number of years. I started off my first job as a youth worker in this riding at two schools in Malvern - Mother Theresa Catholic Secondary School and Lester B Pearson Collegiate. I have been involved in different community activities in this area. I am also in the Board of Malvern Community Coalition as a Co-Chair and also work at Morningside Heights Residence Association as Treasurer and Board Member.

So, this area is very familiar to me. I also ran as a City councillor candidate in the area which has given me the basic support to begin with. Also, the Tamil community in this area is very significant. They know my track record of leadership as well, which is also helpful. That’s why I have chosen this riding.

CD: What are the pressing needs of this riding or community and how do you intend to address them?

N.S: In general, this riding is not much different from many other ridings in terms of affordability. People feel that the money they make is static whereas all expenses whether its insurance, TTC fare, gas price or hydro rate etc. are going up. So, the affordability has been an issue in this area as well.

This is mostly a low income family area. Secondly, transit is a big issue in this neighbourhood, in this riding particularly, because many of them work far away from home and having to take public transit, which takes 2 to 3 hours in transit, takes a lot of time away from the families and recreation.

The third major issue is employment which is common in many ridings. Many people find themselves either unemployed or underemployed or precariously employed, in terms of temporary agencies and so on. So, we need a better way to retain our jobs in Ontario. It is also necessary to have sustainable good green jobs for people, whether they are new comers, immigrants or students, who have finished degrees here. So, these are the major issues in this area.

Beyond those issues, I think Scarborough has been neglected at all levels of governments and Scarborough needs a strong leadership who would stand up and voice the concerns regardless of partisan politics, to be able to advocate for Scarborough as a community, to make sure that we get the chance, we get the services and resources that we need in this particular part of the province.

C.D: Out of three major parties why did you choose to run under the New Democratic Party, N.D.P?

N.S: The NDP is a Progressive Party which ideally matches with my work in the past as well my beliefs. I believe in Social Justice and Economic Justice. As someone who actually works in the field, as a full time person as well, NDP’s policies make sure that no one is left behind. Making sure that people come first and voicing for the rights of the workers, students and ethnic communities. It is something that I admire.

I think we need to have policies to make sure the economic prosperity of the province does not go into a few hands, but is shared among everyone. Because everybody has

contributed to the economic growth of this province and the country. I am also inspired by leaders like Tommy Douglas and Jack Layton who actually pioneered many fights for social justice.

C.D: What is your party’s major platform in this election?

N.S: Our platform is basically to make life affordable for our ordinary families. Make it more affordable by giving them better jobs, giving them more income and at the end of the day through cutting the HST from Hydro, home Heating and so on. Also to give them money through freezing tuition fees, freezing transit fares etc., so that they will have more money to spend on other basic needs at home. It’s a two-pronged approach. First is to address the jobs situation. Second is to look at making life affordable on an every day basis.

C.D: Why do you think you are qualified to run in this election, specially against an incumbent who has been there for a while?

N.S: Well, I have been the social justice person for a number of years. I have also been an active member of the community and the community is looking for leadership that will actually be on the ground; that engages the grass root communities. Community is actually looking for someone who realizes the potential of Scarborough.

So, the incumbent has been there for over two decades plus the Liberals have been there for two terms and people are getting tired. They are getting tired of status quo politics. Tired of politicians who have lost touch of what the ground realities are.

As a person who believes in community development and who does a lot of grass root organizing, they recognize my suitability as one who can get things done. It is for a fresh and energized new leadership that people are starting to resonate to. It is for NDP with Andrea Horwarth’s leadership that people are starting to resonate and feel that what ever our policies are, they are real and grounded on absolute realities of people.

C.D: What is the ethnic composition of this riding? Why do you think the Tamil Canadians should vote for you or N.D.P?

N.S: The biggest proportion of ethnic composition is Chinese (Asian) origin, South Asian population is the second with Tamils making a big chunk of it, African – Indo Caribbean form the third group. All these communities together who form about 92 percent and called visible minorities, are in this riding.

So, it’s a vibrant and diverse community. Even with this diverse community, there are first and third generations. The diversity reflects beyond ethno racial diversity in terms of immigration history but, also socio, economics and other forms of diversity as well.

In terms of Tamil population why they should vote for NDP is that NDP has been very receptive and responsive to the needs of the Tamil Community. Unfortunately our Leader Jack Layton passed away untimely. Under his leadership, there has been a tremendous amount of relationship building and dialogue that happened within the two parties and also that translated into provincial politics. The provincial leaders have been very close as well.

In addition to that, we know that many of the issues that I talked about, the Jobs, affordability, transit, and tuition fees, these are issues for the Tamil community too. So, the NDP platform certainly resonate most, if not all communities, including the Tamil Community.

C.D: Finally what would you like to say to the Tamil voters in Ontario?

N.S: I would like to say that we have a historical opportunity again, to come together, work together and get a leader from the Tamil Community who can actually serve the diverse population. Its just not enough to have a Tamil person be elected but, have a Tamil Canadian who can represent the diversity of the Scarborough-Rouge River riding, who can bring pride to that particular community. Because, its through this representation that those communities are also seen.

