Anwar al Awlaki, the U.S.-born cleric dubbed “Terrorist Number One” was reportedly killed Friday by an air strike in the mountains of Yemen.

A statement emailed from Yemen’s Washington embassy announced his death under with the subject line: “Breaking News: Awlaki Dead.”

The 40-year-old cleric was killed in the town of Kashef in Yemen’s north Jawf province, about 140 kilometres east of the capital Sanaa, according to the statement.

The news was at first greeted with skepticism as reports of the deaths of members of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) are often false.

But unnamed U.S. government sources also confirmed the death to various American media outlets. A Yemeni security source told the Washington Post that Awlaki (sometimes spelled Aulaqi), was killed by an unmanned American drone.

The Obama administration has increased its use of drone attacks in recent months in both Somalia and Yemen, ignited debate about their use.

The Yemen-based AQAP was formed when Saudi and Yemen branches merged in January 2009 and there has been fear that the group will gain strength amid the country's instability. Earlier this month in his first interview as CIA director, retired Gen. David Petraeus called AQAP “the most dangerous regional node in the global jihad.”

While Awlaki has been highlighted in the U.S. and media as one of the group's most dangerous leaders, some analysts have been skeptical of his operational importance.

Awlaki allegedly had ties to various high-profile plots against the U.S., including the failed 2009 Christmas Day bombing attempt of a Detroit-bound flight. In New York, the Pakistani-American man who pleaded guilty to the May 2010 Times Square car bombing attempt told interrogators he was “inspired” by al-Awlaki after making contact over the Internet.

Al-Awlaki also exchanged up to 20 emails with U.S. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, alleged killer of 13 people in the Nov. 5, 2009, rampage at Fort Hood. Hasan initiated the contacts, drawn by al-Awlaki’s Internet sermons, and approached him for religious advice.

Al-Awlaki has said he didn’t tell Hasan to carry out the shootings, but he later praised Hasan as a “hero” on his website for killing American soldiers who would be heading for Afghanistan or Iraq to fight Muslims.

Awlaki’s online seminars inspired others, including members of the so-called Toronto 18.

“Don’t consult with anybody in killing the Americans,” Awlaki said in a video last year. “Fighting the devil does not require a fatwa, nor consultation, nor prayers seeking divine guidance. They are the party of Satan and fighting them is the obligation of the time.”

U.S. Representative Jane Harman dubbed him “Terrorist Number One,” and he became the first American to be included on the CIA hit list after U.S. President Barack Obama sanctioned his assassination last year.

In an exclusive interview with the Toronto Star earlier this year in Sanaa, Awlaki’s father said he struggled to understand his son’s status.

Nasser al Awlaki, was Yemen’s former agricultural minister, Fulbright scholar and has closed ties to embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh and many members of the his regime.

“Anwar is my son and I have to do anything legal to protect him from targeted killing of the United States,” he told the Star. “But I never had any contact or thoughts of helping him. He has to take responsibility for himself and that’s all.”

Nasser al Awlaki lives in Sanaa with Awlaki’s wife and their children. He could not be reached for comment early Friday.

யேமன் நாட்டின் கிழக்குப் பகுதியில் இருந்து அவர் செயற்பட்டு வந்தார். சவுதி அரேபியாவிலும், யேமனிலும் உள்ள அல் கைடா அமைப்பினரை ஒன்றிணைக்கும் பணியில் அவர் வெற்றி பெற்றார்.

சிறப்பாகக் குறிப்பிடப்படும் அனைத்துலக பயங்கரவாதியென அமெரிக்க அரசு அவரை அறிவித்தது. அல் அவ்லாகியைக் கொல்லுமாறு அமெரிக்க ஜனாதிபதி பறாக் ஒபாமா உத்தரவிட்டிருந்தாரெனவும் அறிவிக்கப்படுகிறது.