So, if you have a Tamil Canadian who can really represent a wide spectrum of people, who has knowledge and skills to do, please support that Candidate and I think I have the respect of the Tamil community and I also had the support and help of the Tamil community in the past many years and hoping that will continue.

I will continue to make the community proud. Regardless of the out come of the elections, I always work with the community and be part of it. Hoping that kind of support and engagement of community in my political as well as social activities will continue.

“I understand the people’s need and I have a vision for the Markham- Unionville riding and the people who live here” - Shan Thayaparan

Here are the views of Shan Thayaparan:

Charles Devasagayam: We congratulate you for running in the up coming Provincial election on October 6th. Could you explain the reasons which inspired you to contest in the up coming election?

Shan Thayaparan: Yes, there are quiet a few reasons. Many are personal. But, as a Canadian and an Ontario resident, I am not happy with the way the things are moving in this Province and that’s why I am contesting.

First of all, the Taxes are very high. People are working hard and paying too much taxes, but, they are not getting the services for which they are paying. The Education is very important. Mr. Dalton McQuinty says that he has done a few things in the last 8 years. However, at the end of the day if you really look at it, he has not produced any results. Our children are falling behind. We need to have a strong next generation who can lead this community and this country. So, I am not personally very happy about it.

Also the jobs, many people in this riding are working for the Employment Agencies and not for the companies. As such, they are not really getting good jobs with benefits. At the end of the day they are living from pay cheque to pay cheque. They are not saving enough for the retirement or for their children’s education.

We need to have a competitive economy. Then only we can get ahead. Otherwise, we are going to fall behind and become one of the have not provinces. In fact, it is already a have not province. I do not want our country also to become a have not country. This is the main reason I am running: Taxes, Education and the Jobs.

CD: What made you to choose the Markham - Unionville riding?

S.T: Markham –Unionville riding is a very diverse neighbourhood. Moreover, there are a lot of Tamils, about 8000 Tamil voters living in this riding. That’s one reason. And the other reason is that I have lived and have been working in this riding for the last 20 years. So, we can bring some changes here and pass it on to other areas where our community lives. So, its like a stepping stone for me to get into the politics. And also to help people to get ahead in their life. That’s why I chose this Markham-Unionville riding.

CD: What are the pressing needs of this riding or community and how do you intend to address them?

S.T: One of the major pressing issues in this riding is the traffic. Whoever lives in this riding understands that. Four years ago the Liberal government promised to expand the sub way to Markham area, but they never delivered on that promise. I had the opportunity to talk to many Councillors in Markham. They have a very good plan to bring some relief to this riding.

But, the Provincial government is not helping them. They are not really addressing this issue. People want to build houses, condos and malls. But, the government does not want to spend any money on public transportation and roads. So, we are supporting the Markham regional council plan to ease the traffic problem.

C.D: Out of three major parties why did you choose to run under the Ontario Progressive Conservative banner (PC)?

S.T: As a family man, small business man and a hard working person in Ontario, I can tell that P.C. party is the only party really reflects our values for our Tax dollars and on accountability. It takes care of our Education. That’s why I am running under the PC banner. I have dealt with others in the past in various capacities. But, only the PC party can help us to get ahead in our life and help the community.

C.D: What is your party’s major platform in this election?

S.T: The party has three major ideas. One is giving Tax relief to the hard working families by removing the HST from the Gas and Hydro bills, which in turn will give back money to home owners and hard working families. Other one is to bring down the Income tax by 5 percent for those who are earning under $75,000. Then the Income sharing. If the husband makes more income and wife makes less, we can bring it down to $50,000 to share with the spouse. So, you can pay less taxes. We want to pump more money in to Health Care and Education, investing about 6 billion in to Health Care and also rearranging priorities.

Right now, much money is wasted in bureaucracy wait time and administration. What we are planning to do is to cut the red tapes to put more money into the patient care. So, the patients will be the focus of the health care and not the bureaucracy.

Other thing is Education, that all the kids will be in the full day kindergarten by 2014. In addition, we want to bring the 21st century Education to the elementary schools and classes. Right now, we have an education system that does not help the kids. We will bring a system which can really focus on the kids and allow the teachers to teach. Also, we will introduce again the 3rd fall report card which has been removed by the Liberal Party.

So, we will invest more for our younger generation and seniors. We will introduce 5000 more new long term beds. All these things we will implement.

Other thing is that much money, about one billion, was wasted in the last 8 years by the McQuinty government, specially on e-health. Very recently, he has cancelled a Power Plant in Mississauga that was under construction. Just because he wants to get a few seats he has cancelled this project resulting in about 400 to 500 million dollars being wasted.

Also, there were about 630 agencies that have been created in the last 8 years, like OPA. They are not really providing any services but taking the tax money away to the bureaucrats. So, if the agencies are working, we will keep them, if not we will scrap them. There are many agencies we can cancel and that money will be put back in to the front line services. Those are the 3 pillars in which we are working on.

Also, keeping our neighbourhood safe is a priority. Because, the criminals are enjoying a luxury life. So, we want to stop those criminals, and make them accountable for their actions and give something back to the community.

C.D: Why do you think you are qualified to run in this election, specially against an incumbent who is a Minister and has been there for a while?

S.T: Well, I am well qualified. I have been working with the Canadian Political system for the past 26 years. I understand the system well. I understand the need of the people and I have a vision for the riding and the people who live here.

I started my political life from the trenches, like putting up signs and all and going up to become a candidate. Also, the needs of the people are very important. I have worked in different fields. I started out as a dishwasher, then a factory worker, a courier driver, and even acted in the film of ‘Welcome to Canada.’ I have worked in the IT field, as a soft ware and hard ware net work person. Then I became a Real Estate Agent and working as a small business person. So, I understand each and every ones hardships and struggles in this province. That has given me much experience to understand the people’s need. So, I am well qualified to run in this election.

C.D: What is the ethnic composition of this riding? Why do you think the Tamil Canadians should vote for P.C party and you?

S.T: The ethnic composition of this riding is that about 35 percent are Chinese origin, 20 percent are South Asians, another 20 percent are Caucasians and rest are from other communities.

The Tamil Canadians need a Tamil voice at all levels of government and that is why they need to vote for me. We lack representation at Queens Park right now. This is where matters regarding most of our day to day life such as Health Care, Education, Social Services, and Transportation are discussed. This is very crucial to our community. Also, this will open a lot of other doors to our community and businesses, kids and seniors to get their needs fulfilled. That’s why I am running. The largest Tamil Diaspora lives in Canada. We need to have a stronger voice both politically and economically, so we can make a difference here and around the world.

C.D: Finally what would you like to say to the Tamil voters?

S.T: My victory in this riding depends on the votes of Tamil Canadians. I hear a lot of good things said at the doors from all the communities including the Tamil community.

But, at the end of the day, they have to come out and vote. That’s the most important thing. Not even one vote should be wasted. It’s a neck to neck fight in this riding. We need every vote. We have all the facilities here and if you need any help please call 416 826 7426 to go to the polling station etc. Also, we need volunteers on the e day to bring all the voters out. We can win this riding if all Tamil voters can come out and vote.

C.D: Can you comment on Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s positive remarks on the Human Rights Issue in Sri Lanka?

S.T: In the last few years, we haven’t had the opportunity to work with the Conservative Party. Now, they understand our issues full and well. They are willing to work with us and willing to bring a good resolution to the Tamil issues. If I can win this election we can take this victory a long way.

ஒன்றாரியோ மாகாணசபைத் தேர்தலில் லிபரல் கட்சி வெற்றி பெற்றது.

ஒன்றாரியோ மாகாணத்தில் நேற்று இடம்பெற்ற தேர்தல் வாக்கெடுப்பின் முடிவுகள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன.

107 தொகுதிகளைக் கொண்ட சட்டசபையில், பெரும்பான்மை பெறுவதற்கு 54 தொகுதிகளில் வெற்றி பெறவேண்டிய நிலையில், லிபரல் கட்சி 53 தொகுதிகளில் வெற்றி பெற்றுள்ளது. அது சிறுபான்மை அரசை அமைக்கும். கட்சியின் பல சட்டசபை உறுப்பினர்கள், தேர்தலில் தோல்வியடைந்தார்கள்.

மூன்றாவது தடவையாக லிபரல் கட்சி தேர்தலில் வெற்றி பெற்றுள்ளது. 1977 ஆம் ஆண்டின் பின்னர், மாகாணத்தில் அமையும் லிபரல் கட்சி சிறுபான்மை அரசாக இது அமையும்.

புறோகிறசிவ் கொன்சவேற்றிவ் கட்சி, 37 தொகுதிகளிலும், என்டீபீ, 17 தொகுதிகளிலும் வெற்றி பெற்றன.

சிறுபான்மை அரசு அமைக்கப்பட்டாலும், ஏனைய கட்சிகளுடன் ஒப்பந்தம் எதுவும் செய்யப்படாதெனவும், விடயங்களின் அடிப்படையில் ஏனைய கட்சிகளின் ஆதரவு பெறப்படுமெனவும் லிபரல் கட்சி வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவித்தன.

இந்தத் தேர்தலில் முக்கிய கட்சிகளின் சார்பில் போட்டியிட்ட இரண்டு தமிழர்களும், கணிசமான வாக்குகளைப் பெற்றபோதிலும் இரண்டாம் இடங்களை மட்டும் பெறக்கூடியதாக இருந்தது. மார்க்கம் யூனியன்வில் தொகுதியில் போட்டியிட்ட ஷான் தயாபரன், 11600 வாக்குகளைப் பெற்றார். ஸ்காபறோ ரூஜ் றிவர் தொகுதியில் போட்டியிட்ட நீதன் சன், 13130 வாக்குகளைப் பெற்றார்.
